I really wanted to like this book as I enjoyed her Heron Ride series but this one didn’t do it for me. I thought it might be interesting with the story surrounding the Second World War but I just couldn’t believe in any of it and I found Caroline really irritating. After making such a fuss about leaving Dinah her pony behind on the island when it was invaded by the Germans I think it just went flat at the end when she declared she didn’t mind leaving her pony behind after all! It was a Carnegie medal winner so I’m sure lots of people do like it.

Totally agree with you on this one rosie. I loved the Heron books, but I didn't feel any of her other horse stories were up to the same standard. I didn't really feel any emotional connection to this story, even tho it was well-written and I agree that she seemed to lose interest in the pony at the end of the book. To be fair I think it was more of a general adventure story than a pony book and it works better that way. But I am still puzzled as to how it won the Carnegie. Whats ironic is that its one of the few horse stories to actual win a prestigious prize and yet there are so many pony books out there which are so much better!

That it! That's exactly how I felt about it.
