An ambitious list for me, we'll see how it goes!
1.) Racing Manhattan/Terrence Blacker - recommended - 2.) Wanted! A Horse!/Babbis Friis - book in translation (translated from Norwegian) - 3.) Empty Field/Christina Pullein-Thompson - book by author who has died since 2000 - 4.) Top Kick/Helen Orr Watson - war horse 5.) Five Proud Riders/Ann Stafford - holiday/trekking - 6.) Grounded/Sheena Wilkinson - modern - 7.) Thudding Hoofs/Blanche Chenery Perrin* - 8.) Days of Gold/Ann Spence Warner - 9.) A Time to Dance/Regina Woody - non–pony book - 10.) Phantom Trailer by Mildred Wirt - non–pony book -
*Putting this book on my challenge list finally motivated me to check something out that's been niggling at me since we did Secretariat as a movie group watch. Chenery just isn't that common a name, and Secretariat's owner was Penny Chenery. Turns out there is a connection....she is sister to Christopher Chenery who bred Secretariat, and the stud farm in her book Born to Race was based on his stud farm.

My choices are:-
Siani Shetland by Anwen Francis (translated book) Silver Eagle Carries On by Primrose Cumming (war book) We Rode to the sea by CPT (horsey holiday ) The Mystery Trek by Primrose Cumming (recommended book) A Rosette For Royal by Patricia Leitch (author who has died since the year 2000) A Red Rosette by Geoffrey Lapage
Also Claire I have noticed that the challenge start date is wrong. It says that it starts on 25th June 2017. Does that mean it's already started or did you mean it starts in 2018?

Hi All. I would love to join in again this year. The categories are great but I've had a terrible time narrowing down my options. I think I'm going to go with the following:
1 ) Midnight Rider - Krista Ruepp (translated) 2) Wild White Stallion - Rene Guillot (translated) 3) Six Ponies - JPT (author died since 2000) 4) Riding Course Summer - Patricia Leitch (author died since 2000) 5) Fair Girls and Grey Horses - 3 xPT’s biography (author died since 2000) 6) War Horse - Michael Morpurgo (war) 7) Jackie's Pony Camp Summer - Judith Berrisford (trekking/holiday) 8) Blackbirds Pony Trek - Jo Furminger (trekking/holiday) 9) Galloping across a Cornish Summer - Cate Bryant (2016-2018) 10) Prove Yourself a Hero - K M Peyton (recommended)
Most of these are new books to me (with the others having been 25 years plus since last read). Exciting. I'm currently reading Pony Patrol and the Mystery Horse.

Brumby - I'll be interested in what you think of The Intruders. I really like it, but not many people have read it as it was very rare for a long time, it's still rare but there have been a few copies floating around the internet in the last few months.
Louise - great that you're joining in again this year. Would you like to recommend a book ?

Thanks, Claire. I would recommend Eventer's Dream by Caroline Akrill. I'm currently reading Flying Changes and whilst it is ok, it isn't a patch on the eventer's trilogy. I have heard that Caroline is working on a 4th book in the series. Can't wait to find out what the Fanes have been up to..

I will add my list asap, going to have plenty of time as bust my wrist last Sunday, so not much else to do as can't use it all - hoping if I'm good i can avoid an op to pin it.

oh no, Haffy! I'm so sorry to hear you've broken a wrist....been there, done that Hope it's not as bad as feared, but I know how painful and incredibly awkward it is....you don't realize how much you depend on having two hands to do things until one is out of action. One reading tip: make sure you pick a couple of ebooks for the challenge, I found it got surprisingly old having to hold a book in one hand for long stretches of time (probably because that one hand was already doing double duty). Being able to switch it up a bit helped.

Oh dear sorry to hear that Haffy. Did you do it riding? My mum broke hers a few years back and found it extremely frustrating so I know how you'll be feeling!
Darkhorse, glad you are taking part this year. No hurry for lists, next few days is fine.

It's fun to explore these horse author connections! However, though in name Christopher Chenery was listed as Secretariat's breeder, as far as I know it was pretty much like in the movie -- it was definitely Penny (Christopher's daughter) who was running the farm after Christopher became incapacitated and hospitalized (stroke, wasn't it?? -- he was in the hospital the last 5 or so years of his life), and it was Penny who chose to breed Somethingroyal to Bold Ruler. And the whole coin toss thing in the Disney movie Secretariat is pretty much true, as far as I know. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Chenery. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Chenery So Blanche was Penny's aunt, then? Another resource if you are interested in the Chenerys and/or Meadow Farm: the book and website: www.secretariatsmeadow.com/. The Meadow is now The Meadow Event Park and is the site of the Virginia State Fair and other events. www.meadoweventpark.com/ In any event, the Meadow is a lovely inspiration for the farm in the Chenery Perrin books.

Thanks guys. So far so good, if it doesn't slip this week and looks good on xray again it should be fine so fingers crossed or it's back to square one. And yes riding accident, pony spooked by cows and we had a mishap with a wire fence she didn't see until last second so both fell as she tried but failed to get up and over in time, pony unscathed and it could have been far worse x

I seem to remember having picked it up, only to be put off by the small print, but have new glasses, so no longer an excuse So far so good! Enjoying it, wondered where it was going when she went off to finishing school in the beginning but it's turned into a career novel so far with just a hint of [unsuitable] romance, or so the parents would deem. Shows i didn't read the blurb as i expected more eventing going by wrapper, but only half way through ish so it may still be coming. I know we're not quite ready but when it's up and running can Black Loch get a huge smiley please, first read this in the 80's and have adored it ever since, the content, the setting, her style of writing, something about it just captures the imagination still. I'm a believer the water horse might just really be out there...hopefully a mystical but gentle creature like this one and not the flesh eating Capaill Uisce from the Scorpio Races.
