Hi everyone. Do not believe everything you read in books Cally. Not everyone in the UK cleans tack after every ride and many ponies live out all year. Some would be unrideable for their young riders if they were locked in a stable all the time. Perhaps the other members of the forum did clean their tack every time, I did not know anyone that keen!

Not me!! I only do synthetic tack these days so it can go without cleaning or be bunged in washer...mine live out 24/7/52 too. Hi newbies btw

As per what the above two posters said, nobody ever cleans their tack these days every single day. Plus with synthetic materials some people these days rarely need to clean!
Probably you find the "cleaning the tack every day" in older books (pre 1960s) - when nearly everyone had a groom, which done it rather than the rider. Grooms worked 12 hours a day in those days, so they had to fill their time with something!

When I first started riding (around 1976) I agonised over whether to wear a shirt and tie to my 1st lesson! (I gave the tie a miss- I did wear a shirt you'll be glad to hear.) I really did want to live in a pony book- still fancy it, actually; no drought, snakes, faint inducing heat etc etc.

Hi I'm zoe. I've only just got a computer and the first thing I'm doing with it is tracking down my fave pony books from childhood. I've just bought and re-read the "Jill" books and they're as good as I remembered. Some of my other faves were Pat Leitch and the Pullein-Thompsons, although I'm not fussy I'll read anything!

Cheers. I forgot to say in my intro that I've got 2 ponies,2 dogs, 3 kittens,3 chickens and 3 children[and a long suffering husband!] So it will be nice to have some "me" time and talk to you like minded people. [although I should probably be feeding something or helping with homework, nevermind, the washing up can wait lol!]

Thanks, it is lovely having them but lots of work. I suppose they keep me out of mischief although I wish my chickens would lay more than once in a blue moon.-They're bantams and not a good laying breed. I didn't know that when i got them I just thought they looked cute!

Welcome Zoe- good to see another mum and animal servant on the board (I have 10- it was 11 on Tuesday but one of our guinea pigs popped his clogs from old age, poor poppet). No ponies, unfortunately and of my 3 fowl, only 1 duck is still laying sporadically. p.s Jill books were the 1st one I started buying back- BE WARNED: it is addictive! I have well over 100 now and constantly on the lookout for more.

good to see another mum and animal servant on the board Sounds about right but don't servants get paid?!! Sorry to hear about your guinea pig, they're lovely little things. It's too late to warn me about buying books, I've already got myself a little ebay habit . Thanks all for the welcome, I was a bit nervous joining a forum but you all seem great.

Hi, I'm Snowfilly (Sorry, Kunama, been using this username for a few years now and too lazy to change!)
Just old enough to regret allowing Mum to throw out all my pbs, and old enough to be earning enough to replace them. Loved the Silver Brumby books, with Jinny second I guess. But I always enjoyed the obscure standalones from boot sales and the like...Red Rocket being one of them.
Hope to meet some like minded people around here.

Hello, I recognise some names here from Jane Badger. I'm Irish, horseless, and have just joined this forum to put off working on two assignments. I'm steadily building up my ponybook collection and have just caved and ordered Six Ponies in tatty paperback format...

Hey Lily and Snowfilly Hope you enjoy it here! Oh and Zoe, sorry didnt see your question before hmmm well the picture is a bit stretched thats why it looks so big but I would say its about 3ft6ish.. I think, who knows! The only jump with a measurement on it is the one I use to keep track of progress. He always over jumps anyway thats why I have to stick it up a bit lol x

Hi to Lily, Snowfilly & Konstanze!
I think the way you keep your horses is great, Konstanze- as natural as possible but with some regular handling throughout the year. I bet they have far fewer health problems than a lot of stabled horses and are happier animals to boot, which of course is the most important thing of all!

Hi Konstanze, I'm impressed, your horses lives sound wonderful - and although you can't do the physical work, I bet you work damn hard organising everything. I know what you mean about other people's advice on horsecare. The other day someone I know was trying to persuade me to put a rug on my daughters pony because........she would be cleaner!!?! (Daisy is an 11.2 welsh mountain who is slightly overweight). This person just gave me a funny look when I told her Daisy didn't need one as if she thought I would run out and put a rug on her the second she told me. Luckily I rent a private field so I can get advice when I need it but its not constantly offered.

I might take you up on that invitation one day Konstanze, as I am constantly refining my itinery for my dream trip to the UK based on visiting horsey places such as Redwings and the ILPH farms as well as places of outstanding beauty & interest; Mull, the Orkneys etc. Your horses are very lucky to have such an enlightened owner! Most horses in Oz are kept this way, but the sun is the problem here rather than the cold!
