Well folks decided to make this the first film cos a) I've got it! b) lots of people want to see it c) its new and most people won't have seen it before.
If you are a member of one of the DVD rental clubs like Lovefilm you can probably get it there. If you can't get hold of a copy please post or PM me as I can pass one around if people dont mind posting it on to the next person when they've watched it.

Also with films based on real life you can have fun pointing out the bits they got wrong!
Glad you are managing to get a copy Rosie.

When are we going to start discussion? I've found I can rent it on Amazon video on demand, so I can join in too!

Great to hear you can join in susan. Do they take long to send the DVDs out on that service? Have sent kunuma a disc with the film on so hopefully she will join in too.
I should think we could start the discusion in about a weeks time. This is just a guess as its a bit trial and error with it being our first film. So it could be modified. To make it easier please let me know if you want to join in with this one and if you want to but havent got the film.

Claire, Amazon video on demand is a pay-per-view streaming service...either to your computer or, since I have a Roku converter box, straight onto my tv, so it's instant.

Is that service available in the UK susan? I'd like to join in with this one.

from what I can see on Amazon's UK site, it doesn't look like they do Video on Demand, unfortunately....I can't imagine that they won't get into it eventually though.
I think the big driver in the US is that more people have devices that allow them to watch internet content on their tvs.....fewer people want to watch tv on their computers. Apple, Google and Roku all sell dedicated boxes and wii, many blu-ray players and assorted game systems support streaming video, so I think it's a case of hardware driving content.

Ah I thought it was one of those services that sent them out in post. Yes I think you're right susan, it seems a bigger thing over there than here connecting computers/internet to TV. altho its starting to gain popularity. I can do it with my laptop but its a complicated system of wires and other odds and sods so dont bother. I just watch most things on my laptop anyway as I can see it better! I am actually a member of one of those streaming pay per view sites but have only ever watched the free films on it as I dont trust the internet connection to muck it up and waste my money. I also think you have better internet than us (I know practically the rest of Europe does!) It really is hard finding a decent ISP over here. But thats a whole different discussion....

:-) Nobody is ever satisfied....here the complaint is that our internet speed is sooo much slower than in Asia!
The service that I subscibe to, Netflix, uses both discs in the mail and streaming....the newer content (like Secretariat) is only on disc, as the movie companies want to squeeze the biggest profits possible out of every movie, so they won't license streaming at a rate that is commercially feasible on new titles. It's usually very fast shipping, but because Secretariat is so new and so popular, it had a note on it that it would be a "long wait" for that particular disc, which is why I went hunting around to see if I could get it elsewhere, even at a fee, so I could see it in time for the group discussion.
;-) Hopefully it won't happen again.....the rest of the movies on the list are older, so as long as they're available in the US at all, I should be able to get them quickly through my regular subscription service!
If your cable systems are anything like what we've got in the US, I'd bet you'll see more internet tv providers pop up soon enough....cable here has got to be SO expensive, and the vast majority of what you pay for in their packages is of so little interest to you, that the appeal of dumping them is almost overwhelming!
My roku box ran about $60 (I think the price has dropped a bit since then), is about 5" square, and was hooked up (by me) in 10 minutes and voila! I downgraded my cable package to essentially just do the news channels, which was a great savings, far more than offsetting what I pay for the Netflix subscription ($10 a month).
With it I could do Hulu plus to watch new tv shows (they don't have enough content yet to make that appealing, but someday...) and rent movies from Amazon if I'm desperate to have a particular movie NOW (like Secretariat!). One of my biggest irritations with my cable provider was that you had to PAY for a higher level package just to be ALLOWED to pay an additional charge to rent a movie. Grrrrrr....

I'm so out of touch with evrerything connected with TVs as I havent had a TV license for years and only watch programmes via the internet. I do have TVs but I only use them to watch dvds or videos. TBH I can count on one hand the number of times I've missed having the TV service! AS you know susan for years we were far behind you having only the 5 channels but now there are hundreds available there strangely seems far less you actually want to watch. Its like they have so many channels to fill they have to keep producing cheap rubbish or endlessly repeat stuff just so they have something to put on them.
I checked on blinkbox which is a streaming film service available to UK viewers but unfortunately they dont have Secretariat on it. (It has quite a few free films on it but I dont think any horse ones will double check just in case)

ROFL....that's just what people here say...."500 channels and THERE'S NOTHING ON!!!"
Pre cable we didn't have many more channels than you did....three main networks for news and new tv shows, and many, many small local stations that ran old movies and old tv shows. One of my tiny locals ran westerns all day Saturday (horses!) and old British movies all day Sunday, which is how I was introduced to the Ealing Studios (Whisky Galore, Passport to Pimlico) and the St. Trinian's girls ;D ;D
I've been seriously thinking of cutting the cable for a while now...I don't miss anything I lost when I dropped several levels and have been thinking that I could well feel the same way about axing it all.
btw, I think you're totally right about the quality of content...the day they figured out that they could get people to watch "reality" shows, which cost them nothing to produce, instead of actual, professional entertainment (you know, where a real writer produces a script and real actors and actresses perform....aka the good old days), it was the death knell for tv.

You've never said a truer word. I loathe those reality shows with a vengeance and I also hate soaps so this leaves precious little worth watching on the TV here. Its hard to believe how good the TV actually was in the 1970s and 80s, when you think of all the great shows there were then. And comedies were actually funny... Oh dear better not get started on this I could go on for hours....

I don't miss not having a tv, although it sometimes makes it hard to join in with conversations in the staffroom!

Do we have a start date for the discussion? Not sure how soon to watch the movie, 'cause I don't want to have forgotten everything before the group starts (brain like a sieve these days )

Hopefully everyone has managed to get copies of the film by now so if we start discussion in a day or two's time will that be OK by most of you?

Works for me, I plan to watch it tonight....I'd meant to watch it ealier, but got caught up in the premier US dog show, Westminster (the equivalent of your Crufts). This year was apparently the first that Westminster had the same Best in Show judge as Crufts, and he picked the Scottish Deerhound (the first time that breed has won, and a very popular decision given the crowd's reaction).

lol Rosie, no it was a polite request. Anyway its standard practice on book circle to ask for a copy if anyone has one so similar on the film club. Actually I am being a bit cheeky puttin the pair of them on the spot ;D
