My oldest copy of Prince has a dedication by Josephine in the front which says "To Rosebay, my Adonis" Isn't that lovely!

The one I had was Collins Seeagull Library with dustjacket didnt realise there was a copy with pictorial boards with the same pic. Will check my website thought I had all the editions noted! Judging by the creases it looks like garej's copy has dj. maybe she can confirm.

Judging by the creases it looks like garej's copy has dj. maybe she can confirm. Yes it does have a DJ. I have a couple of Josephine's books which are (Collins) Seagull Library editions. Some have dustjackets, some dont (just laminated boards). I havent worked out whether some are earlier editions (my guess is that the ones with dust jackets are the early ones) though or why they did that. The picture on the front cover is no different whether it is a laminated or dj btw.

The laminated ones usually are ex-library or old school copies. Nearly all the old library books were laminated in that way, also some others were laminated by private individuals. The pic would be the same as its the same jacket under the laminate. Could yours be laminated and not pictorial boards exmoorfan?

I'm glad my childhood copy was the illus pb as Adonis is not overly exquisite on the photo pb and the seagull copy is rather tacky (or is it just me) ...however he is positively droolsome on the original cover art.......stunning or what? (sorry about crappy pic) Kunuma...I had not noticed the dedication...it is lovely and no wonder this one is so good if she based it on a horse she loved and thought that much of.

I have the Collins one too. I will read it once I complete my assignment for PGCE which has to be in by next Monday. Had an Ofsted inspection today from one of the grumpiest inspectors they could find! Feedback O.K though, but I'm a bit tired now. It's so tiring teaching F.E, all that paperwork, I have several forests in my office.

I'm also guilty of the garden versus paddock wish! Everytime I see someone's garden I work out in my head how I would turn it into a pony paddock, where the stables should go etc.

Can't think what you all mean!!!
Finished it last night and had forgotten just how good it is. The armada pb's must have been heavily abridged as my first has loads more pages but no extra illustrations. That is tomorrows nerd task to reference the main ones against the pb eds (which I am hoping are the same and not further altered between printings). Must get out more!

I think that Prince among Ponies should be held up as a shining example of how you do NOT need any adventures to make a good pony book - a pony is the best adventure! I still love this book, decades after I first read it!

kunuma I completely echo what you say. As someone who has had her fair share of pony-related adventures (being bolted with along the wrong side of a busy dual carriage-way was probably the 'highlight') I can certainly say that with ponies you don't need any extra adventure or excitement! What a contrast to the Black Pony Inn series this was. However I still manage to have one or two small criticisms (heresy ) which I will air when we start the discussion. Still its one of her best for sure.
