What are they?
In general, I would class a "must-see" horsey film in terms of its story, its acting performances, and the quality of its horse sequences (depending on what they are).
Going by that (and you can agree/disagree as much as you like), my list of must-see horse films would include the likes of:
War Horse Seabiscuit Into the West The Black Stallion The Black Stallion Returns Black Beauty (1994) Amanda Champions National Velvet
Any others?

Pretty much what I'd have picked too but I'd add Phar Lap, Hidalgo, My Friend Flicka (the original one of course!) and also spirit Stallion of the Cimmaron, as the best animated horse film.

I like International Velvet myself. If only it was available on DVD in this country.

Yeah, it's a bugger to get hold of! I saw it once when recorded of the TV a few years back. Could do with watching it again, but it hasn't held up nearly as well as its forebear!
(Also, would love to know how a horse not only changes colour, but grows its balls back between films!)

The only way to go is a region-free dvd player...I got one a couple of years ago and would never go back. It's essentially a hacked regular player I hacked my DVD player to play all regions so for me it's not a problem to play all regions. My Seabiscuit (the most recent one) is a region 1 and both series 5 and the Christmas specials of Keeping Up Appearances are both region 4. I have no problem. The only downside with hacking is that it does invalidate the DVD player's warranty but mine was only a cheap player that it was worthwhile paying for a new one than trying to get it fixed. Thanks for the link Susan.I knew about it. Ebay (UK) have it listed, but the seller doesnt have very good feedback. I would rather buy it from amazon.

Actually multi region DVD players are quite easy to find in the UK. But if you dont have one or dont want to hack your old one, you can also get round the region problems by connecting your laptop to the TV via an HDMI cable (if your TV is fairly new and has an HDMI port) and use the laptop as a DVD player. Or indeed watch the films on the laptop itself as they play all regions.
However I don't think the region is the only problem - some films are for some reason often really hard to get in the UK and a lot of people dont particularly want to buy from abroad.

I forgot to write here that I managed to acquire International Velvet on DVD - Region 0. Can't remember where from, although it might have been eBay.

Thats good going Daren, dont see a region O of it very often. You can get the region 1 NTSC format on Amazon but not everyone will be able to play that. Have you ever read the book Daren its pretty good.

I managed to get International Velvet, which is the Region 0 version off amazon. I ordered it off another seller, but they cancelled the order without explanation. I tried again off another seller (which I suspect is the original seller under another name - a bit funny if you ask me that two sellers with zero feedback have the same rare DVD). Just a note that the Region 0 DVD is NTSC format, which may be a problem for some people.
As for the Region hacking thing, I bought a portable DVD player (a Phillips one). I managed to hack it because someone posted the instructions in amazon's customer comments, even though I bought it from Argos (it was far cheaper there). So if you have one of those it may be possible to hack it.
