I'm not at all familiar with Fury; a bit before my time! Never saw the TV series or read a book. I would normally say it looks pedestrian and cheesy, but Susan's and everyone's recommendation certainly overrides that concern.
Had a look at my bookshelves and I've actually got 5 Fury books! (and read none of 'em yet!) The 3 by Albert Miller, one by Troy Nesbitt and one by William Fenton. The Troy Nesbitt one, The Mystery at Trapper's Hole, was actually passed on from my dad (not a horse story fan - it was a school prize). I vaguely remember the TV show. If anyone would like more info about the books/TV show see my web-page link below:
Finished it off. Quite a fun fairly light read, quite humourous at times. Aimed more at boys probably with a bit of adventure/danger/illegal logging plot thrown in. The Christmas bit was short and right at the end but it was very Christmassy with lots of snow, and goodwill to all men, and even a foal being born! The characters were good, especially the crusty old Pete who provides a lot of the humour in the book, especially when he locks horns with Aunt Maggie.
I liked the dog. Quite funny bit when Doc Beemis gives Joey his money back and says the dog has been driving him close to the loony bin. First time I've read it and it was much better than I thought it would be, and the fact that there was a lot of humour in and a couple of eccentric characters was a bonus.
I thought the dog was fun too....especially the bit with the bath, when they discover that his gray patches were actually white
Speaking of color, I was taken aback to see that Jim has light blonde hair....I realized that my mental picture of him comes from the Everett Raymond Kinstler illustrated version of the first book, (as adapted by Alice Thorne), in which he has dark hair.
Hopefully will finish it off tomorrow....I have to admit, I've blown a good bit of time over the last couple of days binge-watching the original Hawaii Five-O, trying to imagine myself in the tropics......it's a balmy -11c here right now, with a wind-chill of -19c....and that's as warm as it's getting for the next few days....bleh.
I don't think any edition of Fury and the White Mare had illustrations, the book I was referring to is a "picture book" adaptation of the first book, "Fury: Stallion of Broken Wheel Ranch" Here's a link to a copy on ebay:
Fury and the white mare just snuck in with a 'very good' I thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so that I have ordered 'Fury stallion of Broken Wheel Ranch'
Agree with everything written so far, loved Pete & Crosby, all around very pleasant read an the whole christmas thing was really well handled (not over the top!)
Hope you girls are saying warm, was 42c here the other day thankfully it has been cooler since, although heating up later this week, not looking forward to February as its usually the hottest month On the 42c day spent the whole day worrying about the chickens and had to keep traipsing up the back to put the hose on and water the ground so they could take a cool dustbath!
Hi Brumby, yeah you seem to be getting some awful temps over there. Wish I could send you some of our cold air!
I too found the book better than I thought it would be and luckily I have all the other books in the series. Even if I have read the last one first, which is normally a no-no for me. But I just didnt have time to read the others beforehand.
I enjoyed the book too. I thought it was a bit slow to start but after you got to know the characters it picked up. I didn't expect it to be so filled with quite funny bits, as those ranch type stories are normally quite serious. Really nasty villain which contrasted with the humour and the Christmas part was nice. It was a very good choice for a winter and Christmas read.

cally: I need to make $ to emigrate, buy a rural property in the Yorkshire Dales area, start an animal rescue sanctuary and a service to take animals in to see the elderly, sick, disabled etc.

cally: Oh I see how this works now- don't press the return button, eejit. How do I start to write a pony book having read hundreds, and not accidentally or intentionally accidentally 'borrow' ideas?
