It really is great....an Oscar nomination ususally means a film gets more time in the theatre too, which is always a good thing.

I know.....I was just happy to see it nominated! Yeah, so was I! A nomination is still good, though.

According to Wikipedia, War Horse has taken OVER $30million at the box office since the end of January! It's takings so far are over $133,000,000, on a $66,000,000 budget. I've not yet managed to see it again, though!

I think Seabiscuit is still a bit higher, but not an awful lot higher.
Also, Wikipedia reckons the DVD should be out in April. Fingers crossed!

If anyone is around London some time in the next few months there is a War Horse exhibition on at the National Army Museum. Its free to get in and is on until March next year. Includes stuff from the film and stage production plus info about real life war horses. More here: www.nam.ac.uk/microsites/war-horse/?gclid=CMT_wdyaxK8CFQQMtAodNRIwaQ

It's an interesting exhibition. There is also a sketch by Lionel Edwards who "On the outbreak of the Great War, he volunteered as a Remount Purchasing Officer along with his contemporaries, Cecil Aldin and Sir Alfred Munnings. " (wikipedia)

Thanks for the reminder Daren. Can#t believe its time for the DVD already seems like just the other day we were watching the film! Well I'll put a reminder on the War Horse film club thread for anyone who didn't catch the film at the cinema but who would like to join in with the discussion after watching the DVD.

Haven't seen the remake, thats the one where Ken has been transmogrified into a girl isn't it? I do have the original. May be quite fun to watch them both for a future film club and compare them.

Yeah, I was referring to the remake. I've not seen the original in years, mind!
I should have included Dreamer in that list: $38,741,732

I'm thinking of doing conducted tours round the film locations down here!! Cream tea thrown in! ;D Count me in, you live in a beautiful part of the world Kunuma and I'm partial to a cream tea ;D There seems to be at least half a dozen different places on the moor that they used, including Ditsworthy House and Haytor. I'm going to have to pluck up the courage to watch the film in order to work out which bit is where!

Oh gawd- I HATED it! Some of the stunts obviously went wrong and were kept in the film because they were spectacular. The one where the horse jumps the trench, doesn't make it and lands on it's SPINE in the trench made me feel sick. I REALLY wanted and expected to like it but no go. Speilberg was perhaps the wrong choice for director: too sentimental in some places. A bit of UK restraint and some more judicious editing may have improved it. Sorry guys!

That wasn't a botched stunt - that was a visual effect.
And sSentimentality is what Spielberg does best, though.

Yeah a lot of the stuff was CGI - thankfully animals aren't supposed to be harmed in the making of films or used in dangerous stunts nowadays. Although as a recent blockbuster proves, the way they are treated off the film set is sadly not well policed.

Perhaps that's why I find Speilberg boring- American sentimentality-overload makes me feel nauseous. I wouldn't be too certain that animals aren't harmed in films today: there have been several recent films and TV shows where horses have been emotionally distressed, put in danger and suffered painful injuries.
