Hi all, I'm new to the forum. Absolutely adore pony/horse stories despite being a bit close to 40! Am in the process of trying to write a book myself; unfortunately I'm great at beginning things but not so good at seeing them through. If I ever do publish a novel it will probably be called 50 Unsuccessful Starts... I loved the Jill and Jinny series as a child (still do), some of the Pullein-Thompson books and Anne Digby's A Horse Called September. These days, I'm enjoying reading lots of more recent equestrian fiction via my kindle; some good, some brilliant and some in need of a good edit/re-write!!! I have an aged piebald gelding who is a professional pasture ornament and a motley collection of cats who aren't professional anything. Looking forward to discussing books and finding new reads on here

Welcome Korm. I'm the wrong side of 50 and still enjoying pony books A great way to describe your old horse as a professional pasture ornament.

Hello from North East Scotland. I grew up in South west England dreaming about ponies, reading about ponies, pretending to be a pony and eventually courtesy of a rich uncle (yes they do exist outside of pony book world) having riding lessons. I was lucky enough to have a pony on loan in my teens which was gymkhana and Pony Club heaven.
I took a break from horses when I went to uni and started a career. I bought a horse of my very own about 25 years ago: a light grey part bred Arab, she was very fast cross country, scary to show jump and dressage could be interesting :-) I had Faith for about 10 years before losing her to malignant melanoma. I was devastated to lose my dream horse and it was a couple of years before I could hear to get another one.
Marley was a black gelding ex racehorse I had on loan from the Thoroughbred Rehab Centre. He was an absolute sweetheart when I had him, though he had been a real handful when the TRC first got him. They did a wonderful job of transforming him from a nervous ex racer to a really nice riding horse. He was sharp in a typical TB way, but never nasty and willing to give everything a go. I had to let him go back to the TRC after I was injured in a car crash and couldn't ride.
I have fully recovered from my injuries, but not currently looking for another horse. I am having lots of fun collecting all those books I gave away err um 30 years ago. I loved the Jinny books as a teenager and am delighted to find there are many more of them than I thought and I have recently finished all the Catnip reprints. I am currently trying to find all the Monica Edwards books, I so understood Tamzin and Rissa's wishing ritual! I may have done something similar....
I had half a dozen pony books from my childhood that have moved around with me and dipping into them has been a guilty pleasure for many years. My revived pony collection has now outgrown my bedside cabinet and is starting to take over the bookshelves. I think joining this forum might be a dangerous move!

Hi Fallada and welcome to the forum. Thanks for telling us about your horses. What a shame you had to give up Marley. Maybe one day another horse...? Lol most of us here have to content ourselves with pony books rather than the real thing altho some are lucky enough to be horse owners. As Rosie mentions there are a lot of Monica Edwards fans on here too. Hope you will enjoy visiting us and joining in with discussions, quizzes and the like. You can also check out our facebook page where you can find all the latest news, new pony book releases, etc. www.facebook.com/ponymadbooklovers

Hi, I found this place after discovering an old copy of Josephine Pullein-Thompson's "One Day Event" and being reminded how much I loved pony books and the West Barset Pony Club ones in particular. I never had a pony but rode from 7 to 17 mainly in the New Forest.

Thank you. It was a great place to be.... no fences apart from the inclosures, few roads, and the old aerodromes to go like the clappers down at times... . I liked most of the PTs.... Augusta and Christina, Sandy and Lawrence and the hunt cont p 94. I also read Monica Edwards, the Jill books and of the contemporary (for me!) the Blackbird Cottage and Caroline Akrill's Eventer's dream series.

Used to have a crush on Henry but Noel seems a bit wet on re reading.

Hello everyone! My name is Tobi, aka Pintaloosa. I am pleased to see that I am not the only adult here I am 25 years old and I have a 6 year old daughter. We own an aged TB gelding named Buddy. I was horseless until I was 19, and I bought Buddy as my first horse. My lucky daughter has grown up having her own horse to love, even if he is not really suitable for much (paddock ornaments are still fun lol). My daughter has inherited much of my pony book collection, but I still have a lot of favourites I would like to find her. She will have quite the collection once I am done! I mainly joined so I could hopefully read other members favourites so I can remember what to find for her (my memory is shocking. I just remember basic story lines!). I am currently reading her my very old and much loved copy of The Silver Brumby which belonged to my Mum when she was a girl, so it is quite well travelled and very well worn Black Beauty will be next, and then Silver Brumbies Daughter (which also belonged to my Mum!). I'll also be getting her into the Harry Potter books, but that will be amongst Pony Pals, The Saddle Club, etc. I look forward to being a member ^^

Hi Tobi welcome!
You can't go wrong with Black Beauty although get the hankies ready!
Have you read the Jill books by Ruby Ferguson? Or the Pullein-Thompson sisters many excellent series? Or maybe K.M. Peyton or Caroline Akrill. So many excellent pony book authors...yes your daughter will have a huge collection by the time we've finished!

