Flippin' animals!! I made a pool in a bowl for my pup today and she got so excited she ran full pelt into the back of my bad leg, knocked me down and now I can't put my foot to the ground - I'd have killed her but it took me too long to get up!! Cally I'm really struggling with Cushings with my pony at the moment - she's fine if I've got her, but can't cope with an 'ordinary' lifestyle. I'm really wondering what is going to happen with her

Moved Star into a dirt yard again last night, and then went down to the paddock with OH and youngest son with torches, to find another horse, Alfie, who has gone badly lame. Of course they were nowhere to be found until they decided to break cover and gallop up to the yards. Caught Alf, put him in portable yard and gave him some bute and some feed using the car head lights until his owner turned up. Vet reckons it's a 'strain' somewhere- very helpful. So back to 3 trips a day until the vet sees Star on Tuesday, and then- who knows? So tired today- woke up feeling ill and by this afternoon after a couple of hours in the car and sorting Star out I came home, got into bed and dozed / hallucinated and felt like spewing. Up at sparrow's fart to do it all again.

Star flat and will only eat oaten hay which I'm not to pleased about. One third of his yard flooded too. So worried about him- not at all sure I'm doing the right thing. 4 More sleeps 'til the vet comes. Temp. normal and still giving him byte.

Poor Star. What a worry. Hope he picks up again soon. At least his temp is normal. What with you worrying about Star & Lizzie, Kunuma with Heidi and me with Rosie - we'll all worry ourselves into an early grave!

I contacted Star's former former owner and was just touching base, telling her about the founder and Cushings, but how he was doing well now, which as everyone knows CAUSED him to decline the next day! She told me that when she bought him they told her he was 19-20 years old. Many years and one owner later, he was sold to me as being 18, so he could be......closer to 30! I've hurt myself badly looking after Star in the yard-mucking out, medicating him etc and today I spent all day in bed unable to move my shoulders. Have to have a chest x-ray Tuesday, respiratory tests and consultation Wednesday and the rheumatologist Thursday when I'll have to learn how to inject myself. Also I have a HUMUNGOUS zit on my chin surrounded by dead skin and I keep bursting into tears when I see kids, cute things and sad things. The boys are back at school after 2 weeks holiday and I just want to snuggle up to my 12 year old and cuddle him for ever. I never wanted more than 2 kids and now I can't I am so clucky I cry during nappy ads!

So, worked out Star will be 27 next week! Rode him back to the paddock today- God he was bouncy! And a lot skinnier. Had to deal with a very aggressive new gelding in the paddock- possibly an American Saddle bred, possibly a rescue case along with it's older, emaciated partner. Why do mistreated and neglected horses keep entering my life? My favourite paddock pal is lame- no diagnosis, and I'm trying to gently enter the idea of taking him on to Phil so we could ride together!

He's actually considering building a stable and yard in our suburban backyard for Star to live in! He knows of my plans, but realistically we can't afford it- we've spent thousands on our pets this year and I've used up just about all the $ I had saved up for our UK trip. But if it's a life and death thing, I'd take Alfie on- he possibly could be loaned to the RDA he's so quiet.

Get this- It's 8.41p.m and I am sick in bed and my partner and 12 year old son are at a horse health seminar starring Star the Wunderhorse as the poster pony for Cushings and Founder treatment. It'd be kind of cool, Claire, but imagine how many hours a day I'd have to spend grazing him in hand- it would get very boring very quickly.

Yes but on the plus side it would give you and Star a lot of the bonding time you were worried you weren't getting. Nice that your OH and kids are so supportive

Lizzie back to the vet tomorrow for an op to take out some of the scaffolding in her leg. Pulled out the Elizabethan collar again! And Phil and Tom entered a raffle at the horse seminar and won a $100 voucher for vet services for Star! Shame 8 days earlier I paid $380 for his bi annual vet check and dental treatment!

Lizzie's home, not even limping, but a bit dopey and bashing into everything with her Elizabethan collar again. She'll probably be a bit sore over the next few days but I think she's happier with all the metal plates and screws out. You could feel them under her skin- yuk!

Star's arthritis is worsening. The product containing Hylurornic acid that the vet recommended as they only product guaranteed to make a genuine difference hasn't reached Australia yet- she has a rich sponsor- eventing- who thinks nothing of purchasing the best stuff from overseas. I may never be able to ride him again, and if I have any chance I need to drop down to less than 50 kilos- so 15 or so to go. With all the other s**t in my life- illness, poverty, nothing to look forward to in the near or distant future except more worry, stress and declining health- I am at my nadir.

Sorry to hear about the arthritis. Can you not order the product yourself from overseas? Or is it too expensive.
Its odd (and unpleasant) how all the crap in life seems to come at once but you've got to tell yourself things will get better. But surely you don't have to get down to 50 kilos tho, that seems positively anorexic unless you are only about 4 foot 10! Who has told you you need to lose that much weight to ride him? But even if you can't what about the kids, could they not ride him? I know we feel that we should ride our horses but we dont ride our dogs and cats and we get loads of pleasure from them so perhaps even if he couldn't be ridden it wouldn't be the end of the world. Sorry if I sound preachy. I am just trying to keep you positive, believe me I've been in the same position you are in and it sucks. I've come to the conclusion that the only solution to all the animal related heartache, stress and financial problems is to have nothing to do with animals in the first place!!!

