OK so I have a region one DVD (all the good animal films seem to be American and Region One!) can't watch it on my DVD player (mind you it won't play any recent DVD's, not sure why!) and can't on my laptop as it says I can only change the region once and with my luck I wouldn't be able to change it back! Any way I can watch it??

Never had that one before and loads of my dvd's are region 1. Most modern players will play any region, so i'm told, but i've only tried region 1's. We've only had one that wouldn't play them or copies for that matter...it was a more expensive brand. They play no fuss in pc/lap top too so sorry thats really unhelpful of me.
What are you trying watch?

Yes whats the film, one of us might have it and be able to lend it to you. Or you could try installing VLC media player and open the disc in that rather than whatever you normally use (windows media player I assume?) I use VLC to play my DVDs on the laptop and I don't have a problem with playing different regions. Here's a link to where you can download VLC. Its much better than windows media player anyhow and plays a lot more formats: download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html

I recently bought a new (well to me, it was secondhand) DVD player and I had to hack it. Basically I shoved the manufacturer's name, model number followed by region free hack into google (mine was Pacific 1002 MK2) and I found the answer. Be aware that it will invalidate the warranty, but been as mine came off ebay and second hand and I only paid a fiver I decided it was worth the risk (and plus it was exactly the same model number as what I replaced it with so I knew it was hackable as I had done the previous one).

Thanks for all the advice - it's all the doggy childrens/disney type stories that seem to be Region one. I've only got a portable TV with an inbuilt DVD player, and it plays very few of the recent ones I got anyway - so is probably not a very good one. For some reason I did expect the laptop to be able to though! Just about to start an online course on the discovery of the Higgs Boson now so that will give me something to watch!!

Well I would try the VLC player, thats prob your best bet. Dont think you can hack into the TV DVD combos - let us know how you get on.
