The first I got was actually the last in the series, Olympic Horseman...pure unadulterated luck, I fell over it in a local bookstore. The first three were a long, hard slog to find, even in the US, though ultimately I didn't pay a fortune for any of them. They really are excellent, even the earlier "ranch" ones, which aren't normally on my hit parade.
Speaking of ranch/western books, 1 is C.W. Anderson...one of his few western covers!

Silver Brumby is Grace Huxtable. Do you know, until I joined the pumbles I had never thought about who illustrated the books, I just thought some were good, some bad and some ridiculous! Now I take more notice of them and take note who drew them. There is one famous illustrator who everyone likes but I dislike their horse drawings intensely - but love, love love the guy who did the jill books!

Oh you two made me realise I didnt add Caney to the competition. Well for a bonus point can anyone name a pony book illustrated by Caney that was NOT in the Jill series?!

Didn't he do one of J.M. Berrisford's books....Timber I think? (One I liked, but think I'm in the minority there!)

Number 10 I'm going to guess is WENDY MARCHANT?
Susan I'm with you on Timber. It's the only J M Berisford book I've kept!
Oh and I've just realised you had already answered no 1. Susan DOH!

Sorry Rosie no. 10 is not Wendy Marchant. Bonus point to Susan Yep Timber is illustrated by Caney. One other pony book he illustrated is a reprint edition of A. F. Tschiffely's The Tale of Two Horses. I've also noticed that Match Pair and Dark Horse by Patience Mcelwee look like they may have covers by Caney. Has anyone got them cos I would love to know if they are Caney or not?

7 is Leonard Shortall
Re Caney...I've got Dark Horse, will dig it out and have a check. Match Pair has eluded me so far....more scarce than hen's teeth!
Rosie...good to know I'm not alone in liking Timber! That and Ponies Next Door are probably my favorites....didn't care for the Jackies, and found Red Rocket deadly dull.

I got Dark Horse recently and it really does look like Caney's work but I'm pretty certain it wasn't credited to anyone. I may have missed it though... and yes same here with Match Pair! Haven't managed to get a copy of that one either.
O.K. another guess for 10 Rosemary Robertson?

Thanks for the info Rosie. I thought there was no-one credited. But I didn't have copies of the books to check. Are there internal illustrations too? BTW 10 is correct no prizes for working out the last one lol.

I guess 3 must be WENDY MARCHANT then No internal illustrations in Dark Horse but you do get a colour frontispiece of the cover illustration.

Thanks Rosie, I like colour frontispieces. While on the subject of Patience McElwee, has anyone got the Merrythoughts? And if they have how much horse content is there?
