Rally, I don't think Scarlet Royal has ever been mentioned....it is a nice book, kind of malt shoppe romance with horses, if I remember correctly (I have a copy, haven't read in a while). (btw, a lot of her books are available on kindle now, though not that one)
Boy gets job as a soda jerk (working the counter in a soda shoppe/ice cream shop), strikes up romance with girl at the counter. They break up, make up etc. Add music and it's a Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney pic. All very innocent and very 1940s/50s.
Oh, I knew there was a horse book called Star Dream == couldn't remember the author. Thanks, Susan -- Now I'll use it for
14. Star Dream by Janet Lambert and Dream of Fair Horses by Patricia Leitch.
I actually think Scarlet Royal is a titch better than might be implied by the phrase malt shop romance. I think Margo's family as a whole is facing a really dire situation -- losing their farm and home -- and so establishing the riding school is vitally important, not just a madcap adventure. And the romance elements come in kind of late -- the hero is there, but the focus is on the family's major change is life and economic circumstances. And on top of having to work hard, Margo is faced with losing her horse (she feels she has to take a generous offer because of the family's dire economic straits), and she grapples with indulging the almost paralyzing grief she feels versus trying to put it in perspective of all her family have going on in their lives. In short, I think it's at least somewhat nuanced in Margo's character arc, and that of her family.
But still Susan's categorization is quite apt. The book does make me think of the stronger works by Betty Cavanna, like her very good Wanted: A Girl for the Horses or the dog story Going on Sixteen (but some of Cavanna's stuff drags for me -- I guess no one's good all the time).

I agree re Cavanna's work, I enjoyed a lot of it, but it was hit or miss. Some of her mystery's were fun too (I'm a sucker for mysteries)...did you ever ready any of the Connie Blair Mysteries she wrote as Betsy Allen?
Re Scarlet Royal, sorry.....I didn't mean to imply that there wasn't more to the book than the romance aspect, just trying to explain the "forumula" for the UK folk who hadn't come across it before! Some books that do fit the description do rise well above the ordinary....Dorothy Gilman's books, Nancy Hartwell's too.
Some good answers there everyone. Rally I'll let you have the 4/four for sheer inventiveness! Its surprising how many answers are different from the ones I came up, there could be quite a few possibles for each clue so feel free to suggest any more for those which have already been answered. There is at least one another title with four at the end, as it's the one I originally came up with!
On a slight tangent - has anyone noticed how many of the composite titles make sense as one longer title? For example: I'D RATHER NOT GALLOP TO THE HILLS, A ROSETTE FOR ROYAL CRUSADER to name just a couple.

aud: Can anyone tell me if they know of a Pony book that has a story line with A nesting Pair of Osprey Birds(thats as well as Ponies)i have been told it is either Alisons Island Adventure by Sheila Stewart or one of the Jinney books by patricha Leitch.

tali: One of the Jinny books has a sub story line of egg stealing so may be the one you are thinking of. It is one of the books that features the character Claire Burnley.

ginslinger: It is one of the early Jinny books. I only read the first few and I found the storyline upsetting.
