Hi all here is the official thread for the challenge. For those who haven't taken part before our aim is to choose up to 10 books to read over the summer and try and finish all those we have chosen by the end of the challenge. We post on here to describe the various books we have read and whether we liked them or not. I also set up a special web page where we can see each other's progress and award smiley or frowny faces to the books and rosettes to the readers when they have read a certain number of titles. To give a little variety to the challenge there are a number of categories of book which its suggested you try and fulfil with your book list (see below). Also you can add any titles of your own choice, pony or non pony. If you dont have time your book list can be as short as you like. Or you can go for the big kahuna and try and finish all 10!
READING CHALLENGE CATEGORIES:
AN OLD CLASSIC PONY STORY A NEW PONY STORY (2013/2014) A PONY STORY BY AN AUTHOR YOU HAVEN'T READ BEFORE A STORY ABOUT ANY ANIMAL OTHER THAN AN EQUINE A NON PONY BOOK BY A PONY AUTHOR A BOOK SET IN A COUNTRY OTHER THAN YOUR OWN PLUS UP TO 4 OTHER BOOKS OF YOUR OWN CHOICE, PONY OR NON-PONY
As this is a pony books forum please could you try and choose at least 50% pony books if possible.
STARTING DATE: 10th JULY
FINISHING DATE Approx 10th SEPTEMBER (May be extended if needs be)
Please can everyone who wants to take part let me know and post their list of books by 10th July if poss.
Guests can also join in more informally - just pick your books and you can come on here anytime to discuss them with us.
HAVE FUN!

This is just an initial list, I have yet to decide what to read.
AN OLD CLASSIC PONY STORY - Sea Ponies by M M Oliver or Mona the Welsh Pony by Allen Seaby A NEW PONY STORY (2013/2014) - Joe and the Lightning Pony by Victoria Eveleigh A PONY STORY BY AN AUTHOR YOU HAVEN'T READ BEFORE - Ponies for Hire by Margaret MacPherson A STORY ABOUT ANY ANIMAL OTHER THAN AN EQUINE - Dear Pup: Letters to a Young Dog by DPT A NON PONY BOOK BY A PONY AUTHOR - Father Unknown by CPT A BOOK SET IN A COUNTRY OTHER THAN YOUR OWN - Horse in the House by William Corbin PLUS UP TO 4 OTHER BOOKS OF YOUR OWN CHOICE, PONY OR NON-PONY
Silver Eagle Carries On by Primrose Cumming They Died in The Spring - JPT or A Place with Two Faces (JPT under the name of Josephine Mann) A Pony for Jean - Joanna Cannan Dream Pony (either by Elinore Havers or Constance M White - I have both).
I am not sure if Dear Pup counts as Jane Badger has it listed as non fiction - but from what I briefly glanced at it I thought it was a fictional book, but the main character is real (it is a dog that DPT owned at the time). If I cant have it then I will substitute it for another dog book that the PTs wrote.

Ooo thanks Claire. Apart from Father Unknown, Sea Ponies, A Pony for Jean, A Place With Two Faces, I havent read any of them before. I suspect that I will enjoy the PT books. Even then, it's been a long time since I read A Pony for Jean. I have tried to include all 3 PT sisters in my list.

I was reading "Classic" to mean "vintage, not modern"....my entry for the category is from 1957....can we get a ruling Claire? I'd assume anything in the 60s and maybe 70s would qualify as vintage? (I suppose it depends on your age )

Yes Susan the classic pony book is just an older non-modern book, up to 70s is fine.
Apart from the category of an author you haven't read before (for obvious reasons) any of the books you choose can be re-reads.
I haven't got my list together yet. The animal story will probably be Ajax the Warrior by Mary Patchett as I just picked that up in a charity shop, but I am not sure if it counts as it looks to have some pony stuff in it. Anyone read it? Well it will be on the list in some capacity if not in that category.

I've got a copy of Ajax,...I'm not sure if I finished it though...I think I did. I remember it being ok, except for the snakes....I hate snakes I'm debating the "other animal" book.....I haven't got anything at the moment I'm very enthusiastic about, unfortunately.

Thanks for posting links, Claire....reminded me that I hadn't read the second of the Gordon's Undercover Cat books, which solved my dilemma!

