Lol you two yeah think we'll give the birth year one a miss! Great if you can join in rosie - 3 or 4 books is fine. It may be better for folk to choose less books if they feel they may not do the full 10 then you'll have more chance of completing challenge. I think I'll just do about 7 this time and maybe I will finish for once!

A re-read category would be good as that's what I seem to be doing now. I don't have a TBR pile sadly. Neither do I, a new book doesn't last me more than a day after getting it at best! I'll take part please if I can do rereads or scrounge books! Yes, I did kind of cheat last time as I was doing a lit course at the same time!!

Maybe 2014 could be the year of the Mini, Medi, Maxi Challenge? Mini challenge say 3/4 books, Medi 5/7, Maxi 8/10? Still all on the same challenge page, just as in past, but either in mini/medi/maxi sections or just with the designation next to the name...i.e. Rosie (mini challenge), Claire (medi challenge), etc. You could even do the Big Kahuna, One Monster Book Challenge...the one book that you really WANT to check off your list, but which has defeated you time after time! (Don't we all have at least one of those )

Mine would be Florian by Felix Salten....I'd have a better chance of completing a Maxi 10 book challenge than that one! Still, you never know, others may be masochistic courageous

Some great ideas for categories. I especially like the non-pony book by a pony author. I'd like to read Pat Leitch's Treaure to the East but really cant afford to buy any more books at the mo, so if anyone has a copy they could lend to me it would be fantastic. Keep your ideas for new categories coming in. You can borrow mine wit pleasure Claire x

Really surprised at someone not liking "Florian"
My maxi challenge is "Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour". The summer reading challenge finally made me read "Miss Badsworth MFH" and sent her off to the British Heart Foundation shop...

I can't really claim to NOT like Florian, tintin....I haven't really read any of it...for some reason, I just keep picking it up and putting it down, never quite in the mood. Someday! (Which will not be this summer )

Mine would be Florian by Felix Salten....I'd have a better chance of completing a Maxi 10 book challenge than that one! Still, you never know, others may be masochistic courageous Is that the chap who wrote Bambi?? Yes, I belong to the group who cried when watching Bambi - and nearly never watched another film ever after watching Old Yeller as a child. After watching that, exploding heads on Game of Thrones was a mere chuckle!!

Yes, that's the author! I sobbed through Bambi (movie) and loved the original book. On the other hand, I read his Hound of Florence (Disney's live action Shaggy Dog was very, very loosely based on this adult novel) and it was beyond boring. A sleeping pill in book form.
Now that I think of it, Hound of Florence is probably what is keeping me from picking up Florian. Maybe I should re-read Bambi......

Disney films should have a public health warning. Not only do I cry at Bambi and also the bit in Dumbo where he's separated from his mother, I positively howl every time I watch the part on The Fox and the Hound where the little old lady leaves the fox behind. I can feel myself welling up now just thinking about it! I've read the Bambi books which were quite good but not Florian.
Erm Rosie thanks for your kind offer of Tan and Tarmac but I will have to politely decline. (I have a feeling tho your copy may come with u when you visit Yorkshire lol)

Time flies! Saturday is the summer solstice and the beginning of summer! Are we using it, or July 1 as a start date? Either way, do we have an official ruling on format (categories etc.)? Gotta whittle down the list! (And it sounds like others might be borrowing/getting from library, so that might take time. Or not, U.S. mail is arthritic snail pace, yours might be greased lightning )

I'll try and put up the categories before then tho to give a bit extra time to get hold of books. Our mail is fairly fast tho sometimes things dont turn up!

I recently received a parcel from the USA which I thought had gotten lost due to the time it took. It was actually held up by customs, as it was subject to a customs charge. Once I paid the fee, it came rather quicker than expected!

I'm stunned! Must be light volume in the summer for a package to move quicker than expected, I'm afraid it's usually the reverse....hope it's a good book!

I'm stunned! Must be light volume in the summer for a package to move quicker than expected, I'm afraid it's usually the reverse....hope it's a good book! It was being held in the next county in Parcelforce's depot rather than being held overseas. They sent it within 48 hours of recieving the cheque and didnt bother waiting for it to clear, which is why I had a surprise (there was no reason why it shouldnt clear, there is more than sufficient funds in my bank account). Sadly it wasnt a book, but a Breyer horse. Sadly it's been retired so I couldnt exactly wait for another to come in this country. It's all Tinkerbell's (Sophie) fault - she climbed on the bookcase and the original one fell off and broke. Oh I was so annoyed when I found out that I announced on facebook that I wanted to rehome the mischievous girl. It's been kept in the box until Tinkerbell grows out of climbing the bookcase.

Hi all just to let you know that the Summer reading challenge will start a little later than planned on 10th July due to the fact I am a bit behind with things. I will put up a dedicated thread with list of categories in the next 2 or 3 days that will give you all at least 2 weeks to choose your books and start acquiring them if needs be.

Just to add re: Salten, the book Bambi is so amazing -- philosophical, existential, poignant, poetic. Of Salten's work, I think I have only read Bambi and Bambi's children, the latter of which was a bit lighter in tone and happier in events overall. I wonder if the snoozefest titles like Hound of Florence might simply be poorly translated? The controversial (accused Communist and alleged spy) Whittaker Chambers did an amazing job with the original.

That's a good point, rally....a bad translation can totally ruin a book. I'm not sure who the translator was for the edition I read though, I got it via inter-library loan (it's really rare....or was before the ebook came out!). Bambi and Bambi's Children are the only other books of his I've read.....one of these days I'll get to Florian, and I do keep meaning to check out Renni, which is about a German Shepard.
Back on challenge topic, I've got a tentative list in mind, just need to figure out what will slot in where for categories!

If you get to read it, I'd love to know what you think of Renni....it's one of those books that went from hard to find and expensive to available as an ebook for $5, but having been a bit burned by Hound of Florence, I've been hesitating.
