Its the Deathly Hallows (last book) part 1! They've chopped it up into 2 films. I liked the Order of the Phoenix film but was disappointed in The Half Blood Prince one which was one of my favourite books in the series. They missed a lot out in this one so maybe doing it in 2 parts will be better.

Hi, yes I would be interested in watching this film if I can get hold of it. I didnt realise it was out on DVD already. I agree they are not as good as the books but they have been fairly entertaining. I wonder how they will do the last film as the book was a lot more adult and darker than the others.

Now this would be interesting to do, because I am probably the only person in the world that not only doesn't get the whole Harry Potter thing, but actively dislikes the entire badly written genre! ( Runs and hides behind sofa)

What genre do you dislike - or do you mean you just dont like the Harry Potter series? Which ones have you read? I have to admit the first one wasn't that great but I thought the writing improved as they went on. I wouldn't say they were badly written altho they did have some cliched characters and plot lines. Be interesting to hear what you have to say against them....no really, not being sarky I like hearing different points of view.

LOL yes I'm calling the whole Harry Potter thing a genre on it's own ;D ;D Hmmm, what don't I like? ?? The story, the characters and the setting?

But that doesnt mean its badly written. I loathe Mills n Boon books but I would guess that quite a few of them are written proficiently. Anyway need more detailed criticism

OK - seriously, I didn't like the way she wrote, although tbh it did keep changing, I have heard rumours the rest were ghost written after the first one, which wouldn't surprise me

Its funny how you can just dislike someones writing style. Mind you talking of bestsellers being badly written has anyone read (or tried to read) any Patrick O'Brian. I thought I would read one after seeing the movie and I like historical stuff but I managed about 3 pages before I gave up. Does not know what a paragraph or a full stop is! SOme sentences were about 12 lines long!!! And deathly dull prose to boot. How the hell they have become bestsellers is beyond me!
Sorry for getting off topic!
Hmm just thought I may start a thread about bestsellers people dislike or think are badly written. Nothing like a good slagging off session to get the blood flowing ;D

I saw it in the cinema a couple of months ago, so I can probably talk about it, but I probably wouldn't watch it again. (Can you tell it wasn't one my my faves?)

Oh dear - well I wasnt holding out a huge amount of hope after the last film, but I will watch it anyhow. At the worst, we can have some fun picking holes in it. Darkhorse, if you can't get hold of it, let me know and I'll lend you it.

Get yourself in a jolly frame of mind. A glass of wine mightn't go amiss. They appear to have shot the film through a gray filter....literally and metaphorically.

I didnt like the films much as they kept changing it, but the series as a whole was excellent. Ok, the first few were a bit baby-ish but I guess she moved with her audience. I started reading them at about 9, and finished at... what 15? I cant remember when the last one came out. They are very clever how the all interlink

Did you see the last film mysteryarab?
Well I guess not enough people are interested in this to have a proper film club discussion but would be interested in the comments of anyone who has seen it. Just watched it the other night and agree with susan. However the book itself was almost devoid of the humour which was one of the best aspects of the series as a whole so I dont think we can blame the film entirely for its po-facedness.
TBH only read the last book once and cant really remember everything about it but the film did seem to follow the plot quite well, which is probably as it has been split into 2 parts. But as someone else said on another forum it feels more like the film is just setting things up for the big finale and the end of the film tailed off somewhat. Splitting the film into 2 didnt work the way that splitting up The Lord of the Rings did. With TLOTR the book itself was already separated into 3 sections and each worked as a unit on their own. In this film they just seemed to have drawn a line dowen the middle of the book and chopped it in two!
I think the best part of the films were Michael Gambon who plays Dumbledore and the boy who plays Ron, but both Ron's humourous style and Michael Gambon were missing from this instalment.

;-) Actually, LOTR was one volume....submitted all of a piece by Tolkein to his publisher (and they'd been waiiiiiting for the sequel to the Hobbit for YEARS). It was the publisher who decided to break it into three segments...and the movies didn't break in quite the same places as the books, which were much more cliffhanger-ish!
Anyway, if you're not going to take up old Harry for the next film, can I suggest National Velvet? Seems like an appropriate time, with Elizabeth Taylor passing away recently, to look back at the beginning of her career!

Ok if you're gonna be picky they didnt quite break it up the same as in the books but each film followed the gist of the 3 volumes, whereas there was no real natural cutting off point for the Deathly Hallows at all. The film of The Hobbit is also going to be in 2 parts, seems to be becoming quite fashionable to do so. Wonder where they are going to end that the first one? Hmm funny how it has turned circle in the film world we have been waiting ages for the prequel of Lord of the Rings to arrive! ;D Oops forgot to say yes I think National Velvet would be an excellent choice for the next film club 'watch' - it will be quite interesting to compare a racing film based on a book with the 'true life' racing story of Secretariat we watched last time, not to mention comparing the film with the Enid Bagnold book. Also its easily available and can even be watched on youtube. I'll set up a thread for it shortly.

Hobbit is going to be a two-parter? That's RIDICULOUS!!! It's not a particularly long book, and of all the books, it's the only one actually written for children, and thus (in my opinion) the worst book to break into parts to be shown over (I assume) the course of two years. Greed....that's all it is, pure, unadulterated greed.

Totally agree, I was shocked when I found out it was to be in 2 parts, as you say its not a long book and the plot is far less complex than TLOTR, would easily fit into 1 film.

Did anyone see part 2? Just watched it on DVD and a huge improvement on part 1, in fact prob one of the best in the series (even tho the book was one of my least favourite). Not usually a fan of editing books for films but in this case I think condensing the 2 into one longish film would have worked much better than splitting it into 2, as the book itself tended to ramble on a bit. It looked really good, the dragon was fantastic and it was more emotional than some of the other films. I liked the final Snape denouement, which I also liked in the book. But why did they have to keep the mawkish ending from the book?!

I did see it in the theatre, and definitely agree, much less gloomy than part 1 (which is odd, given that its the part where everyone dies!).
Re "book itself tended to ramble on".....lol, you're not kidding....the whole middle was like one of those endless family camping trips where no one can work the cookstove, the tent leaks, the insects are rampant, and by the end everyone is at each others throats. Good times.