Hi Guys , need to give this some proper thought before i compose a final list but initial thoughts
AN OLD CLASSIC PONY STORY - Silver Brumby (a reread but it's a long time since i read it)
A NEW PONY STORY (2013/2014) (Thinking of buying the new KM Peyton for this)
A PONY STORY BY AN AUTHOR YOU HAVEN'T READ BEFORE Come Show Jumping With Me by Veronica Heath
A STORY ABOUT ANY ANIMAL OTHER THAN AN EQUINE (I've got a couple of CPT's non pony ones i'm sure at least one is about a dog again needs a scan of shelves, i've also got boomer which i bought thinking it was a pony story but it's actually about a Kangaroo)
A NON PONY BOOK BY A PONY AUTHOR (thinking another reread with treasure To the East...then i'll forward it to you Claire. Or would the CPT cover two categories in one?
A BOOK SET IN A COUNTRY OTHER THAN YOUR OWN (another needing me to scan the shelves)
PLUS UP TO 4 OTHER BOOKS OF YOUR OWN CHOICE, PONY OR NON-PONY (more scanning shelves i'm afraid)

I will join in too but in a limited capacity. Probably 5 books will be my absolute limit due to time and also money! Has anyone got any suggestions for good new horsey books available for kindle that are either free or cheap?

darkhorse, were you looking specifically for books for the "new - 2013/2014" category, or just any books that are free/cheap for kindle? Jane Ayres has a few that came out last year that are cheap or even free to borrow, if you have a kindle and aren't just using the kindle app on another device: Horse in my Heart, Beware of the Horse. Caroline Akrill's Flying Changes isn't new, but it's another that is cheap/free to borrow for kindle owners. Most of K.M. Peyton's books are out now, some cheaper than others. There is one omnibus ebook that's a pretty good bargain, it contains Fly-by-Night by Peyton, Three to Ride by CPT and Summer of Horses by Carol Fenner (haven't read the Fenner book), all for £2.49 www.amazon.co.uk/Stories-Bind-Up-Summer-Reading-Collections-ebook/dp/B00ANOBM14/ref=sr_1_16?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1404183046&sr=1-16&keywords=k.m.+peytonLauren St. John's Dollar Horse trilogy are all out in ebook form in the UK (sadly not in the US). I'm sure there are more....will flip through my equine catagory on my kindle tomorrow!

My ten are as follows:-
1) CLASSIC - Riders from Afar (CPT) 2) NEW BOOK - A Horse Called Hero (S. Angus) 3) AUTHOR NEW TO ME - The Surprise Riding Club (E Havers) 4) Non-EQUINE ANIMAL - Chanco US Army Pigeon (H Orr-Watson) 5) Non-PONY by PONY AUTHOR - Robbers in the Night (CPT) 6) OVERSEAS - White Stallion of Lipizza (M Henry) 7) FANTASY - Runaway Summer of Davie Shaw (M Puzo) 8) ADULT - Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour (R S Surtees) 9)Top Kick US Army Horse (H Orr-Watson) 10) Stablemates - The Story of Dick and Daisy (M & H Johnson)
As you can see I have took some categories from earlier years and some suggested ones which amused me from the planning stage of this one as well as the official "compulsory figures". The Surtees book is my "mega challenge". Lurking in there is a book from my birth year also. No prizes for guessing, but it is obviously not 2 or 8!

I do enjoy seeing peoples lists....I always discover several new authors/books....you wouldn't think it possible after so many years of collecting

Mario Puzo wrote a pony book? The mind reels! Love to hear what you think of it! More about it here susan: mariopuzo.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/I've read it a while back (mini review on above web page). Bit weird but an OK read. Be interested to see what Tintin makes of it. Well done so far to all who have submitted lists/partial lists. You're making me feel very tardy and disorganized!

I have dug out half the books from the boxes underneath the bed, and I just have to find the other half. Namely the PTs/Joanna Cannan books and Dream Pony by Elinore Havers. I also found an empty box underneath the bed, so that means I can buy more books now, because I thought all the boxes were full. I suspect that the box wont stay empty for long though.

I have got the books into one pile. I have decided to go for Mona rather than Sea Ponies simply because I have read Sea Ponies before. I still can't decide which JPT book to read though. I have read A Place with Two Faces before but on the other hand I read Murder Strikes Pink last year and I fancy a change of characters because the same detective features in both They Died in the Spring and Murder Strikes Pink. So that kinda rules They Died in the Spring out.
I am also stuck on which Dream Pony to read. I have dug out both and read the blurb of both. But neither are appealing to me. Has anyone read both and can tell me what one they enjoyed the most? Or I could go for a completely different book entirely...but the question is what.
I don't suppose I will read all ten because I didn't finish all ten last year. I got a lot done last year simply because it was too hot and I couldn't sleep. The weather doesn't look as though it won't be as hot this year though.
