Hi all our late winter read is With Vacant Possession by Gillian Baxter. It's an adult horse story. Please note this is only available as an e-book at the moment. It is available free on the Amazon Unlimited membership which you can normally get a free trail of if you have't already had one. Discussion to start in approx 10-14 days.

I read it right after the first of the year, but will likely re-read it for the discussion. I loved it!

Feel free to kick off the discussion Haffy or Rally. I'm a bit of a slow starter as had a lot going on the last couple of weeks.

Hi all sorry I haven't been around for a few days been travelling with poor internet. Anyhow I LOVED this book. A gentle but involving read. Liked everything about it from the heroine ( nice to see an older woman for a change) to the setting and if course the Welsh Cob angle - my all time fav ponies. The ghost element was very well done and blended in with the rest of the story very well. The relationship between our heroine and the ghost was touching, especially near the end of the book. I hope Gillian writes a sequel.

I read this today having bought it some weeks ago. I had put off reading it because I bought Love and horses at Bracken at 5he same time and didnโt find it very satisfying. So this was a pleasant surprise. It is much better written and I really enjoyed it. Not necessarily something I would go back to but a diverting read with good dialogue and characterisation.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the book Ginslinger. I must say I didn't really fancy the Bracken Stables continuation book myself after reading the blurb.
Forgot to add I also liked the in-hand showing angle, which isn't seen in that many pony books. I do find it interesting, having done a little bit of it in my youth and often watch it in the agricultural shows round where I live.
Anyone else have anything to add, as the thread seems to have gone a bit quiet and it will soon be time for our next book!

I started ages ago but then came down with a bad bout of flu and wasn't up to reading anything. But when I felt better picked it up again and read it off in a couple of days! I very much enjoyed the story which was a bit more unusual than the norm. I didn't even realise it was a ghost story before I read it! As someone said earlier, it was a refreshing change to have an older female character and it was also a relief to not have to put up with her having some boring romance which may have taken the story away from the horses. I voted very good.

Yes, I could hardly believe it was the same writer. This was really well done. The characters both equine and human werenโt too perfect. I quite like that it featured some older horses as well as an older heroine and there was some genuine dramatic ending. I also enjoy watching in hand showing especially M and M. As for tme marching on it will be time to think about the challenge before we know it.
