As the title suggests, I went for a ride this morning at a place over near where I work. I was given a nice big dark bay gelding to ride, called Sergeant, and he seemed quite nice, if a little over-eager to eat everything in sight!
We went out a nice, quiet walk and trot ride, and everything went smoothly until we were trotting up the last bit of track before we came into the farmyard.
Then he buggered off.
Not sure what happened exactly, but Sarge suddenly shot off with me, past the other horse (Rocky) and before I knew it I was on the deck in the long grass, with Sarge a ever-shrinking brown blob in the distance!
Nothing seriously damaged, just bumps and bruises more than anything else, really.
Bloody horses!!

Oh dear I hope my above quote from another thread wasn't an omen!
I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself seriously.

I think I was tempting fate a bit - we were talking the whole way round about the Hunter and Lass week, and of course we all know what happened there...!! That, and it's nearly 6 months to the day that I fell off last time. 6 months on my birthday, to be exact!

At least you did not fall off while the horse was standing still; this happened to me several years ago now and the children still talk about it. They think it took real skill to do that!

HA! That's nowt Vera! Last year I went to catch my horse in the paddock where they live in Summer, sometimes a kilometre from the yards, so I took my bridle hoping to find some way of mounting. I ran into another woman who was quite reserved, into dressage and 'looking right' but pretty useless and over horsed. So I find a tiny rock and park Star downhill from it and try to mount from there: I KNEW the rock was too small, and I KNEW Star was too far away but I wanted to ride back. So I launched- and Star just lifted his head up and I fell UNDER his neck. So I'm sprawled on the ground, head facing down hill, legs almost going over my head about 3 metres away from where I started, and Star's looking at me like "What did you do that for idiot?" and posh woman was speechless.
SO I tried again, got on and then tried to chat to dressage novice with no success. She couldn't get her horse to LEAD to the yards because there was a small tractor in the next paddock ages away and she said 'Oh he's young, he's scared' etc etc but he was an ex racehorse- he'd seen machinery before, he was just pissing about. Then STAR thought he'd try it on too, as horses do, so I growled, kicked and borrowed her crop and belted him to the gate and of course her horse followed.
Next day she left- and went to the worst stable in Canberra (where I turned down a job they were so crap) where no doubt her horse is confined to a stable 23 hours a day!

Just need to keep at the exercises etc to get it working properly. If I'd managed it, I would have made the horse himself into a pot of glue!!

There were other suggestions as to what to do with the horse - some even suggested by the staff as the horse stood there looking very sorry for himself!

I have the opposite problem. I have trouble getting off! Last time I went riding I made a fool of myself as I couldn't get my leg far enough over the cantle trying to dismount and got stuck there! Looked a right twerp. Ah the joys of becoming a decreipt old fart!
