Thats a lot of dosh cally! I have spent between £800-£1000 on vets fees, medicines, dressings, etc for Rosie since the tumours started appearing, but before that she'd hardly been to the vet at all. My other cats I probably spent even less on, so overall I think I would have been worse off if I had insured them. My Eric is the only one out of the three that was insured when I had all 3. He's got half a dozen exclusions, one I can understand (anything FIV related) but some (teeth is one of them) I cant. My Pickle didnt cost me much, the main issue was going back and forth when he had a tail, but once it was amputated until the last month before his death he only went for the vaccinations. What he died of in reality insurance wouldnt have covered it so in reality it didnt make sense if he was covered. The final bill when I came to pick up his ashes was £201.35, but over £100 is probably the cost of the cremation (at least it cost me over £100 4 1/2 years ago). I didnt ask for a breakdown, though. If they were outdoors going then I would probably think twice about insurance, but indoors they are relatively safe. Tigger needs a dental at some point, but again insurance wont cover it so I will have to fork out the cost myself. I have a lot of money in my current account so even if it cost me £100 I would have more than enough money to cover it without getting myself into financial trouble. When I get my next cat I probably wont think about getting insurance, especially considering the fact that most insurers wont cover FIV positive cats so my choice is limited when compared to a non FIV cat with no pre existing conditions.

I'm willing to bet that IF Star was insured they wouldn't have paid out any costs because of the underlying problem of Cushings syndrome. Pet insurance really isn't worth it (neither is human health insurance in my opinion) unless you are a professional breeder, have really expensive performance horses, or run an 'animal' business like a livery yard. And I'm sorry if I'm mentioning a touchy subject, but, in Australia at least, cremation of your pet is a dodgy business. Please understand I am only relaying what a vet told me about one specific pet cremation business, where she said that they didn't do separate cremations, they did a few animals at the same time. I am sure there are decent places out there that do right by their clients but not all are reliable. As with pet insurance, or even vets, it pays to do a bit of research.

Forgot to mention Lizzie: yesterday her leg was very swollen and HOT which was a bit scary. I massaged her leg from the bottom to the top, hoping that would drain some of the fluid via the lymph glands. It's much better today but it is getting REALLY hard to keep her relaxed and still- she keeps jumping up and chasing her tail which is what got her into this mess in the 1st place! Another 7 days before her return visit to the vet.

Lizzie's zipping around like her usual self-taking her in to have the stitches out (hopefully) on Monday morning!

Hi, glad Lizzie is feeling well, hopefully the stitches will survive a couple more days!
Yes its similar with pet cremation here, there are 2 options, one is your pet is cremated separately and you get their ashes, the other is, as you say, they are done with other animals. Obviously the second option is a lot cheaper, but I can't see why anyone would choose that way just to save money.

There are horror stories about crematoriums ripping people off and not doing what they are asked to do, but I really hope that most of them do the individual ones correctly. In a perfect world I would be buried with my animals on my own acres, but the next best thing seems to be these green burial sites that are springing up - has anyone actually visited one? Very sad topic I hate talking about, but think it is good to do so.

Lizzie had her stitches out today! Still has to wear the collar for a few more days, then we are meant to keep her quiet for 6 WEEKS-ha!- and then in 8 weeks she needs another small operation to remove the pins and stuff. Really wanted the bucket to come off today- she bangs it into things, including me. Genuinely RAINING down here today- even the cats are inside and Tom is off school sick. Should use the time to do housework or clean my boots etc etc. Too lazy.

That's great news. How the heck do they expect us to keep them quiet tho - its not like you can hover over them 24 hours a day for weeks!

STUPID DOG. Finally took her collar off and within 5 minutes I was struggling to put it back on as she'd made the scar bleed. SO frustrating- it's not easy to get on and off either: the vet gets to do it when she's asleep, it took 3 of us to wrestle it off and on her again. grrrr....

STUPID HORSE. His hooves feel a bit too warm so it's panic time. NO more carrots, cut down the Livamol and Low GI Cubes, and start walking exercise with him. REFUSE to let Tom slack off school again- unless he's projectile vomiting or unconscious.

