Went out for another hack around the Braids last night - although I didn't manage to get any photos again! Should be out again on Tuesday, though, so I will try then!

Went to the Edinburgh introduction night last night - and, despite managing to forget the words to the Hunter's song (luckily last year's Hunter was there to pick up the slack!), it wasn't a bad night.
I spent a lot of the night talking about horse-riding, as it happens, although I did bust a few moves later on in the night (it takes more than a couple of drinks for me to get up and dance!!)

The one of me with Sally? Sorry, "Salsa". No, that was from the Penicuik one. I don't think anyone took any photos of me at all last night. Thankfully!

Well, another day, another ride. This time we stayed indoors, as the weather the past couple of days has been horrendous! Howling wind and driving rain? Sod that! I'm no fair weather rider, granted, but this has just been too unpleasant to ride in!
Anyway, a good bit of walk, trot and canter put in, although my back decided to twinge about 20mins into the lesson, so we had to call it a day early.
Anyway, after another weekend of intro sessions and so on, this time in West Linton, we're meant to be going for a longer hack on Tuesday: this time, from Penicuik to Dalkeith along the old railway line...!

It's no fun for horse or rider in those conditions so I don't blame you. Agree that hack sounds lovely

My new riding hat arrived this afternoon - a nice, shiny new Champion vented skull cap. I figured, if I'm gonna be out on the hills for four, five, six hours, I might as well have a hat that doesn't cook what few braincells I have...!!

The West Linton Whipman Play was actually a lot better than I thought it would be last night - the act with the flying dog being my particular favourite.
Oh well, back over to West Linton tonight - and this time I get to drink!

I managed to get home about 4.30 this morning - that was after getting back to Penicuik from West Linton at about 1am, when we decided we were going to a previous Hunter's house!! Good fun evening, though. Lots of alcohol, a couple of pub games, and yours truly surrounded by hot women! Forgot to mention that, after the Whipman Plays, last year's lass went to the Peebles intro night... and broke her ankle! So it looks like she'll be out of action for the whole summer! And, in other news, I think I now have the vast majority of my clothes that are required: suit x2 Kilt (Heritage of Scotland tartan) and full outfit (although I begrudge paying SEVENTEEN QUID on a pair of bloody socks!!) Jods, show jacket, boots, riding hat etc. Phew!

Jesus Christ, I am going to DIE!!! Went out on our ride this afternoon, around the bottom end of Penicuik and onto the old railway line. Within fifteen minutes or so, we were having a good blast along the track at canter, although this was cut short when we realised there was a bit of a fence sticking out onto the track. We had another couple of canters on the way, and then there followed a lot of trotting. I mean, A LOT of trotting. Now, I don't mind trotting, but after a good bit of this my back was starting to complain. I was thankful when we pulled into my old RDA haunt for a walk around the yard before heading back towards Penicuik. Then it started to get interesting...! We found a nice long track to canter down. No worries, thought I. Of course, I wasn't counting on the woman riding the bay mare behind me, who proceeded to overtake at a HELL of a rate of knots. Of course, Monny took this as a signal to engage his bat-out-of-hell gear. Now, my back, coupled with this new turn of speed, started to go a bit mad, and I was having trouble keeping my balance in the stirrups. I started to pitch forward, resulting in my foot slipping forward in the stirrups. Luckily, the riders ahead decided it was high time we stopped before we almost mowed down a woman and her dogs! On the route back to Penicuik, we threw in a few more canters, and again my back and legs started to give out. I had no balance at all, despite my best efforts to keep my heels down, and had to stop cantering and go back to a walk. I was quite thankful when we walked back into the housing estate, ironically where I lived for a while, towards the rally point we'd left from. So, in short, I reckon I'm going to die. Nice knowing you all!

Hair raising. It is tiring doing a lot of trotting when you aren't use to it. Your poor muscles!

Yeah trotting is definitely the worst once you get over 30 and start to disintergrate! its not so good for those of us with rheumatic knees either!

I reckon part of the problem stemmed from my stirrups - well, specifically, my right stirrup, which I think was too short, causing my back to get jerked around when trotting and cantering. Had to be that, I reckon, as up until lately I've never had a problem with trotting or cantering. And I seem to recall it happening when I first started out....

Hope you have a good day. Started off looking like a nice day here then it just suddenly started hail-stoning. Time for a trip to the moan about the weather thread methinks....
