The Horn Book, a long time US children's book review/journal, has put on line it's complete list of it's "Fanfare" books from 1938 to date....basically their choices of the best books of the year. www.hbook.com/2012/12/choosing-books/horn-book-fanfare-1938-to-present/#1940Scroll to the bottom to see the entries for 1938....among them The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein and (more to the point for this forum) The Far Distant Oxus by Pamela Hull and Katherine Whitlock

Actually, I'm scrolling through the whole list now....totally worth checking out....I can't believe how many favorites are on it......both the well known (they were ALL OVER K.M. Peyton, beginning with The Maplin Bird) and the more obscure (they loved Florence Hightower too!)
