The snow is really P***ing me off at the mo. My parents couldn't come down for their weekly visit cos of it, I couldn't get the cat to the vet, and the bin men haven't been round which is a pain as we only get our bins done once a fortnight here anyhow. Its forecast for a few more days so no doubt there'll be piles of rubbish lying around everywhere soon (oh well at least the snow will cover them!) The next thing will be the lorries can't get in for deliveries so there'll be no food in the shops! As I said before this country is useless at coping with inclement weather.
BTW did anyone see the tv prog about the 1963 winter which was supposed to be the worst one for snow? I wasn't born then can't imagine it being worse than 2010-2011 winter!

We are still on the edge of it all - it snowed first thing, then rained on it, then I thought it was OK to try to get out, only to discover that it changed from snow to rain, and vice versa round pretty much every corner - one minute the windscreen was covered in snow, the next it was raining, and that is within only a few miles. The weather people keep saying, "you'll get it bad tomorrow" well they have said that yet again for tomorrow but I'm hoping they will be wrong again...................tempting fate! As an old, old person I was around in 1963 but too little to remember - I've seen the photos though - it was Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad! I saw some of the programme - funnily enough where I had been digging myself out of drifts last week was mentioned as being somewhere hundreds of motorists got stranded overnight!!

Here its the cold more than the snow...the wind chill was -30c when I left home this morning.
Investigating the possibility of a balaclava or ski mask...don't care HOW ridiculous I look!

Lol susan I was thinking about knitting a balaclava in a jazzy colour myself (so I wouldnt look like a bank robber!) My face is the only part thats uncovered when I go out and you really feel it dont you! I also have a nose that turns rudolph red in the cold while the rest of my face stays pale so I look really silly. I have had comments that people can tell the temperature by the shade of red my nose goes. ;D
Haha you probably think the British are obsessed with the weather by the size of this thread.....and you'd be right! ;D

From one season to another, it is THE topic for people in New England too! The heat and humidity in the four months of summer, the cold/snow/sleet/ice in the six months of winter, the tropic rain in the one month of spring and the sigh of relief in the one month of autumn. The snazzy balaclava sounds like a fantastic idea...wish I were a Domestic Goddess! I've no idea what color my nose turns when it's cold, but I do know that it still hurts from my walk home last night

I feel bad for you all having such a large dump of snow while we are enjoying our fine temperate summer. On the downside, we did have a heatwave and some catastrophic bushfires, which are still burning but now in containment lines. On the mainland, they still have out of control fires burning. It was good to see co-operation as we had firies from interstate and overseas come to help us with ours. Fire season won't end until late February for us. Thinking about it, I think I would prefer snow as you can plan for weather like that but bushfires just happen and often you only have an hour to get out. Everyone keep safe and I hope you don't have to go out on the dangerous roads. Cheers, Vera

Gosh yes, fire is just terrifying! We've got an awful fire season here in the US, but its largely on the west coast, so it's nothing I've ever had to deal with....I hope you're in a safe area Vera! (And that you get some rain soon!)

Well I never thought I'd be saying this but come back snow all is forgiven. It may have melted and we may be having a heatwave but torrential rain and non-stop gale force winds have been worse than the snow! I'm never satisfied!

Awaiting the arrival of the blizzard.....they're predicting 32in" (about 81 centimeters) of snow today/tomorrow. Sigh. They're expecting very high winds as well...have fingers crossed for power, because it's no joke being without in February in New England.

Seriously! And they've added the potential of Thunder Snow to this afternoon's forecast. Sigh... (For those who have never experienced this bizarre weather event, it's a winter snow storm so violent that it actually produces thunder and lightning in the middle of a snow storm.) Getting home from work this afternoon is going to be such a treat

It is supposed to snow here on Sunday. If that werent bad enough, I have a huge gap where my lovely gas fire used to be (had workmen yesterday and today installing a new central heating system), which is just brilliant *scarcasm*. Meaning that I will have a cold blast coming down my chimney.

woozers 32" Susan. Sheffield ground to a halt tuesday morning (yet again!") with about 10 cm's worth....cos the rain washed all the grit away of course (we won't even bother to ask anymore what year the said grit was put down in!)

Lol haffy was just going to say this country grinds to a halt with 2 inches of snow never mind 3 feet. Fingers crossed it won't be as bad as forecast susan. Do you live in a rural or city area? We only tend to get snow that deep in the country.

Thunder Snow wow that sounds a joy...not! Garej I know how you are feeling, we had our hot water tank give up the ghost, only 5 years old So we had no heating or hot water last week while OH installed a new one. Hope your central heating is sorted quickly.

Made it home!
Wow.....really nasty out.
I live in the southwest suburbs of Boston......in the exact spot that gets the worst snow (sigh). Boston itself isn't getting spared this time though, they'll be getting 2 feet. The coast is expecting flooding as well, because the wind direction (and we're tallking 70 mile an hour winds) will be driving the sea up onto the shore....the next two high tides are going to be bad, they're already asking people to evacuate some areas on the coast.
Its the 35th anniversary of the worst blizzard this area ever saw, and with that in mind, the officials are taking no chances....they've ordered a driving ban beginning at 4pm, all public transport shut down at 3:30pm. In 1978, the sudden midday intensity of the storm caught people by surprise.....they left work just in time to get into the middle of it, with snow falling at the rate of 2 in or more per hour.....cars were stuck on the highways for days. After the storm, rescue crews literally walked from car to car to see if people were still alive.

Good luck in the storm, susanb!!! I have seen that Thunder Snow thing once and it was at night, so we got the full effect of the lightning in the snowstorm - it really freaked everyone out

Good luck susan. At least it sounds like your country takes better precautions than ours does! Funny how heating always seems to pack in in the middle of winter, or the landlords always want to start working on it in the midst of winter. Last winter my boiler packed in completely

Funny how heating always seems to pack in in the middle of winter, or the landlords always want to start working on it in the midst of winter. Last winter my boiler packed in completely Well I am hoping that mine wont pack up considering it's brand new. I just hope that I wont be freezing due to the big hole in the living room instead of where the fire was. You have to love the logic of putting a brand new central heating system in the middle of winter.
