Hi all some moral support needed here. At last my health has improved enough for me to start riding again and I am going for a ride next week! Its literally years since I've done any riding and am hoping I'm not going to make a fool of myself by falling off or something. I'm just hoping its like riding a bike and when you get on it all comes back to you! ;D
Has anyone else started riding again after a long absence and if so how was it?
Wish me luck folks!

I don't know if it will be like riding a bike but let us know, as I've only walked and trotted for a while now myself! Good luck!

I'm sure you'll have a fab time Claire. Are you having lessons or off for a hack?

I'm going for a hack. The riding centre is in stunning countryside so it will be nice to see it from a horse for a change instead of at ground level. (If it stops raining long enough to see it that is) If I get on OK I'll probably start having lessons, hopefully working up to jumping again. But I'm very rusty - will have to read all the Noel and Henry books again to remember the aids for everything

How lovely Claire I recently went for a hack in Yorkshire when on holiday, it was smashing! I don't ride that often and usually feel a little stiff the next day when I do, but it's so worth it! Glad to hear your health is improving

Exciting! Well i've never had a bike that can think for itself so i'd say not ;-) however i'd say you'll pick it back up soon enough. Never really had a break from riding (although thats about to change ) but i'm pretty sure you'll remember it all! Plus they'll hardly stick you on a wild thing for your first ride in years! I expect you'll be very achy though! My legs are killing me from riding my friends (very wide) connemara whilst she was on holiday. Quite funny as I ride my own horse everyday, I thought i'd be fine! Have an amazing time, theres really nothing like it! And get us some pics if you can

Thanks everyone, going tomorrow as a birthday treat to myself, so if I am not around tomorrow evening I've probably been bucked off into a bog somewhere ;D

Hi again folks, still in one piece! Had a fantastic ride, did some cantering and didnt fall off ;D In fact the hardest thing was getting off! Rode a lovely hairy piebald called Wally. Got some photos coming when they get sorted out. Hopefully I can start doing it more regularly now. And yes it is like riding a bike it does all come back to you!

Lol rosie very appropriate ;D I saw that riding place on the internet as it was in this promotion where you got a free riding lesson if you saved up coupons from various food packets but its a bit far from me. Hi trixipony, thanks and yes I am a little stiff around the inner thigh, buttock area but not too bad really, been worse off a long walk. What a shame about the RDA, I hope you find somewhere else to ride. Thanks for peoples birthday wishes, it was a good day altho after the ride the weather turned terrible and it rained none stop all afternoon. But got some nice books and other things for presents and had a lovely meal so all in all not bad (tho trying to forget the actual age I was celebrating!)

Glad you enjoyed it. I can only afford to ride sporadically these days (£80 for a two hour hack on Wimbledon Common!). I usually describe myself as intermediate but rusty when booking. I think riding stables get quite a few older women who haven't ridden since their pony-mad teens.
I treated myself to a 30 minute private lesson a few months ago, telling the instructor I'd need a lot of shouting at for all the bad habits I'd no doubt lapsed into. I'd even forgotton what riding on the left rein meant, and the sequence of letters round the school (all King Edward's horses can manage big fences....I remember now). I was scarlet in the face and dripping with sweat by the end of it.

I'm the same foxglove. I treated myself to a two hour western trek a few weeks back...boy did I have a sore bum afterwards!
I'd like to try side saddle at some point...

Crikey thats expensive foxglove. Thought it was bad here at around £20-25 an hour. I think I'll need a few lessons to get my seat back, I probably looked like a sack of spuds! I was never very good in the school, I've always been blind as a bat and could never even see the school letters! ;D I'm afraid I was more of an Evelyn Radcliffe than a Noel Kettering, preferred galloping about and cross country to dressage ;D I must admit I did get progressively stiffer as the day went by yesterday and still am today, but I did get a large barrelled horse - so I know how you felt after riding the connie, mysteryarab

Glad you enjoyed it (and a belated Happy Birthday).
Looking forward to seeing some photos.
I think the basics always remain in the mind - but the body doesn't always respond (or aches furiously afterwards).

I think riding stables get quite a few older women who haven't ridden since their pony-mad teens. quote] That reminds me of when I was young and had riding lessons there would always be some old fart in the lesson with all the kids and I would think I don't know how they can ride they're so ancient ;D And then before you know it the old fart is you! Well done to all who have started riding again and happy belated birthday Claire

I think the basics always remain in the mind - but the body doesn't always respond (or aches furiously afterwards). Lol and not just for riding either! A couple of pics of me riding round the school before we went out on hack. (my official photographer couldnt follow us out on the ride ) If you are wondering why both me and the horse are pulling faces its cos it was blowing a bloomin gale up there. Riding place is pretty high up on the moors. I think I must have been adjusting my stirrups in the first pic

Thanks mysteryarab, he was a lovely boy called Wally, and only a 5 year old. The riding instructor must have known I liked hairy coloured cobs!
The scenery on the ride was amazing, I'll see if I can find a pic on the internet to show the view I had.

Wally is gorgeous! Was it just you and the instructor on the hack? It looked rather a bracing day! I love riding in the Yorkshire countryside
