www.animalaid.org.uk/h/n/NEWS/news_wildlife/ALL/2329//I am not a fan of Prince Charles anyway - but this has turned me into a total anti royalist. Surely of all people the royal family are in no position to demand that incomers are tortured and killed in order to bring back the indigenous species!! I am thrilled to have a grey squirrel on my bird table, I went shopping today and bought nuts for it instead of coffee for myself. Seems like the harder our wildlife tries to live along side us, the more we persecute it. LEAVE THE SQUIRRELS ALONE CHARLES!!!

On behalf of the North American gray, I thank you :-)
Seriously, I hadn't realized till I read the article you linked to that the breed had been imported on purpose. The result should be a warning to all: introducing non-native species (animal or plant) has repercussions far beyond anything you might imagine.
The gray isn't a problem in the US because it belongs here. Climate (severe winters) and more importantly native predators (fox, coyote) keep it's numbers naturally in balance. (In my town it actually coexists quite nicely with a smaller black squirrel.)

Surely of all people the royal family are in no position to demand that incomers are tortured and killed in order to bring back the indigenous species!! Ha like it! ;D Not a fan of the royal family either. Surely they have caused the death of enough animals without adding more to their list? What annoys me is that humans almost always cause these ecological imbalances in the first place, as they did in this case. We have a lot of grey squirrels here, coincidentally just got a fright from one today as I was walking past a bin near the river and it leapt out right in front of me. I love watching them, they are not only cute but fascinating to watch.
