Hi guys just wondering if anyone has read his books. What do you think of him and join up? Has anyone tried it?! I am very interested in it but some people call him a big fake. Any comments/views?

I saw him the first time he came over here, and if I am judging someone's skill, or lack of it, with horses or dogs, I just look at the animal they are with, they tell me straight away. I was prepared to find yet another charlatan, but within minutes you could see he was the real deal. I have seen him every year since, and he blows me away every time. NOT the case with others I know are popular!! In an age where every who wants to use animals to get their five minutes of fame appears on TV with monotonous regularity - I have only ever seen three people who REALLY KNOW the species they work with. ~Monty Roberts, Cesar Milan, and the late great Steve Irwin. I've spent my entire life surrounded by animals - and they are much better judges of the human race than me!

I saw him once at the National Stud open weekend - I was impressed - not sure if I could successfully use his methods though (I wish).

He has done some great work and has opened a lot of peoples eyes to a different way of doing things but I am not sure about all his methods and certainly not in wrong hands. Join up could for example be very damaging. I am also very anti one of his 'students' Richard Maxwell - I was disgusted by him and his handling of horses at a demonstation.
The horseman I admire most is Mark Rashid.

I think this is the biggest problem, with handling of animals whether training or not, the handler's timing is the most important thing. Otherwise the animal can perceive a correction as a reinforcement or just be totally confused and hence too stressed to learn anything. I therefore agree with Haffyfan, that many of these methods work because the originator knows what they are doing and are not easily copied and not able to be copied at all by some owners! I have certainly never been remotely impressed by any Monty Roberts would be's!! It's better than the old ways of brute force and ignorance - but not to be seen as a short cut to really understanding your animal. It is just great that perhaps a few people were inspired to look at things from the horse's point of view. I have never seen Mark Rashid - does he do demonstrations in this country?

Thanks for the replies. I have never met him or seen a 'live' demo but have enjoyed his books and seen him on TV and thought he seemed a very genuine person. And his methods are fascinating. (as is his life!) But I think you could be right haffyfan & kunuma that an untrained person trying them could come to grief.
BTW kunuma yes i also used to love watching Steve Irwin, what a tragedy it was losing him.

Claire -if you can, get the video of him and Shy Boy - the mustang he took from the wild. That in itself is amazing to watch, but pales into insignificance beside watching him release him back to his herd, and wait overnight, until he came back to him, at a gallop, of his own free will. Talk about a true bond!
