Here are some more about characters being afraid to ride or losing their nerve.
Call Me Brave by Elizabeth Walker - this is a modernish one. Quite good. It actually reminds me of Gillian Baxters Bargain Horses as both are about domineering mothers trying to force their unwilling daughters to ride mad horses. This one isnt quite as good but worth a look.
Also one of the Jackie series has a subplot of a boy who has lost his nerve of jumping and is jealous of his brother. He gets it back by riding for rescue when Jackie causes Misty to be hurt. I think its Pony Camp Summer.
In Riding Days in Hooks Hollow by M. Oliver the main character is frightened of horses.
Then there is Will in Flambards (if u count as a pony book) who despite being born into a family of hard-men-to-hounds is terrified of riding.
Midnight Horse in the Sandy Lane series - Charlie loses his nerve.
The Orange Pony by Wendy Douthwaite - havent read for yonks but I seem to remember the girl in it was frightened to ride a particular pony.
Gay and the Ponies by Elinore Havers. One of the sisters in this loses her nerve after a fall but is helped to regain it by rescuing her poodle.
Next task to follow shortly. I will think of an easier one this time!

Ooo! A ribbon! I got a ribbon! Thank you, didn't think I was even in the running :-)
BTW, weird isn't it, that in the UK it's generally called "rosette" after the gathered bit at the top, in the US it's always "ribbon", after the trailing ribbons. And yet they look the same, with the exception of the reversal of colors for first and second (all the other place colors are the same).
