A couple of years ago, I introduced a friend of mine to horse-riding. Now, Dave seems to think that the Western way, the cowboy way, is the more "MANLY" way to do it. Especially since you don't wear jodhpurs... I've told him, on numerous occasions, to get a grip. I get the feeling I'm banging my head against a brick wall. I've mentioned the likes of Scott Brash and Nick Skelton being a hell of a lot more manly than he and I are, and they DO wear jods...!!

Its strange that a lot of males consider riding, especially English riding, a bit cissy, but see cowboys as manly. It probably explains the disparity between the lesser amount of male characters in British pony books as opposed to American ones. This attitude is rather weird considering its a helluva lot more exciting and dangerous than playing football or other so called 'manly' pursuits!
I also have a theory why men don't like wearing jods but I think I will draw a veil over that as the tone of this forum seems to be slipping downhill lately ;D Lets just say it has something to do with male ballerinas in tights ;D

It is very difficult and expensive to get proper men's riding breeches today.
Mine were made in 1943, but were straight out of the packet new un-worn over (ahem) 30 ish years ago
I am thinking of taking up riding again, but unfortunately, they are 33" inch waist and I will not see that again or anything near, so I may be scouring the internet or getting a second mortgage to visit the tailors
(As to jodhpurs we used to call it the "Nureyev effect" - nuf sed)

Dave wants to try Western riding, but seems to think it's more the style of clothing, not the style of RIDING, that it's about... Mind you, I told him he would end up looking like someone from the Village People...!

No, no, despite the wet Colin Firth ;D I have to say cowboys to me are the epitome of a manly man! Tight blue jeans, check shirt, stetson and cowboy boots mmmm ! All preferably holding the reins of a gorgeous Quarter Horse! Coming back down to earth from my daydream - have to say that though I belong to the old school of get on the horse in whatever you are wearing at the time, and have ridden most of my life in jeans and wellies, I am rather impressed by those nice riding jeans they do nowadays. I always found jods too hot, esp as I usually wore black ones - (smarter for in hand showing) well that's the official line, actually they just need washing a lot less often! OK now off to look for a vid of a cowboy, don't expect me back any time soon! ;D

I can understand the "whatever you're wearing" idea completely. In fact, if you watch the video of me jumping Bracken, I'm wearing jeans in that!!

OK now off to look for a vid of a cowboy, don't expect me back any time soon! ;D Honestly what is that girl taking?!! ;D I must admit I like the dark jods or denims jods better than the light ones. Can't say I'm too fussy about riding clothes tho. Altho not quite as blase as the riders in bikinis when I was in Corfu! What about jump jockeys they are pretty manly too!

Well, when we went riding this morning, I went to pick Dave up, and noticed that he was wearing trousers. He seemed a bit miffed that there were no changing facilities (that I could see) at the yard, and that he couldn't get changed in the car as there were kids about...!! Tough crap! Man up and get a grip! ;D
