Sorry if this has been done before. I found a thread for the horses readers coveted and then read Claire's review of Pony surprise (which I haven't read but now want to) and it's equine hero and wondered which were the least attractive pony characters. I feel a bit mean doing this since I never was able to have a pony of my own and anything would have done as long as it had four hooves and a tail but while many pony book ponies are almost too perfect some might even have made me pass them up.

Ooh I won’t be hefting half a brick in your direction. I think Arabs are gorgeous to look at but From what I recall she didn’t do a lot for improving the chestnut mare stereotype.
However my currant choice is the dreadful Oscar from Radney Riding Club, Who didn’t have any redeeming qualities. I mean pony books have plenty of almost too perfect ponies like Adonis who win the showing and jumping, and then more realistic plain but effective horses like Mulligatawny but Oscar is horrible.

Haffy - you're a disgrace!! Just don't let Kunuma spot your post haha.
Yeah, Oscar for me too. Fireworks in Pony Club Team was a bit of a b*gger. What was the evil little show pony in Caroline Akrill's Showing series called? It was a real devil - defintely on the list (if I could remember his name!)

Well luckily kunuma can't log in because Firefox is taking a long lie down in a darkened room and apparently on this browser thingy she doesn't exist for proboards. She would of course say Shantih would be her choice for favourite horse although possibly tied with Siani! She loved Cascade but he was a bit on the quiet side really. In real life she had a chestnut Arab mare who was the quietest horse ever, (backed and hacking out within a week) the most lunatic she ever met was a chestnut TB mare! (Shantih would have been a much better horse of course had her owner been able to ride properly!! lol) Least favourite would be the star of the current new book she's reading now, for some reason the dream horse of the heroine is a Percheron!

A lady on one of my face ache groups has a gorgeous Percheron mare whose dapples look like stars like something out of a fairytale. She may not be the most nimble but have seen lovely videos of her hacking and under harness.

Ah Yes that was his name, evil little sod but strangely likeable. I must admit to a sneaking affection for the naughty ponies too. I always seem to end up with the naughty or weird ones! I hardly ever go riding now but the last time I did I got a bit of an odd ball who hated cantering, just trotted faster and faster til my bones were shaking and my teeth felt like they were gonna drop out. Luckily due to dodgy knees I usually sit at the trot nowadays as there was no way you could rise at that speed! BTW Kunuma what's wrong with Percherons? I really like heavy horses.

Not much I'm liking about Misty in the Kate Lattey Pony Jumpers books. Biting and kicking on top of being stupidly hot and reactive under saddle.

BTW Kunuma what's wrong with Percherons? I really like heavy horses. I like Heavy Horses too, but just not to ride!! Because so many people are erm heavier nowadays I know they are becoming very fashionable to ride, along with those huge hairy cobs - but I like little horses being only little myself! I had one job exercising Welsh cobs (Section D) - fantastic looking beasts and a really hot exciting ride - but oh goodness, their trot, like Claire said, it shook all your teeth out and I was exhausted working them! They wanted me to do long distance rides with them -eeeeek, I would never have survived! re the Percheron in the current book, just not exactly the best choice for a gymkhana pony for a child!! I belong to the " why don't children ride native ponies any more club"

Have you tried the new one - Quantum is it called - i like it and it's pretty quick! My computer did it's usual and I suddenly acquired something called Edge, which drove me mad and something called Chrome which is what I'm on now, I hadn't heard of Quantum and will have to look it up! Like the name! I stuck with Firefox because I don't like changes, but recently it has updated itself into something that hardly works - hence me defaulting to this Chrome thingy!

Firefox has been playing up with me lately and I keep ignoring the updates, so it seems to be having hissy fits whether you update or not.
Opera is quite a good browser. I use 4 different ones on laptop and 2 on phone, in the hope that at least one will work all of the time. Edge is the worst one of the lot.

Yeah me too, same in books: the kids in pony books used to ride Dartmoors, Exmoors, Welshies and the like, now they have TBs and warmbloods! One of the reasons I like Amanda Wills 'modern' pony books is that she has a Connie, Dartmoors and rescue ponies.

I grew up in the New Forest and unsurprisingly most people rode New Forest ponies, sure footed and sensible and available in sizes to suit most. Of course we did most of our riding on the open forest which is why I am always surprised to hear people who ride who don’t jump at all. I mean I didn’t do much show jumping but we wouldn’t have got far easily without being ready to pop over fallen logs and branches or little streams

One modern pb I had for Christmas was about a Connemara as the star - but it was based in Ireland. That was probably the best one of the modern ones I've read recently.
However the next one had me laughing out loud, as the 13 year old was saving up for a pony, and had saved £900 as that was what she needed for a pony!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK so how on earth does a 13year old get hold of £900 - and has she ever heard of cheap ponies!! Sadly nowadays a pony is considerably cheaper than a puppy! Down here the most gorgeous natives go for less than the cost of a guinea pig!
Ginslinger I had a registered NF mare from the Balmer Lawn stud many years ago and I put her to an Arab stallion, the progeny of the resulting filly went eventing!!

Can well believe it. There is a pure bred NF eventing successfully in the states. My gran lived across the road from Balmer Lawn when I was little. Where I rode there was a just under 12.2 mare who won the 14.2 jumping with 16 year old owner, What she could have done if she had been a 14hander. Another Stroller maybe
As Peter McNair said about another expensive pony “but with all its own teeth and a full set of shoes mind you”.. Mind you in H&H you see some very ordinary looking ponies going for quite substantial sums. But I know people who have got super ponies straight off mountain or forest for songs.. but you have to know what you are doing.

Up here horse prices are quite high as we don't have all the natives and horse sales you do down there. I can actually imagine a kid saving up £900. They seem to get loads of pocket money and other cash nowadays. My 13 year old niece got around £150 in money for Christmas as well as presents. Is the Connie one the one I gave you - A Pony for Free. I've just put that in my kindle unlimited library so now I'm quite looking forward to reading it.

Yes, A Pony for Free - it is a big improvement on most of the modern ones - thank you! Crumbs, I'm so out of touch - £150 for Christmas! Will her parents adopt me please?? Not only are they rich, but they seem so young in behaviour - in the £900 book you are reading it from the point of view of the child - she comes across as about nine years old - at the end she is apparently 16!! Last time I watched a sale ring, (not something I do very often as way too depressing - if you don't have a home for it, then DON'T breed it) I saw three young TB crosses offered for peanuts - (I think it was about £20 each)

Which is the Percheron one, I'm reading a book with a Percheron in it - The Thirteenth Horse - is that the one or a different one?
£20 fir TB crosses?!! We need to start a dealers yard up here, buy the horses down there and sell them for a huge proft!

Talking of cheap ponies, I was very sad today to see a newborn foal up on the moors, in terrible weather. A little palomino Shetland it could barely walk, hard to tell whether that was because it was one of these so called miniature Shetlands who of course have leg problems anyway, or if it was from the exposure. It was soaked to the skin and literally staggering across the road - how I wish all those tourists who coo and aaaah over the ponies in the summer could see what they go through in their lives. If I had a big enough garden, I'd track down the 'farmer' who owns it and buy it off him, just so I don't have to watch it die.

It's heartbreaking Kunuma, there should be more done to highlight the problem, most tourists are totally ignorant of what goes on.
