Dixter “Spider dog” and his brothers and sisters are saved from drowning by a Gypsy boy called Luke. Yes there are Gypsies in it! But no bogs thankfully. He takes them home but his mother and father want him to take them back to where he got them from and drown them! Luke persuades them there might be money in it if they sell them as Sussex Spaniels, which they aren’t, and they agree.
Deb and Richard are desperate for a Sussex spaniel and buy Dixter, unaware that his breeding isn’t quite what they think. However they fall in love with him and have many adventures along the way. But an old Gypsy woman who is fascinated by Dixter because he has a mark on his head shaped like a Spider, prophesises that one day Dixter will appear again and help the Gypsies get out of trouble.
All the children own ponies and there is a fair bit of pony action even though this isn’t a pony story. Deb and Richard own a pony called Tomtit who is quite lazy and lies down in the shafts when he’s had enough! They later on get a pony called Russet, a pretty chestnut mare who is a bit more of a handful than steady old Tomtit.
If you liked Doney then I’m sure you’ll love this book just as much. Its set in Kent, the same as Doney and the book is beautifully illustrated on nearly every page.

Thanks for the review. It does sound nice and good to know there are ponies in it, pity its usually a bit pricey. Are there any Primrose Cummings books you haven't read yet rosie?

The only one I haven't read yet is the story about a fiesty sheep. I wonder if ponies pop up in that one?
