I love KM she is one of my fav authors too. Susan the sequel to Who Sir Me Sir is called Downhill All the Way and they go on a school ski-ing hol in that one. There is also a 3rd book in which Nutty and Hoomey appear but as more minor characters and its not as funny. But forgot the flippin name Interesting about Decie Merwin writing another pony book I thought Holiday Summer was the only one.

Claire...I knew it was a skiing one, and think I have the title jotted down somewhere, but thanks for posting the title....now I'll make SURE I've got it noted! (Hm...wonder if the library has it....the librarians in the US really like Peyton, so I've had good luck finding her books there).
Re Merwin...I know....from the title, you'd hardly think it was a pony book!

Yes I have noticed that there are a lot of ex-library copies of K M Peyton books for sale in America. She has also been published in large print over here quite a bit. The first time I read Last Ditch it was a library large print copy!
Talking of K M books has anyone read her newest ones: the Roman Pony series?

I have just started Flambards and bought a copy of Who Sir. Also found a 2nd edition of the Pennyfields in great condition and have just finished Monica Edwards' Punchbowl Harvest which I know isn't a Pony book but I enjoyed it none the less.

I am reading Shelley Peterson's Sundancer and loving it! I'm not sure why i didn't start reading it sooner tbh as I loved Dancer, Abby malone and Stagestruck and it has been in tbr pile for a year or more. I love the 'Jilly Cooper' way her characters lives intertwine. Abby has already shown up in Sundancer and there is a, if you like, 'historical' link between Hannah (the main characters Aunt/guardian) and Abby. Sundancer also has a link to Abby/Hilary/Dancer, it's all in very much the same way as Jilly's favourite characters tend to pop up in her other books even if it is by rights a stand alone (Pandora, Wicked). I would highly recommend them personally however Dancer was ripped to pieces in a blog I read ages ago .(..will try to find it...however the Blog was written by a TB/Saddle club fan so nuff said me thinks )so it may be down to personal preference (in which case I would think Claire will hate them ;D )

I am in the middle of reading Minna's Quest by K. M. Peyton which is the first in the 'Roman Pony adventures' series. Quite enjoying it so far. Its set in Roman times as you may have guessed, and I like historical stories anyway.
I think that the main reason KMP is one of the only one of the 'old skool' pony authors writing a lot today is that she has branched out a bit. Blind Beauty was I think the last of her traditional pony stories. Her latest ones have been more general stories with a strong pony element. Like the Gains series, Minna's Quest is historical, has a bit of adventure and a bit of romance, which will prob appeal to non-pony readers, but at the heart of it is the relationship of a girl and her pony just as with Fly-by-night and the like. Maybe this is the future of non-magical/non-fluffy pony books....?

The Chestnut Filly is not one of my fav Primrose Cummings books. Not sure why it just doesn't strike a chord with me. In general I like her later ones such as No Place for Ponies, Mystery Trek, etc, better but then again I do like Wednesday Pony which was written about the same time as Chestnut Filly.

exmoorfan....K.M. Peyton actually has a web site, here's a link to the page that lists all her books: kmpeyton.co.uk/chronology-of-booksA couple of notes: Pennington - a Trilogy is an omnibus of the books previously published as Pennington's Seventeenth Summer, The Beethoven Medal and Pennington's Heir The first three books, Sabre, the Horse from the Sea, The Mandrake and Crab the Roan were all writen by Peyton under her maiden name, Kathleen Herald. Most everyone likes Sabre and Crab, opinion seems split on The Mandrake (I liked it). North to Adventure, Stormcock Meets Trouble, The Hard Way Home and Brownsea Silver were a series about a pair of Sea Scouts, aimed at teens. (I found North to Adventure slow going, but liked the others).

Susan I liked The Mandrake too altho I can see it making some readers slightly uncomfortable as its not in a traditional pony book mould at all. Astonishly mature for someone in her teens to have written it tho! Unlike most people I much preferred it to Sabre, altho I thought Crab was by far the best of the three 'Herald' books. Exmoorfan have you read Small Gains? I would recommend it, especially if you like Flambards as it goes back to her historical melodramatic roots. Also there is some really interesting stuff about the old Norfolk trotter horse breed and the competitions they used to have. (The sequel Greater Gains is not as good) Minna's Quest was interesting and also historical but not as good as the Gains book either. BTW I have finally remembered the name of the 3rd book in which Nutty and Hoomey appear! Its called The Boy Who Wasn't There: www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/p/k-m-peyton/boy-who-wasnt-there.htm

I read Flambards a while ago and picked up Summer at.... but it appears that there's one in between (typical). Just finished Jacky jumps to the top (a great read) and am reading the Pony Raffle now. I'm trialling a weekend job at a dressage stable on sunday- 'don't know how I feel about working with stabled warmbloods (including a stallion) who have stereotypies and bad attitudes due to their over confinement. Oh well- I'll see how it goes. It'd earn me enough to pay for my lad's agistment and food each month so I hope it's bearable at least!

Hi everyone. Thanks claire will look on Amazon. Rosie i can lend you the others if you would like.? Know idea where you are though. Cally the one inbetween is Edge of the cloud. Then you have a sequel Flambards Devided. You could read in any order but for me it is a continuing staory of the family and I found i preferred that and couldn't put them down. Rosie the Swallow series have have a trilogy.? Starts with Swallow Tale, then Swallow Summer, followed by Swallow Star.. I wish there were more.lol

Missed this, I am just reading one of hers that had certainly passed me by previously - TheSound of Distant Cheering - Penny buy off Amazon and I would certainly recommend it if you haven't already read it although I am not finding it as compelling a read as say Blind Beauty, free rein or Darkling (as in I CAN put it down) the characters, to me, are not up to her usual standard -maybe this is why I have not really heard anything about it previously.
It's another set in the racing world and was possibly marketed to a more adult audience than her usual 'pony' books are?

I'm only a couple of chapters into Flambards in Summer and loving it, but from what I've picked up in it re; the 2nd book, I think I could give it a miss- she and Will go to Battersea, Russell dies, Will goes to war, dies etc etc.
I'm desperately behind with chores etc and slept in this a.m but I just have to finish the chapter where she finds Violet or I'll go mad, so byee...

Hehe Cally how many times have I not got on with chores etc cos I just had to read more of a book....lots!
Edge of the Cloud seems to be the odd one out in the Flambards series cos its not orientated on the house and grounds of Flambards itself but in the outside world. Also its more about planes and cars than horses and farming which prob makes it less interesting to the likes of us. But its worth a read for the growing independence of Christina's character. I like the first one the best still and its the most horsy.
