Hi folks as some of us are a little behind this year I'll extend the start date to Sunday (12th) if you can have your lists in by then it would be great, but if you need a little more time don't worry as I can just add you on to the Reading Challenge webpage later. I havent even got mine sorted yet and I'm organising the blooming thing! In fact I may not even be able to get the webpage done by then unless I can get my laptop fixed as the web software is on that one. So in a nutshell no worries just send in lists when you can.

I would say Flambards is horsey so it wouldn't count however if you went for The Edge of the Cloud then you would be okay.
I have almost decided which books to go for. I can't copy and paste because I am on my phone. I have decided to go for A Place with Two Faces by JPT. I am still struggling with which Dream Pony though but I am leaning towards the Elinore Havers one.
I am desperate to get going as I was looking forward to starting tomorrow as that was the original start date. I have decided which book I am going to tackle first.

phew. Horse Whispers and Lies by MRs relatives will also be a nogo? The Edge of the Cloud bored me as the whole Flambards books. Rivals by Jilly Cooper? Easy way out: Mit 13 hat man täglich Ärger. By Tina Caspari, author of Bille and Zottel.

No probs if anyone wants to start on the original date. I am behind as having loads of problems with EVERYTHING at the moment and laptop packed up 2 days ago too so I am having to use netbook. But enough of my problems. I havent read the other Dream Pony garej but the Elinore Havers one is a good traditional read. Also we did it as a reading circle book 2 or 3 years ago so you could have a look at that thread when you'd finished it and also vote on it there. I'll find the link if you decide to go for that one.

Actually thinking of things I am probably not going to start until Saturday because I am going on the Coronation Street tour on Friday. I will be going to bed early on Thursday night so I won't have time then. I will be back late on Friday so I won't be able to do it then.

Thanks for everyone's lists so far.
Well done garej on finding the Dream Pony link saves me lookin for it and thanks for bumping it.
Rosie I love The Team From Low Moor too, possibly my fav GB book. I would have picked it for the Gillian Baxter reading circle if it wasn't so hard to find and I didnt have a scan of it like Sweet Rock.

Looked at my list to see how I was getting on and just noticed this must be my American summer, 5 out of 10 by US authors and one of the others about Americans visiting UK!
Finished "Stablemates" which is a lovely story and a lovely book. Nice illustrations and greatly pleased the sentimental side of my nature, Big smiley face there. "Riders from Afar" - very well written also rates a smiley face. Started the Mario Puzo one - interesting take on life.

Finished Summer at Horseshoe Ranch by Eleanor Hoffmann....it's a bit malt-shop-ish as horse books go, but still includes a good solid horse story (plucky, hardworking girl running a horse breeding/training ranch triumphs), so a smiley here. Big smiley, really, as it's been lurking in my tbr pile for years now!

Sorry I have not been able to set up the Reading Challenge website yet due to computer probs and having to re-install some software first. I'll get it up and running as soon as poss so the smilies and frownies will hopefully soon make an appearance lol.

LOL...here we are again....every year the challenge pops up odd cultural references, doesn't it? (Part of what makes it so fun, really!). A Malt Shop is (or was, I've never seen a proper one) a sort of soda fountain/ice cream parlor. In popular culture, it was a place teenagers hung out and a place you'd go on that big first date, hoping to get your dates class ring, or if he was a college man, his fraternity pin, the badge of "Going Steady". The hayday was probably the post WW11 years....late forties through the fifties. Not surprisingly, books called Malt Shop Books are generally teen romances...circa 1950.....a kiss is as risqué as it could possibly get. There isn't a whole lot of crossover with horse books, but the occasional one does pop up. Image Cascade Publishing is a reprint company in the US (like Girls Gone Bye), that has brought a number of them back into print...here's a prime example: www.imagecascade.com/class-ring-by-rosamond-du-jardin.htmlAnd a copy of the same book on ebay.....you can see the cover art a bit better here...look, there is a Class Ring and a Malted! www.ebay.com/itm/Rosamond-du-Jardin-Class-Ring-1951-4th-impression-hardback-book-w-dustjacket-/351101137055?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item51bf42309f

Thanks for that, I did enjoy it and would recommend it for anyone who is a fan of Corrie. I have noticed that one of my books is from the year I was born, not deliberate but been as some people were going for that I thought that I would point it out.

Some of them I can work out and I have heard them mentioned in films but I'm still not really sure exactly what they are! Soda Fountain ( a fountain in the middle of the square running on soda water???) ice cream parlour ( like we have vans? ) fraternity pin class ring? but most of all I'm stuck still on what a malted is - from the pic on the book it's a drink - are we talking ovaltine here? LOL Talk about two nations divided etc etc!! Fascinating! PS Am halfway through Renni the Rescuer - I speed read it the first time as I was afraid there might be a Bambi's mother moment - so I'm reading it properly this time, it's a really lovely book!

Hi folk, finally got everything re-installed and set up the challenge web page. Darkhorse I need your selection, Haffy need you to confirm your Elyne Mitchell book and also your other 2 titles. Cloud what is the name and author of the Arthur Ransome biog? Dasko - not sure if you're still around but if so and you still want to join in need the full list. No desperate rush for them tho! (PS havent added any smilies yet will do as soon as we get a few more books read) Can everyone check what I've done so far in case I have missed anything out/got anything wrong. Link to the web page is below: Summer Reading Challenge webpageAs you can see I have also added how many books each person aims to do (yep I have wimped out of the full 10!). If you complete your own personal challenge you will 'win' the golden trophy.

Yes marm I may be able to squeeze another one in but not sure what yet I've just finished Joe and the Lightning Pony. Very interesting to read this after Team from Low Moor as they have similar themes with Pony Club Games etc. old and modern take on it. I'll give it a smiley too please Claire. I preferred TfLM as I like older pony books rather than modern, but Victoria Eveleighs books are based more on traditional pony books anyway so I enjoyed it.
