Hi all, I'm doing a new section on the website about which dog breeds are featured in pony books. If anyone has a few spare moments and can list some dogs by breed (and name if you can remember it) in books they've read I would be very grateful.
I've been musing upon doing this for a while but what gave me a push is the Daschund which appears in Summer on Wild Horse Island by Mary E. Patchett which I've recently read. I can't think of any other pony book where that breed appears!

I can start you off with DP-Ts A pony for sale. The Beaumont’s have an elderly black male lab called Random, The Lonsdales have Bloodhounds called Jasper and Justice and Lettie Has a wire haired terrier called Tatters.
In CP-T’s Aday to go hunting Antonia Selwyn Jones has a boxer puppy called Brutus and the named hounds are Thunder, Raiment, Rueful, Whynot, Wisdom and Warrior.

In Gay and the Ponies by Elinore Havers, Gay is a poodle. I'm sure there are tons more, but for some reason, they're not coming to me at the moment

Here's a selection at random that spring to mind - this is to put you in a good mood Claire as i had to do a quick substitution, and read Highland Trek instead of Mystery Trek, as the mystery trek book has seemingly gone on a mystery trek!
I had Two Ponies Books - lots of dogs Christina Irish Wolfhound Shamrock Augusta Cocker Spaniel Black Lucifer Charlie brown mongrel terrier Terry Eleanor Langford two Jack Russels Scut and Scurvy (Really!!) Nigel, Pug called Gruffy Pat and Heather Golden Cocker spaniels called Rupert and Rolly Piers Wire Haired Fox Terrier called Bandit
All Change, Black Labrador named Storm
Prince Among Ponies Scottie called Macgregor
Pony for sale, Guy Beaumont, Black Labrador called Random, Lydia Pike black and tan German Shepherd dog called Rudolph, Lettie Lonsdale had two bloodhounds
Cuckoo Mill Farm Books the family had a Red Setter Bitch calld Redskin and an Old English Sheepdog called Watch. and Gold had a lurcher puppy. (Valiant)
Pony for Jean books, Black cocker spaniels Shadow and Sally who then had litter of puppies called Spick,Span, Rough and Tumble
National Velvet Terrier type called Jacob and appallingly a black mongrel kept chained in the back yard and two spaniels also kept shut outside.
Quite a selection in Ride by Night too, Labrador called Miracle, Leslie has Peke called Ching Poo and a mongrel called Rascal.John has German Shepherd called Fearless, and Roddy has a West Highland Terrier called Cockade.
Plenty of Pones they have a Borzoi which is the mother's dog called Tanya, Sefton and Sailor Golden Cocker Spaniels and Extra who is a terrier type mongrel.
Gaze at the Moon Border Collie called Quest
Interesting, back in the day everyone had labradors or cocker spaniels according to the PT's and strangely they pretty much have now too, unless they've been crossing them and now have labradoodlycockerpoos or whatever the latest expensive designer mongrel is called!!

Thanks everyone for the doggy info, especially kunuma/cloud.
Coincidentally, I also can't find my copy of Mystery Trek, wracking my brains to think if I lent it to someone. I may have to change it on my list too!

Radney Riding Club Roger elderly Lab and Rufus golden cocker spaniel belonging to Mr Thornton and red bull terrier, Ruddy belonging to Henry and his sister, Elizabeth.
Also mentions the Ketterings’ golden cocker Simple Simon.
In the Chill Valley Hunt series, as well as the hounds there are the hunt terriers, Pick and Shovel. I think Pick was female and Shovel male, Laurence and Sandy have a black cocker called Quinky, The Hon. David and Lady Peterborough have West Highland terriers Hamish and Morag and collie Solomon. The hunt hires a welsh collie they call Nesta as a foster mother.
There are quite a lot of dogs in the West Barsets. I think the major has terriers called Grit and Grime and a lab. Dick has a cairn terrier called Clive or Clifford or similar but I will check and I have a feeling Mrs Radcliffe does have Dachshunds. And Noel’s Simple Simon does appear.
In Stolen ponies the O’Connors have a smooth coated terrier Nipper and 5he Richardson’s have dogs but seem always just to be referred to as the dogs.

Thanks everyone for the doggy info, especially kunuma/cloud. Coincidentally, I also can't find my copy of Mystery Trek, wracking my brains to think if I lent it to someone. I may have to change it on my list too! Well I would have been sure that it was me who had forgotten to return it, only I don't have it either!!!! Looking at Dark Champion I think it must be one of the oldest pony books - mine is dated 1948 - now that is before even I was born!! Very weird they get a Connemara pony and all through the book it gets called Connemara!! Did like the old illustrations though.
ooops that should have been in the other thread, so to make amends I'll throw in some more dogs! Getting myself back, (thanks Claire) has gone to my head.
Dogs In Ponies from Afar there is a Newfoundland dog called Nero, a black labrador called Dauncy Warrior who is obviously their stud dog and they have a brood bitch called Wanderer, (I think the PT's may have bred labradors in RL), A smooth fox terrier called Leerie (that name has been used for a pony somewhere too) and Norrie a border Collie

More dogs, (well it is my favourite subject!!) In the mega depressing Catastrophe at Black Pony Inn, the paying guests have a Dobermann called Ruffian and two Boxers called Ruby and Rascal.
In the Jill books it mentions Diana's Cairns but not individuals, and in Rosettes for Jill, the Cortman kids have a Corgi and a West Highland White called Gussie and Mo, I'm going to have to look up which was which. Gussie was the Corgi.

I remember a pony book with a dog called Porteus which I think was being looked after for someone and one with a dog called Finnegan who got his ear dyed yellow and there was a pony called Mourne. But no idea what they were called.

I think at the end you will have to do a sort of calculation as to which are the most popular breeds in pony books.
Here's some more, Horses at Home, Aunt Gay has a Springer Spaniel called Picaroon. In Friends Must Part the two girls both have Boxer bitches called Blondie and Sheba. Mr Hartley who sells them matching ponies has a yellow labrador. It's called a golden labrador in the chapter, but that is akin to calling a grey horse white!! Labs are never called golden!!
In Cammies Challenge there is a selection - I know the mastiff is called something like Dudley and Missy has several dogs, but I admit I'm going to have to dig the book out for further details!

This one deserves a post to itself because the books and programme are probably responsible for my two passions in life, palominos and German Shepherds! REBEL the GSD in CHAMPION THE WONDER HORSE.
