Bonfire - maybe from one of the numerous Black Stallion books (The Sulky Colt perhaps)

Smiley belongs to Wendy of Dorian William's books "Wendy Wins a Pony", Wendy Wins Her Spurs" and Wendy at Wembly"
Thanks for the clue....I'd never have got it without that!

Blood Bay Colt owned by old Jimmy Creech, trained, driven by young Tom, the apprentice.
Question....I've never seen a British book about harness racing (trotters or pacers)....is there simply no harness racing in the UK?

I'd never seen it either susanb - until I lived in Wales which appears to be the heart of the sport - had an impressive track surrounded by mountains where I was and they had trotting and pacing races. Such odd horses, not the most beautiful, and very quiet - but boy could they move!

Correct susan! Good book too. There isn't a lot of it in the UK. Trying to fire up my feeble memory but I think that Rogue in Dido and Rogue by H M Peel ended up getting broken for harness racing. Or am I getting mixed up with something else?!! I'm sure some kind soul will enlighten me!

Have added all the answers now the only ones you didnt get were:
Witchcraft - owned by Fran in Horses in the Glen by Gillian Baxter
Laddie - owned by Mr Timms in Pony Sleuths by Elinore Havers
Congrats to all who worked out answers. Here are the winners:
1st Susanb
2nd Kunuma
3rd Darkhorse
(I'll add your 'prizes' to 'your tack room walls')
Highly commended: Mysterarab, Roie, Susan, Zoe and Beswickcollector ;D
A new quiz coming this weekend and will try and do one each week.
NB - edited as had a senior moment and got Pat Leitch and Gillian Baxter mixed up!

Just out of a matter of interest which book did the other Kitty come from Claire? I've been racking my brains but can't think, and it's now driving me nuts! Looking forward to the next quiz!

gah! I knew I was going to smack myself when I found out where Witchcraft came from! Horses in the Glen is by Gillian Baxter though, not Pat Leitch. I have the EVIL book club edition....the one where the horse on the cover looks posessed, which is why I should have connected it with Witchcraft right away :-)

Susan you spotted the deliberate mistake! Have changed the author on my above post and apologies for the senior moment folks. I just have Pat Leitch on the brain at the mo! I've got that edition too - its scary!

I'd never seen it either susanb - until I lived in Wales which appears to be the heart of the sport - had an impressive track surrounded by mountains where I was and they had trotting and pacing races. Such odd horses, not the most beautiful, and very quiet - but boy could they move! Like kunuma said, it seems to be more popular in Wales rather than the rest of the UK. The neighbour to my parents house used to race, and it spent the rest of it's life living out in the field opposite, so I used to see it. Unfortunately it used to live with an evil Welsh pony (section c), who on more than one occasion chased me through the field. It was extremely pretty and used to win lots of prizes, but boy it was a nasty mare! I used to live 5 mins down the road from here. www.tirprince.co.ukWe do have coverage in the UK of harness racing, but it is on a channel called S4C. S4C is broadcast to the whole of Wales (and available to the rest of the UK on satellite) but the programmes are in Welsh. FYI if anyone is interested, the programme is called Rasus. It's currently off air as the season has not started yet.
