Hi all, well summer now seems to be over and its almost time for the annual Pony Book Mastermind comp! For the forum newbies, this is a competition which is similar to the original Mastermind in which competitors have a general knowledge round, followed by a specialist subject of their choosing. This can be anything pony book related, such as an author, series or a particular book. It could even be something like a particular breed in pony books or a certain sub-genre of pony books. There's no prize except for the coveted Pony Book Mastermind title which you can proudly display by your name and avatar!
Can we please have a show of hands of who would like to take part, and can you all try and choose your specialist subject in the next couple of weeks.
Any questions, please post here.

similar to the original Mastermind Having never seen the original Mastermind (or the new(?) Mastermind for that matter), that doesn't mean much competitors have a general knowledge round, followed by a specialist subject of their choosing So we choose any subject we feel like and you create questions for that subject? That seems like quite a bit of work for you!

So we choose any subject we feel like and you create questions for that subject? That seems like quite a bit of work for you! Erm yes it is - but I've got nowt better to do with my time I often get some help by one or two people in setting the questions if I find myself swamped. As I've been doing this for a while I always assumed the Americans and Aussies had heard of Mastermind. Here's a link to the Wikipedia page for Mastermind for anyone who has not: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastermind_%28TV_series%29Actually from a quick perusal of Wikipedia I notice it was in fact aired on the Discovery channel for a year! There's also a clip on youtube of the hilarious Two Ronnies Mastermind sketch which I am sure I have posted in a previous mastermind thread too.

Indeed, I have never seen the actual Mastermind but always figured it was a quiz show and wasn't too fussed about the specifics.
Incredibly busy this year, plus I'm totally outclassed here. Will watch for the new forum Mastermind with interest!

I never do that brilliantly at this Rally I'm struggling to think what to do as my specialist subject this year. I can't even remember what I did last year!

Sadly, going to have to pass this year...October is shaping up to be hectic!
Can probably pitch in with questions though, if you need to cover books/authors you haven't got access to!

Blub susan it won't be the same without you - would it help if I said I was doing less questions this year (not a bribe I really am doing less as I am also a bit busy at the mo! I thought I'd do about 10 of each)
Trixie - yes no probs have got all the Silver Brumbies. Do you want to do all 4 or just one of them? Silver Brumby Kingdom has always been one of my all time favs!

Is it alright if I cheat a bit and do The Hermit's Horse? I feel like I know this one really well after just reading it.

Thats fine darkhorse. Makes it easier for me too as I have just read it also. We don't have many entrants yet this year, hopefully we'll get a few more in the next few days. Come on folks how can you pass up the chance of winning this prestigious title to put beneath your avatar!

Sigh....I feel so guilty (and a little left out ;-) )
So...when is all this taking place? General/specialist?
If I can make timing work, there are three specialist books I could do, but not sure you've got access to (in order of preference):
Sweet Running Filly by Pat Johnson and Barbara van Tuyl The Crumb by Jean Slaughter Doty Dark Sunshine by Dorothy Lyons

Lol susan no need to feel guilty. If you haven't got time you haven't got time! So no pressure to join in but it would be nice to have you of course I was waiting on a few more entrants before deciding on a date, was thinking something like general knowledge in maybe 2-3 weeks time and specialist a week after. Out of those 3 books I have The Crumb definitely. I have read Dark Sunshine but I have a feeling I passed it on to someone else.

Well I must admit its been one I've been wanting to read for a while. Just seen a slightly cheaper copy on Amazon UK (tho ships from the USA) and as I have a bit of credit on there and some birthday money left over....oh go on you've twisted my arm!

Yea!!! So happy....it's the one I was most hoping to re-read soon. (Also it's only in pb, which makes it easy to stuff into my bag for the daily commute)

Of course it means if I like it I'll have to get the next 2 books in the series too....Susan you are such a bad influence!

A worse influence than you think...there are actually 4 more books in the series Seriously though, Sweet Running Filly reads absolutely fine as a stand-alone and, while the others are very good, this one is the stand out.

Hi again folks, pencil in Friday 1st November for Round 1 of the competition, general knowledge. We still don't have many entrants compared to previous years, so please feel free to put your name down any time before that date. I will need specialist subjects chosen as soon as possible tho. Anyway will set up the actual thread for it nearer the date. You may have noticed I have also set up a sub-board for all the mastermind comps to keep them separate from all the other quizzes.
