Hi all, this month's selection is Cargo of Horses by Monica Edwards. I have a spare copy of this I can loan out to anyone who needs one. Please post here or PM if you would like to borrow it. Unusually for the reading circle I have picked a book which is in the middle of a series. The author's series books work well as stand alone titles but if anyone would like a short precis of the characters and what has gone on in the series before this book I will be happy to supply it. Discussion will take place in approx 2 weeks time.

Yes please Claire. I was going to buy myself a copy but having seen the prices I don't think I can at the moment.

Thanks for the link Charlotte. It would be £15 by the time you add postage on which I just can't afford at the moment. Hopefully GGB will republished this one in the future.....

Unfortunately this one is not usually cheap. I'll send off the book to you Rosie - could you pass it on to anyone else who requests a copy?

Going to have to pass on this one (stop laughing, at least I'm owning it up front ). Really disappointing, because a) it's a book I haven't read yet, which is much more appealing to me right now than a re-read...the tbr pile reaching epic proportions and b) I actually have a copy. Sadly, it's the Collins Pony Library edition and my eyes are not up to the tiny, tiny print of this one (Black Hunting Whip is another....why were they too damn cheap to add a few more pages to accomodate the text!). I think the time may have come (gulp) for bi-focals. Hope to get that done in the next month or so, but it won't be enough time to join in.

Susan I've tried Varifocals and hated them, so now I take my glasses off to read and have the computer screen in front of my nose! I'll have to try again at some point but they really do take some getting use to. I envy people who can get on with them almost straight away.
I've not tried Bi-focals though.
Claire thanks, yes I'll pass it on to the next person.

I was hoping to get this one but like Susan, I already have so many I want to read, and this one is not very easy or cheap to obtain.
BTW I finally got Part 1 of Sweet Rock in a readable format, but Part 2 won't download for me at all. I'll comment on that thread but I'm okay with not having part 2 I think.

Glad it's not just me - I have appalling eye sight and with other eye issues too, I have to have varifocals now, and I can't get on with them at all - literally couldn't see to drive (couldn't see the other cars coming towards me!)with my last pair, and my current ones I can drive OK but can't see the TV or read - I take my glasses off to read, and sit two inches away from the screen! The worst thing is the laptop - it is getting harder and harder to read, and I more or less sit on the keyboard! I was thinking I was just a freak so I'm so relieved to hear there are others out there who struggle with varifocals! Re the middle copy of Cargo of Horses that Claire put up - who drew that!! Are they really putting THAT horse in THAT boat!!!!!!!!!!!!1

And there was me thinking I was the freak! I've tried three different sorts and all they do is make me feel physically sick and dizzy. I get fed up of being told it can take 3 months to adjust so just get on with it! Oh yeah right like that's gonna happen. How will I get to work? I can't drive like that and there are no buses.

ROFL..this is turning into the old fogey's thread You two are making me nervous about the bi-focals! May be a good thing though...knowing what you've gone through, I may ask about just going with two pairs of glasses, one for reading and one for everything else. It's what they used to do before they came up with bifocals/varifocals/etc....maybe going old school isn't a bad idea. It might be a pain carrying around two sets, but it has to beat nausea and blindness by a mile!

lol Susan and we'll get our bottoms smacked for going off topic You might be one of the lucky ones and get on O.K. with the bifocals. I know lot's of people who love varifocals and couldn't be without them now.

lol Susan and we'll get our bottoms smacked for going off topic Lol if no-one bothers to talk about the book itself at least we'll have had a fascinating discussion about people's goggles! Kunuma - yes the cover is a bit bizarre. I like the Mary Gernatt one on the Armada copy however that particular edition is heavily abridged apparently.

haha I've got the collins lib edition too and yes it's tiny. I picked it up to start the other night, the first page wasn't overly fascinating and i got distracted by celebrity juice...oops, will try again I promise.

The cover picture is fine IMO, but the paper quality and text size of the pony library edition are really cheap and nasty. It's also heavily abridged, according to John's page about cuts, lacks some of the illustrations. Hopefully will read the full version someday. For the moment, I've enough non-pony books anyway. www.monicaedwards.co.uk/abr-res.htm

According to John the Collins Pony Lib edition has the same revisions as the Armada pb. I still think its worth reading them if they're the only copies people have/can get as it wont spoil the story. I have been looking at the type of it today and it is horrible. I don't think its so much the smallness but the typeset and the thickness of the type. Makes my eyes go funny just looking at it.

Checked with John and the Fontana is not abridged, for anyone who has a different edition here is the status of all the editions:
Abridged/Revised:
Armada pb Collins Pony Library Goodchild hb edition
Original text:
1st edition (of course!) CBC edition Fontana paperback

Well I said 2 weeks time on OP which would make it around now but must confess I'm behind with everything and have only read a few chapters. If anyone other than Rosie has finished you are welcome to start and the rest of us will follow on otherwise we'll start in a few days time.

I'm having yet another epic fail. I did read the first chapter but it wasn't inspiring enough to pick it up again since i'm afraid. Is there Any better story of hers for me to try?

That's a shame haffy, it does get more horsey a few chapters in where they start rescuing the horses. Is it the "Seamen Speak" (for want of a better way of putting it!)that you can't get to grips with? It did put me off slightly when I read White Riders, which was the first Romney Marsh book I read. I think this is why I prefer the Punchbowl series as I'm not really into boats and all the landlubber stuff. Having said that when I re-read White Riders a second time I suddenly "got it" and do enjoy the Romney Marsh books now, if not so much as the Punchbowl ones.
Have you read The Wanderer?
