All the talk of Olympia, shows and the M & M classes has got me thinking about showing in-hand. Has anyone ever done it? I love in-hand showing much more than ridden, esp the M & M. I got interested in it years ago when as a child I spent a few summers on a farm in wales. The farmer bred welsh ponies, (section bs, cs and my all time favs welsh cobs) and rare breed goats and used to show a few of his animals. Went to quite a few of the agricultural shows down there including the royal welsh and fell in love with the ponies shown in hand, especially the welsh stallions which were amazing, and have always loved to see the classes. Unfortunately I have never shown in-hand myself, except for a goat!! ;D (got a 3rd!) Would love to talk to anyone who has. At the mo I visit some of the fell pony society breed shows as this, along with the dales, are the 2 native breeds of the area I live in. The pure bred Fells are breathtaking with their amazing manes and tails!
Also can anyone think of any novels about in-hand showing. The only ones that spring to mind are the Connemara trilogy books by Anne Henning. Caroline Akrill did mention showing in a few of her books but as far as I can remember it was all ridden.

Hi Claire am much more in to inhand than anything else, the stud, at the stud I worked at it was nearly all in hand, I love producing for it, the boys always took them in the ring but I got the satisfaction of knowing I had produced them. Have just started last year to go in the ring myself with an Exmoor and now my own section c and I love it. Fells are beutiful

Hi Claire..I love in hand showing..I know it's subjective but i prefer it to ridden because I get bored watching the long class....The ridden seems to have even more Judge favorites...My favorites are natives..Partly because I love them and also because they are easier to produce.. (no plaiting etc) County shows are best because the judges are experienced and people are nicer than local shows..( in my experience ) I really get a tingle when we enter the ring..I have shown Exmoors. Welsh ponies.,Welsh Cobs., New Forest ,Dartmoor and Connemara ponies.. My friends have Highlands too..Another friend has Dales ponies so my experiences are varied.. My friend has a Fell who is a very strong pony and up for anything.. Natives are the best...lol

The notts showground is prob the nearest to me, maybe 150 miles away?? Not exactly sure about the malvern have only a very vague idea where it is (disgraceful considering I have got an A level in geog - but it was all glaciers and mountains formation, etc, never actually told you where places were! lol!)

Sorry for butting in but remind me when it's Newark and Notts time as I would love to meet Arfa too.
Upload your pics onto photobucket Seahorse, (it's free) then copy the IMG code and paste it into your message and voila your pic will appear and people need to see how georgous that pony is!

seahorse that is very nice of you I would have no problem taking time off, just have to ask the boss...thats me! But I would be terrified of mucking it up. The only thing I've shown before is a goat! But if you dont mind letting me loose with arfa I would really love to go. It would be nice if some of us could meet up there wouldnt it? Whens the actual date?

I will have to check date but it should be the second week in August, you would not muck it up if I can do it anyone can, anyway farts is such a tart (excuse language) he show himself, hopefully haffyfan will come down as well and would love more ponymadbookloveres there, I will check dates in morning and when the schedual comes out will let you know. I told farts he will have a new mummy for a class he just said good and asked for a bannana he does any thing apart from stop that dam cribbing for them. Am off to bed now two days of holidays left.

Hello arfa farty pants Thanks for your message. Can't wait to meet you, you remind me of a pony I used to ride a long time ago, not as good looking as you of course. I will have to smarten myself up for the honour as I am a bit of a scruff too (not that I'm saying your mum is I'm sure she isnt!) Lots of love and cuddles from your auntie Claire xxx

To Aunty Claire
I am sure you would look great, a word of warning I like to trot fast so good foot wear essential. Mum had to force herself to wear trainers like proper welsh showers, she is still deepley in shock as she was always used to shuffleing round the ring with other more boring m & ms. Next time you speak to mum can you tell her I have run out of bannana ag ain and I did not mean to break the fence down to day to get to where the carrots are or should I say were. Its her fault for leaving the net there unfortutly she caught me with head in the area where carrot net was I did think about blaming sprite, she so mean she would not go down the shop and get me more to go in my feed.
Look forward to meeting you lots of hugs Llanmurfin Arfa (fart monkey) ;D
