Since it's nearly May and therefore just over a month to the summer reading challenge I thought that I would start a discussion thread. It's my favourite time of year hence my eagerness! Though currently speaking the weather is awful wet and windy!
I have already purchased the rosettes everyone is getting a tartan one this year! Will post photos at a later date.
My suggestions for categories are
- we do the recommended book as per last year as I think it worked well - we pick a new book (know what I am choosing) - we choose an author that has published at least one book under a different name. Examples include JMB, KMP, the PTs, Ruby Ferguson and Mary Gervaise. It doesnt necessarily have to be a work that has been published under a different name as in many cases they are non pony and/or hard to find. For example I could pick The Horse Sale by CPT. Just as long as the author concerned has published under a different name.
If anyone has any other suggestions post away!

Yea, that time is here again! Will have to think on suggestions....one thing though, you might want to change title of thread, as it says "2018" not "2019"

How about not a pony book but has a pony in it?, I now some famous fives have horses in them, Im shore there are heaps more, like Trixie Belden or Secret Seven. some of the school storys had a pony crazy girl in them.

Hi folks, some great ideas there. I particularly like the non-pony book with a pony in it and the author published under a different name suggestions.
And looking forward to the tartan rosettes Garej, thanks very much!
For my own suggestion for a category, how about something with a non-horse/pony equine in it, like a donkey/mule or maybe even a unicorn!
I'm actually toying with the idea of starting it a little bit earlier this year, but don't worry there will still be plenty of time to get sorted out! Please feel free to put your names down for the challenge as soon as you like so I have some idea of numbers.

It all sounds good to me!
I had an idea of going with a bunch of circus books that have been lurking in my tbr pile for ages, and the "pony in a non-pony" book would fit in with Streatfeild's The Circus is Coming (US title Circus Shoes).
One other I've read and can recommend is Knightsgate Players by Gillian Baxter, especially for anyone who enjoys theatre books (like Pamela Brown's Blue Door series).

I have got the majority of my books back due to redecoration. Found two copies of A Pony in the luggage and A stallion called midnight. Was planning to read a stallion called midnight for the summer reading challenge so that's good. Also got back Rivals to Silver Eagle so that's me sorted.

Also some of the PTs books have ponies in them even though they are classified as non pony. For example The Boy Who Came to Stay by DPT is a general farming tale but a whole chapter is taken up by the main character learning to ride. It's religious though so it may be offensive depending on your point of view. The Eastmans Move house and Granny Comes to Stay have ponies in them. Both are by CPT.

I've read that but I can't remember a horse in it - I must be going senile! I do like Noel Streatfeild's books. For anyone who likes fantasy I'd recommend The Wickedest Witch in the World by Beverley Nichols for a pony/horse in a non-pony book. Though I do have it on my website as a pony book, it's more of a general fantasy/magic/witches story. For an author writing under another name I'd recommend Sue Elaine Draws a Horse by Gillian Baxter under the name of Gillian Hirst/co written with Marion Mould/Coakes, the famous showjumper of the time.

I'm crawling back out of the woodwork to catch up! I'm remembering The Circus is Coming- wasn't the story about a pair of liberty horses and one was sold and the other one pined?? Will have to reread it quickly - am currently rereading Edith Nesbit's books so that will fit right in.

Also remembered that The Gipsy Children (CPT) had a horse in but from what I remember they are used for transport rather than being an integral part of the story. Admittedly I haven't read many non pony PTs so there may be more non pony PTs with ponies in them. Definitely no ponies in are A Place With Two Faces (JPT under the name of Josephine Mann), Father Unknown (CPT) and Dear Pup (DPT) plus another CPT book whose name escapes me but was racist.

Changed my mind regarding the new book. I have found out that Gillian Baxter's latest book is available as a physical book so that's me sorted. Also doing a non pony one this year but it doesn't come out until July.

Another one to add to the list is Midnight on Lundy by Victoria Eveleigh. Just one more to add probably a JPT or a CPT one.

My recommendation is 'Ponies at Westways' - Constance M White, when I read this I enjoyed it although it is a school story with pony action. I plan to read it again as part of the challenge along with 'Nutmeg comes to Westways' Will be interesting to see how they go on second reading.
Please let me know if this recommendation is not suitable because it is sort of a school story, maybe it could also fit into the category of 'non pony with pony'?

Having trouble logging in again, doesn't like my browser i think, but would like to take part again.
Are we having the 'adult' pony book that i'm sure we've included before? If so my recommendation would be Scratch by Sue Millard (Against the odds book 2, but set a good 20 years later) and I guess a thriller with horses maybe, or if you're not adverse to adult material Laurie Twizels 3 books are all great reads.