I had to google to find out what 50 kilos was in stones and pounds - I can't do kilos! It's 7 stone 12 lbs!! Seriously is some vet telling you that a pony can only carry that much!!?? I weigh 8stone 7lbs and would quite happily ride any size pony or horse - mine's only 13hh!! Arthritis is a horrible thing - I know, believe me - but seriously, keeping moving is the only thing that helps. Horse, dog or person, keep them moving! I'm really sad about ponies at the moment too, as mine isn't with me and isn't coping where she is living - I have to move to be able to have her anywhere near - it isn't fun trying to keep animals when you are broke! My poor little girl is costing me nearly half of my income to keep and looks miserable when I go to see her - life sucks I agree!

Sorry to hear Heidi is still having problems kunuma. I thought I was right about the 50 kilos being less than 8 stone but my maths isn't very good. That is ridiculous, there are kids on 13 hand ponies heavier than that!

I need to lose weight to lessen Star's load- me-and also I've been really ill and spent weeks at a time in bed in the last few months so I need to get fitter and stronger to help with my rheumatoid arthritis and heart problems. I'm not a big eater but I am bloody lazy! Toast and cereal and biscuits during the day then Phil cooks a big dinner. It's quite hard when you don't really have an idea of how long you have to live- I know everyone deals with that- but in the past 3 years I've had 2 cancer scares and in February this year was given months to a year or 2 and told to 'put my affairs in order'. It mucks your head around and you tend to stop thinking about life in the long term 'cos it might not happen. Anyway, I'm going to try and be more positive and try and be healthier tomorrow than I was today, if that makes sense. A mate of ours died last week of a heart attack and he was only a few years older than Phil and me so that isn't helping my mood any. It IS raining, finally, which has cheered me up no end and I enjoyed sliding all over the paddock this evening while Star took 30 minutes to eat his food!
Thanks for your support- as usual you've all cheered me up a bit xxx.

Agistment owner FINALLY gives us a couple of days notice to move into a nice lush green paddock, just hell for founderees. So Star and an Arabian gelding called Saki are going to live together in Hospital Paddock from tomorrow evening- should be interesting...interesting is OK, fisti-hooves are not. So tomorrow I have to clean out the back of the car and make some room for the saddle etc because I'm going to try and exercise him more until it gets too hot to ride, which will probably be in a few weeks. Snakes are out a month early so it'll be another hot hellish summer that last 6-7 months. I saw some gorgeous photos of the trees changing Autumnal in the UK and feel extremely envious! Autumn is my absolute favourite time of the year.

LOL it's true what they say about how "the grass on the other side of the fence looks greener" if you pardon the pun! What us lot over here think about the onset of Autumn is total panic at the thought of winter coming on and the cost of heating even one room in a house getting way more than a lot of folk can afford! Plus animal lovers worrying over those idiots with their damn fireworks coming up in November (wish I had some of the money they can afford to burn!!)- not to mention Autumn marking the start of blood sports season - so it's not all happy being over here!!

Kunuma know what you mean, we always have a week of fireworks at christmas and new year, as well as thunderstorms, the poor noise phobic animals have a really rough time! I have to stay home at this time of the year to comfort the animals, New Years eve is meds time for my greyhound girl, she gets so stressed We are currently experiencing very pleasant spring weather , but the opposite of you dreading summer, extreme heat and parts of Aus have already had bush fires. I think a climate where it is Autumn all year would be lovely

Star back in Hospital paddock and the yard overnight when it's really windy or raining. Grass in the alternative paddock too new, long and sugary for him to eat. Off to the bank after sorting him out tomorrow morning to transfer some funds and buy some expensive arthritis stuff- hyularonic (?) acid- and green lipped mussel powder for him. Did you know that glucosamine, which is in just about every joint supplement out, is really bad for horses suffering from Cushings and similar endocrine disorders? Increases insulin levels or interferes with the uptake of blah blah- can't remember the details. I take 25 tablets a day and one injection a week and he's close behind with all his supplements and herbs etc!

Managed to find some almost pure equine Hyaluronic acid at the saddlers yesterday- $110! So that was good. Then I went out this morning and every idiot on Earth was on the road and Star was in the paddock instead of the yard, full sun, thick combo on (-1 overnight) and NO POOS whatsoever, so I assumed Phil had yarded him and someone else had moved him out so I got grumpy until I found out Phil had left him in the paddock, then I felt pissed off at him. The lack of manure was a worry but I had to get home 'cos youngest was sick and they were still asleep! So I had all these plans to get stuff together, go out to the paddock again after 'Last of the Summer Wine' ended at 1pm. 10 Minutes into it and I got TERRIBLE gut pain and felt sick- the SAME time exactly that it happened a week before! So slept for about 5 hours and did NOTHING. Phil did Star and he had done lots of poos and was very cheekiy. Sod.
