I read this book in an hour but what a nice little book it is. Basically a grandfather tells his grandson what a naughty boy he (the grandfather) was in his youth and how he ended up in Borstal. He gets taken on in the prison farm looking after Suffolk Punches and is given a young skewbald horse called Dombey to bring on. The horse is later sold and the lad doesn't know who to, but he is proud of himself that it was his doing the horse came good. After he is released from Borstal he eventually joins the Army and discovers Dombey is their Drum horse and he gets to ride him again. I like the info and history in the back of the book about Suffolk Punches, Borstal and cavalry horses including black and white photos and the book is very nicely illustrated by Michael Foreman.

Thanks for the review rosie. I forget I'd got this one out of the library. Will have to remember where I put it and give it a go.
