Thanks for the link for 'Who Sir, Me Sir' - I really liked the humour in that book. Will watch those episodes :-)

There is an article in this week's Horse and Hound about BOGOF foals that reminded me of "Who sir? Me sir?".

Ok I am taking pms from those of you who are wanting a rosette. Please pm me by the 24TH SEPTEMBER MIDNIGHT UK TIME - any later and there will be a delay in sending out.
Please include the following:
Full name Full address including country.
If I have received your pm I will reply. However I am on holiday 17th to the 22nd September so I might not be able to reply if you pm me on those dates.
Like I have previously said if anyone is under the age of 16 please ask permission from your parent or guardian that it's ok to give out your address BEFORE PMing me. I don't think Claire or myself want pms from irate parents.

Thanks again on behalf of the forumites for arranging the rosettes Garej. None of the people taking part in the challenge are under 16 so there should be no problem with that.
Well done to Brumby for finishing the challenge. If any of the other folk who have finished have nominations for their star reads let me know. I'm updating the web page today but I'm actually having 2 days off work so should have time to do another update over the weekend !

No problem Claire. If for some reason anyone doesn't feel comfortable giving out their address or for whatever reason doesn't want a rosette then that's fine with me. It's not compulsory. I will just keep any spares for myself.

Thanks Garej will pm you my address, Claire my star read would be Shy Boy, Monty Roberts - or if it had to be a new. fiction read it would be In Times Like These, Nathan van Coops. Black Stallion film gets a neutral because the horse gets a smiley but the actors got a frowney! Black Stallion book gets a frowney, I didn't have to beat up my stallion to break him in and he was an Arab!

The star read can be any book whether fic or non-fic, whether you've read it before or not.
Although I find it quite hard to get into non-fiction, I also really enjoyed Shy Boy when I read it a few years back. I got the DVD too - have you seen that Kunuma?

I haven't got any pm from you kunuma.
My star read has to The Silver Eagle Riding School. Great riding school story. I would choose A Stable For Jill but I have read it before, albeit edited, so it was great to enjoy something that I hadn't read before. Besides Jill usually comes top in most lists so it's great to have something different for a change.

I saw the documentary on TV - one of the most amazing things ever when Shy Boy returns from running with the wild herd and gallops back to Monty completely of his own volition! Awesome....... as the Americans would say! Garej I've tried to send you the message again - hopefully it worked this time.

I'm having a terrible time picking my star read! Leaving out Odds Against, because it is a re-read for me and I always feel like the Summer Challenge is at it's best when it pushes me to discover new books/authors, I still can't pick between Taking Flight and A Different Kind of Cowboy....and shockingly, A Girl and Five Brave Horses, which I didn't think I'd enjoy reading at all, isn't far behind that pair. Can you have two star reads in one summer, Claire?

NEUTRAL face for RUNAWAY DREAMS by Sharon SIAMON, please.
Still a fun summer type read ( despite being set in winter ) but a bit too silly in places, and with an unclear premise involving a missing deed being treated as simply lost proof of ownership, without acknowledging that its original loss in a bet (before it was physically lost/ misplaced) probably also transferred ownership of the property. A bit of a filler book in the series.

I have now read The Black Stallion for the first time in err decades. Can I have a conflicted thingummy for this please? I did remember bits of it and as an adventure book it is ok but as a horselover I found it a bit upsetting. I am sure Major Holbrooke wouldn't approve of the breaking methods and the race just seemed an abuse of the remarkable trust the horse had in the boy. I don't suppose I noticed as a child but I suppose with age I am more aware of how alien it would be for the horse - like the little girl who wrote to the Queen wanting to borrow a swan and keep it in the bath.
Anyway I am not as far behind as it seems. All are started though the Maxwell has disintegrated. I am in the process of buying a home. Which has demanded a lot of my attention. Since I may be in stop gap accommodation, would Garej mind hanging onto a rosette if I deserve one til I am settled?

I have now completed the challenge.
THE HERMITS HORSE and THE LAST BARONET both get SMILEYS from me. I was rather regretting picking The Last Baronet after some of the other reviews on here, but I enjoyed it. The book is jam packed with eccentric characters as is common in Akrill's book, and whilst rather far fetched, I found it an entertaining read.
In contrast, I gave up with THE RACING GAME after 50 minutes. The story line was simplified beyond belief. It is a FROWN face from me.
Finally, after some deliberation, I'm going to give my STAR BOOK to Gerald Durrell's MY FAMILY AND OTHER ANIMALS.
Garej - The rosettes are a lovely idea - thank you. I will pm you my address shortly.

No problem ginslinger if you want to wait until you have settled. Just let me know when you have sent the pm as I don't check the pm box very often unless I am expecting one. I may be a little slow at posting however as I don't possess a post office in my village so I have to go to town (there is another in the next village but due to personal reasons I don't like going there due to the fact that it's located inside a bargain booze). So as long as you're happy with that I am happy to wait.
Ps you deserve one!

Bless you for that. There will be no hurry and will be something to look forward to. I am not sure my few rosettes survived clearing out my childhood home so it will be lovely to have a new one. Or I could send a SAE and save you a bit of trouble.

Well done for finishing Lousie I'm glad I'm not the only one who found The Racing Game hard going. Susan - yeah I think we can let you have two star reads - great that you found two books of such excellence! Ginslinger - good luck with the new home! I'll award smilies to my own last 2 reads, Penny & Pegasus, which was a re-read. Also Last Watch by Stephen King which was by far the best one in the trilogy, perhaps because he moved away from straight crime, which was not his forte - back to a bit of paranormal mystery. Hoping I may finish this year, though am ridiculously busy with work and house renovation and am finding it hard to make time for reading. Starting on Horse of Air next. Will update everyone's smilies, etc, tomorrow.

Please can i have smileys for Half a Fault and Jockey GirlHalf a fault, is another of those books written by a child, that seemed to be published in abundance during this era. It it wasn't for the vintage charm it would probably nowadays come across as less than modest as it's basically an account of how much Audrey and sister won that year! And for extra kudos even sees her photographed getting a prize awarded by the Queen! Loads of lovely photos of the sisters competing and riding at home. Of course all the ponies, except the unfortunately named black pony who was her sisters pride and joy regardless, won everything in sight just about and even the 12.2 happily popped 4ft 6 all day long Lots of shameless name dropping too but she donated all the proceeds to charity and it really is quite charming. Interestingly it mentions a very nice pony and it's very good rider - Legend and Elizabeth Spencer, whose own story had wait a fair while longer to get into print, having recently been published by Forelock. www.forelock-books.co.uk/product/legend-a-true-story-by-elizabeth-spencer/Jockey Girl, i really enjoyed, lots of sterotypes, (you will loose count), also very predictable but well written and not exactly the story you first expect in terms of the missing parent element. No 'kooky' addition to this one either, might help with those not keen on her stuff although personally i have liked everything to date.

lol, haffy, great review -- love your comment about the ponies -- where are all these small ponies that happily jump 4'6" ? Funny but I never run into those, but you read about them all the time ! PS I was trying to find out more about Audrey Taylor -- there is an Audrey Taylor Gonzalez who might be our woman who has had a lifetime of adventures (including having a stud farm in Uruguay) and writes in a way that on the surface seems deprecatory but is actually very self aggrandizing Haffy or anyone know anything more about the Half a Fault author?

Rally i think The Father became Baron Taylor of Hadfield, which means she is probably Hon. Audrey Evelyn Taylor, listed as his daughter from first marriage as ages/dates would be about correct. Looks like she died earlier this year.
