Hi all, as promised have set up a separate section for our DVD film club. I thought we could do one film a month or so. To save endless discussions on choosing the films, we will have a short list and I'll choose the film for that particular month (being assertive for once lol) People can join in or not as they feel like. As with the reading circle if you want to join in and havent got a copy of the film just post or PM me and we will try and sort something out. If you want to add a film to the short list post here. The film club will mainly be concerned with horsy films but from time to time we could also do non-horse films which will be of particular interest to the forum members. I hope lots of you will take part and you will enjoy it.

Sounds like a blast! One to add.....Seabiscuit...you've got one version on (I assume the modern one?), so it might be fun to compare/contrast with the original (which has the added bonus of actual footage of Seabiscuit racing). Here's a link to it's page on imdb www.imdb.com/title/tt0041923/A couple of bits of fun info...I just noticed the writer credited is John Taintor Foote, who published a few horse books/short stories of his own. And, totally unrelated, I recently re-watched Twelfth Night with an old friend...it was her first time seeing it, and she exclaimed at how young Helena Bonham Carter looked it it, and thought it must have been her first role. We looked it up on imdb, and nope, far from being her first role, which was (grin, I've dragged this out a bit, haven't I?)....in a 1983 TV adaptation of K.M. Peyton's Pattern of Roses www.imdb.com/title/tt0213989/

Oh yes, will add a New and Old version addition to Seabiscuit. Interesting about John Taintor Foote, have read a few of his racing stories before. I must have seen that film before as I used to watch a lot of Shirley Temple films with my gran when I was a kiddiwink but if so I cant remember anything about it.

It wouldn't be surprising if you missed it, Claire....take a look at the pic on imdb...she's not a little girl, she's grown up. She didn't do a lot of adult roles, I think basically because the public simply wouldn't accept her as an adult.

Ah that would explain it, she still looks like a little girl on the film cover to me tho! (Not sure if its cos I'm half blind or that everyone under 30 looks like a kid to me nowadays ;D

LOL...I know what you mean! Temple was 21 in that film though, and already married and a mother.

Link to this thread which has a lot of horsey ones named:- ponybooks.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ponyfilms&action=display&thread=422Other ones that aren't listed include:- Secretariat (it's available as a Region 1 DVD, but I suspect because it wasnt released that long ago, that it will come as Region 2 DVD soon) The Secret of Moonacre (based upon The White Horse by Nina Bowden) The Derby Stallion (modern film with Zac Efron about teaching a racehorse) The Horse Whisperer The Colt Let It Ride (British racing comedy with plenty of British actors, doubt that there is a ton of horsey action. More info found on Wikipedia) I know there has been plenty of discussion on the board, but it's all in pieces, so would be great to have it all in one place.

Had a look round and found even more:
Miracle of the White Stallions (yes, it's Disney, but still)....story of the evacuation of the Lipizzaner stallions from Vienna during WWII and the subsequent rescue of the mares by the US Army. Lovely footage of the stallions performing in the Spanish Riding School
Into the West....ok, it's got a fantasy element, so it won't be for everyone, but a good film!
Peter Lundy and the Medicine Hat Stallion...film adaptation of San Domingo by Marguerite Henry....have to admit, this one is a stinker, but could be fun to watch just to tear it apart!!

Just been re-reading the posts and have to amend some info: The Secret of Moonacre was based on the Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge. The film was a bit of a disappointment.
I think the Miracle of the White Stallions may be on the Crescent Moon Youtube channel. Will check. Lol. re Peter Lundy, wasnt there also a Brighty film too? And King of the Wind. Am still trying to track that one down to no avail.

Wow.....I wasn't aware of Brighty or King of the Wind....Marguerite Henry may well win the "most-filmed" author award!
Brighty is available on my movie subscription service, Netflix, as is Moonacre, but no King of the Wind here either. I took a look at the imdb page for it, and was surprised, as it's so recent, and has such a great cast, that it isn't available. From what I see on ebay it came out on VHS and on LaserDisc, but never on dvd. Pity.
The two films I've longed to see for some time are both Disney, The Horsemasters, the adaptation of Don Stanford's book of the same title, and The Horse With the Flying Tail, which was a short documentary of the American showjumper Nautical. The latter won the Oscar for best documentary.
I do wish Disney would do what Universal and Warner are doing....have a dvd-on-demand service: titles that aren't deemed to have enough of a market potential for commercial release are made available as a sort of print-on-demand...you order it, they make it and ship it to you. Individual movies run just under $20, so the price isn't obscene for a movie someone wants desperately and can't get any other way.

I didn't know there is a film about The Horsemasters. I'd love to see it. The book was fabulous, one of my favourite reads of last year in fact.

I only found out about King of the Wind after seeing a trailer for it on an old video I was watching a few years back. Been trying to find a copy that wasnt an exorbitant price ever since! Its my favourite Marguerite Henry book.
There's also a few different Flicka films including the one they made recently in which Ken was transformed into a girl!
There are quite a few films which have been made from horsy books, slightly surprising considering the genre is considered the lowest of the low in many quarters. I usually add the film or TV version of a book on the appropriate page of my website, have been thinking that I should try and compile an a-z list of them all.

rosie....I don't think The Horsemasters was ever a theatrical release, it looks like it was a two part tv special, part of the Wonderful World of Disney tv series. It was released on VHS in the VERY early days, when they were so over-priced that only rental places bought them.
Claire...that's so weird, King of the Wind is my favorite Marguerite Henry book too...most people like Misty (or one of the Misty series) best.

This looks fun, I LOVE Seabiscuit, brilliant film, although i've only seen the new one. Plus, if it makes it cheaper, downloading films is always easy (eek.. illegal I know.) But you can get some pretty good quality ones so ya know. If anyone wants help with how to download them i'm happy to help Anyway.. horse films! Black Beauty (of course) The Horse Whisperer Spirit ( its a disney film but the horses are amazing lifelike) Racing Stripes (Zebra... but a lot of horsey content. Bit silly though) Hidalgo The Long Shot Dreamer Flicka and Flicka 2 The Colt Ruffian Wow I watch too much tv! Reccoment Flicka/Flicka 2 and The Horse Whisperer

Disney did a bunch of horse movies for teh Wonderful Of Disney.... hard to find them though. I got Bluegrass Special from their movie rewards program. I belive they've had others.... Then theres.... Sylvester Return Of October Several differnt Black Beauty's, though IMO the last one was best. Also alot of westerns are centered around the horse. Roy Rodgers, Gene Autry and other "Singing Cowboys" Geepers..... I am stuck. I know I can list more. I know I've praobly seen more, but my mind has gone blank....... old age is setting in. I'll get back to you when I can come up with more.

Thanks for the info susan. I do have a copy of the video now so if we decide to do this for the film club in the near future I can lend anyone it. It does however deviate from the book somewhat.
Come to think of it, its a while since we did a film. Maybe once the hols are over we can get back to normal and start doing our regular things again.

Hi folks, now that Autumn is well and truly here (well for the brits & americans at least) I was wondering if we could start off the film club again. I have a couple of suggestions for the next films - The Silver Brumby which would be good as we could compare it to the book which we did in a reading circle a while back. Another suggestion is My friend Flicka, I thought it would be quite fun to watch the original film and compare it with the recent one in which Ken was transformed into a girl!!! Anyone who wants to join in let me know. I have copies of all the films I can lend to people.