Goodness yes, many adults here, and not exactly spring chickens at that! Welcome to the new members, and congrats on zipping through the Summer Reading Challenge, gunslinger! Thanks Rallycairn. I feel a bit of a fraud since they are rereads so far and I have learned shorter editions but it has been such a joy to rediscover them. I will try to read a properly new book aswell... or at least before I indulge in the other favourite PT series of mine (Chill Valley Hunt and Augusta and Christina).

Hi all I had no idea this forum existed! I am trying to find out which magazine I used to get in the 1990's, I am guessing it was Pony Magazine or Your Pony (can't remember the changeover date) and inside was a cartoon series about a girl with blonde hair I think riding a solid light grey mare with white mane and tail and found a "Ghost horse" who was black. The last episode I remember reading, showed the ghost horse encouraging the mare to jump over a ravine or something, the background was an orange/red/yellow colour and I can't remember if it was to escape a fire or something. Anyone who understands my waffling and knows which magazine and ideally issue's would be amazing! Thank you in advance! Lil

Hiya Kirki04, I think I said hello on another thread but sorry for the slow 'official' welcome - somehow missed this post entirely!
Hope you find something of interest to you on the forum and/or website and there's also a facebook page.
I'll zoom across to the Pony Comics thread now cos I missed that too... probably post Christmas malaise lol.

Hi all! I found this board through Facebook. I always have loved message-board format for chatting, etc. -- I grew up with it really so I'm most comfortable with it. Nice to see a fairly active forum still around! I'm from NJ, USA, and I have one pony who is the love of my life, whom I named Dr. Watson. I absolutely LOVE horse and animal books; particularly fantasy. My favorite book of all time is Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams (a cat fantasy epic), and among my other absolute favorites along the equine lines are The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West by Mary Stanton (she also wrote the Unicorns of Balinor books which formed most of my childhood), Bruce Coville's unicorn books, Birth of the Firebringer by Meredith Ann Pierce, and several others. I'm always looking for books similar in nature, particularly to The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West and I have not been successful yet. Of course, all the classics are dear to my heart -- Black Beauty, King of the Wind, Black Stallion, Misty of Chincoteague, etc. Here's a pic of my beloved pony:

Welcome, Dr. Watson! Your pony is absolutely gorgeous, you lucky thing!! There are a number of horse books with fantasy elements...one of my favorites is Patricia Leitch's The Black Loch, also published as The Horse from the Black Loch. It's British, but had an American printing too...link below is to a copy currently on ebay, it's the same edition as the one I have. Abebooks is another good source, or even your local bookstore...I got my copy from a used bookstore in my small-ish Massachusetts town The Black Loch on ebay Two by Shirley Rousseau Murphy had fantasy elements, very light though, so not strictly fantasy. Originally published in 1967 (Sand Ponies) and 1972 (White Ghost Summer), but recently released for kindle, and pretty cheap: White Ghost SummerThe Sand Ponies
If you don't mind straying into unicorn territory (and looking at your list of favorites, you do like them), Tanith Lee's The Black Unicorn is excellent. Again, I picked my copy up locally, at a new bookstore, but it's widely available used and is also on kindle The Black Unicorn
And last, but not least, two superb modern books Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater Led by the Grey by Peter de Cosomo

Hi Dr. Watson, sorry for the slow welcome. Been mega busy organising our summer reading programme and I missed your post. Glad to have you on the forum. I echo Susan, your pony is absolutley gorgeous! I also love The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West but I haven't read the Unicorns books by her - will have to look them out. Hope you enjoy coming on here and having a chat. We're a friendly, down to earth bunch here

Thought I'd just say hi, seeing as I'm new here I guess my story is the same as many other people's; pony mad from from childhood; my mum reckons it was after a Dartmoor pony (accidentally, and not hard!) bit me while I was feeding it a jam tart; I have no idea what my parents and grandparents were thinking, letting me do this, but there you are! They're not horsey, although I thought they would have had more common sense ; rode (although never my own horse, sadly ) until I got married and family and children got in the way, but never stopped loving horses, or reading pony books My favourites would have to be Jinny (I know she can be maddening, but she's so alive and vital, and, as an artist, I do identify with her) and Jill (I just love her 'voice', she speaks to you in just an immediate, fresh way), and I have a very soft spot for the two early Ruth Hollis books as well. Thrilled to have found this place; I live with my 20 yo son, and he does get bored of me blathering on about horses sometimes, although he's very good about it; I listen to his music
