I've mostly freed myself from the tyranny of box sets (only mostly, not entirely ), but I do have the same problem with series....Collins, Allen, Crown. Sigh............ Re the paperback/hardcover....that's responsible for a few of my duplicates too...I hunted down nice hardcovers with djs to replace tatty paperbacks from childhood, then found I COULDN'T BEAR to give up the tatty paperbacks!

Now that's interesting- I've never kept duplicate books, I keep the edition I like best and charity shop the discarded copy. I have so many books in a 1 bed flat I have to be quite ruthless and cull regularly.
I really like the old science fiction paperbacks with lurid artworks, so am replacing my modern editions with 60s/70s ones.

I'm pretty good at not having too many duplicates. I am slowly replacing tatty paperbacks with hardbacks. I need a lot of room too as I have 100s of books for sale as well as my own collection to fit into a smallish 2 bedroom semi. Anyway you lot don't know what temptation is! As a bookseller I have all these lovely copies actually IN MY HANDS and I have to sell them! You have to have a will of steel to stop yourself keeping them all and going bankrupt. Its like being a chocoholic working in a chocolate factory and on a permanent diet! I've felt like crying at some of the things I've had to sell....

Yes its a hard life ;D On the plus side I do often get free books when I get job lots and find some that I havent got but dont sell for much. Also if I've had a particular book for sale for ages with no interest then I might just decide to keep it for myself!

As a curiosity (and it does to to the incurable collector theme of this thread) what are the tatty pbs you're trying to replace? btw, I almost dread the extras in ebay lots....I keep finding MORE AUTHORS to collect that way ;D

As a curiosity (and it does to to the incurable collector theme of this thread) what are the tatty pbs you're trying to replace? OMG most of them! Jills, Jackies, PTs the list is endless! I tend to sell anything that is worth something so what I am left with for my own collection is the detritus or the orginal pbs I had as a kid and have been read 100s of times and literally wore out! The nice stuff I usually get for Christmas or birthday presents. I have a really nice copy of Pony Club Camp with a dustjacket for sale at the mo and I am sort of hoping no-one will buy it so I can keep it!

I remember well the day I decided to collect children’s books. I actually decided to replace the Nancy Drew books that (like a fool) I had donated to the library when I decided I was “too old” to have such books lurking about. Having discovered that the books I’d read as a child were revised, I decided to go for the originals, the editions that my mother would have read. Forgot to mention a couple of other authors I'm interested in - Noel Streatfield Noel Streatfield is one of the worst with multiple very significant revisions and multiple titles. The best site that I've seen for trying to straighten it all out is: www.whitegauntlet.com.au/noelstreatfeild/ChildFiction/Books.htmIt even has some comparisons of the original and revised (and revised again) text. Just browsing through some of the books, it's sad how many much of the story (and illustrations!) has been lost from books available today.
