Just a bit of silly fun. Got the idea for doing this from the top 10 cliches thread. You can use it to work out the 'cliche rating' in the books you read, points given for each cliche and the total being the rating. Just for fun I thought we could work out some popular pony books and see which ones have the highest ratings. For instance, recently read Pat and Her Polo Pony by Shirley Faulkner-Horne. It got the following points: Pat is foisted on relatives whilst parents are in India (where else?!) - 3 points She goes from a complete novice to an excellent rider in a matter of weeks - 5 points Horse stuck in bog - 7 points Broken down race horse turns into champion polo pony - 7 points TOTAL 22 points Hope you enjoy working out some of your own ;D

You trying to say I'm over competitive or something! I think I can make a good start with April Jaffe's Satin and SilkGypsies - check - 10 Broken Down nag.... check -- 7 winning first gymkhana - check -3 Chased by bull - check - 2 making 22if quick sand counts as same as bog (has to be rescued from it) then - check - 7 Trek adventures (if their eventful hack with fog counts or the sand or bull incidents) -check - 5 making 34 if they countif I can have kidnapping (pony is stolen) and the inexperienced rider ones I can scrape over 40 ;D listed below is the cliches in this book - wasn't sure if any more counted so just listed above the obvious ones from your meter.* her previous pony is deceased (not that she seems to care!) * New pony was in poor condition/broken knees * Two weeks later new pony is in fantastic condition and the best money could have bought despite it's bargain price (naturally) * Within said two weeks she teaches it half and full pass amongst other things and it wins at it's first gymkhana (of course) * Pony is involved in a fire * Another pony gets stuck in a bog (well sand but same principle) * They get chased by an angry bull * Rescue a donkey from nasty Gipsy's (who else!) * Pony gets stolen * Pony is found in auction ring in nick of time dyed piebald (what other ending to this could there have been) * Get lost in the fog * Pony turns out to be super hunter and keeps right up with hounds after a long and difficult run (yes most of the others making up the field do not make it - one even breaks a leg )

I've added stolen pony to the meter as I am sure it merits some points - so I would agree that Satin and Silk would get 40 points!
Has anyone got a copy of Blackbird's Pony Trek as I am sure that would get quite a few poiints, seem to remember them going thru quite a lot of cliches in that one. Can't mfind my copy or maybe I sold it in disgust!

Not at all haffy I remembered you mentioned a book a while ago that had the most cliches in a pony book you'd ever seen! And having read your cliche-o-meter for Satin and Silk you weren't kidding!

I think I have 38, but some are a bit iffy. Its for Six Ponies -Snobby Rival- 7 -Pony Given as a reward-5 Noel gets a pony for schooling Romany -Inexperienced rider turns to champ- 5 -Winning in first show- 3 -Cures problem pony- 3 -Annoying younger silblings-3 "Sort of" Cheap pony turns into champion-7 (Ok she only wins a small riding class, but it may count) Instructor transforms riders- 5-The Major does give some instruction to improve them at the start.

Good going mysteryarab who would have thought one of our fav books so full of cliches - tho of course the others may have copied them from this book! I'll buy the instructor transforming the riders bit, but not sure if Romany can qualify as champion material at the end of the book. However you can add 2 points for Noels eccentric father who is an archeologist and not very down to earth so that makes 33. Does Marga get chased by a bull on the paperchase too or am I getting mixed up with one of the other books! I'll be generous and say points to anyone who can get more than 25 as I think 40 is a bit too challenging. Cant be many books as cliche ridden as Satin and Silk around surely....?

Ah true, I couldn't remeber about her father, at one point I thought he was dead, but then I deducted those points as I remembered he was writing a book or something. I don't remember anything about the bull, but maybe I have a later edition

Its ages since I read Nobody's Pony - can't even remember what happened in it!
Have updated the cliche-o-meter to include a few other cliches including rustlers (for the American books) and family moving to country from town which seems to happen in a lot of pony books.

I'll award points to haffy, mysteryarab and darkhorse for getting the 3 highest scores on the cliche-o-meter so far.