Gawd kids and animals - don't know how you cope with them all Callie!
Naughty Lizzie! Those collars are ridiculously hard to get on and off. I know I had a real job with the one with the vet gave me, one of the reasons why I ended up making my own.

BTW just moved this into the pets and animals section as I think it fits better there being about all our animals not just horses.

That's actually where I meant it to go but stuffed up! Tom is home again and I am sick too and on yukky anti biotics- some viral head cold thing. Head feels close to imploding, so no exercise for Star today.

Sorry to hear that Cally. They never give antibiotics out for cold or flus here, only bronchitis or pneumonia! I've been on antibiotics too for yet another tooth abcess and had a really bad reaction to them. Bloody abcess is still there as well so back to dentist again today. (Still can't believe you haven't been for nearly 30 years. I've been over 10 times this year alone!)

Oh yeah! My dental visit- I was expecting root canal, teeth pulling, but I need one TINY cavity filled and an old filling replaced sometime in the next year! bargain!!! Reaction to clavulenic acid (Augmentin Duo forte) went south- several bouts of vomiting and then the runs and felt off again this arvo. My face is bright red and my face and head so hot, my eyeballs feel like melting. At least I know which drug it is to avoid again. I have to have a/biotics- I probably have a sinus infection- because of my buggered immune system. The dentist asked me to ask my GP if I needed coverage to have my teeth cleaned because dental infections do affect the heart and in my case could cause real problems particularly as a pulmonary valve is not functioning properly. Don't fully understand it, I just do what they tell me to do! And I REALISE this should be in the flippin' doctors section but my animals health= my health issues quite a lot. Sinus' stuffed from going out to paddock on dark, rainy, windy nights!

Yes dental infections can be nasty and can spread to other parts of the body so you may have to visit the dentist a leetle bit more often in the future. I dunno I think its animals (and horses in particular) that have made so many of us physical wrecks!

Don't mention dentists!! I'm chickening out of having my tooth pulled.................I know...... I'm a big coward! It's just one of those years I think, two friends recently had car accidents - and I thought to myself, eeeek these things usually come in threes, well it's OK now, all my other friends can breathe a sigh of relief, I decided to have the third myself and get it over with!

Don't keep us in suspenders, Kunuma- I've got some annoying rev head neighbours up the road, I'll key their bogan mobile if that helps.

I am really glad that I took out pet insurance for my late cat Django. He was found to have a seriuos heart condition & had regular echo scans & ECGs as well as ongoing treatment. He was also in hospital for five days. When he died 18 months after the diagnosis the treatment all paid for (except cremation) by our insurers cost just under £4000. If he hadn't been insured he would have to have been PTS. I have insured my two new middle aged girls too. You never know what's around the corner & there is no NHS for pets.

Stupid dog still makes the scar bleed by gnashing and licking at it. This month Star needs his 6 monthly dental and general check up, both cats need vaccinating, then I have to have a filling myself Friday, get a chest x ray done and see the respiratory specialist and the rheumatologist last week of July. God, life's expensive! I wish one of my kids would become a vet!!!

Star was a bit down yesterday- it MIGHT have been because I gave him some 'bute as well as the pergolide (it's apple flavoured) and he walked off over the hill without taking a carrot off me. Phil went out and took him for a walk this evening and he perked up so maybe he's bored- he does (usually) light up when you ride him. I've got the vet coming out Tuesday week so I'll try different things to test him out before she comes.

Star seems a bit better, but the head mare is ill. I noticed last night something was off because she wouldn't stand still to be rugged and kept looking behind her and even tried to walk off a few times. I got my stethoscope out and could hear gut noises, but her muzzle felt a bit warm. And instead of her (Myst) leading the horses off into the mist for the night, she waited for Star to do it! So her owner is panicking about strangles, but I hope it's just a cold going around.

Oh dear, its nothing but worry with bloomin animals! I'm also worrying about one of the lumps that Rosie had that the vet didn't remove. Its growing at an alarming rate and already going pink and bald looking. Have a horrid feeling she'll need another op in a few months time.
