I only have 3 but I'm keen to read them again, especially after today when I got to be the 'penciller' for the dressage judge at tests held at the RDA today. I turned up thinking it was a kids riding day and there were all these gorgeous warmbloods and thoroughbreds backing out of floats- I was in heaven! I did really well tho' my hand is buggered from writing and I learnt HEAPS (not that I'm riding of late). I kept thinking of Henry & Noel etc and their dressage tests; 1 rider did 2 Novice tests at short notice (with a caller) and came 1st (she was semi-prof. and it showed!).

Claire,or anyone, if you have a spare 6 ponies I could swap one of the recent books I bagged called 'If wishes were horses' by Ivy Hunter. It's mid 80s, Australian, about a girl rescuing a clydesdale from a guy who plans to sell it for meat- very much like 'The Empty Field'.
It's a bit short on the horsiness quotient, but well written and I enjoyed it, but I'd much rather have a copy of 6 ponies, so if anyone wants to do a swap...?
It's hardback with a typically naff 80s cover and I'm happy to swap for any version as long as it has some sort of cover attached!

Sounds good to me, I have re-read the West Barsetshire ones recently as I have been buying 1st ed's. Just got radney Riding Club left to read as I am not so keen on that one.
The woodbury ones are my childhood (and still if I'm honest) faves so look forward to reading those.

I haven't read, or even SEEN the Woodbury series so I am extremely jealous, as well as broke, a bad combination when your hobby/obsession means buying from O.S. Then again, b'day & xmas coming up....

Cally I am sure I have spare copies of at least one of the woodbury series and possibly 6 ponies. Will have a root around. I would love to swap for 'If wishes were horses' as I like australian books. Will get back to you when I have checked!
I am in a similar position to you cos I have read most of the easy to get/cheap pony books and am now onto the australian/usa ones and the rare expensive ones!

exmoorfan...I'd love the Pony Club trilogy hardcover if nobody else has requested it....I'd definitely want to send you a nice hardcover in return though...hopefully I've got something you'd like!
Claire...for Six Ponies, is there a start date for the discussion? Wondering how soon I need to drop other books and start my re-read!

Thanks guys- I would love to get my hands on the Woodbury series as well as 6 ponies so if anyone has any requests for Aussie books, let me know and I'll have a look around.
Not that keen on them myself- it's always the 'other' that's exotic- I haven't read Silver Brumby since Junior school 30+ years ago... maybe I should give it a go again?

Re starting the first book I think we will give it a few days for most people to get hands on a copy then if theres anyone left we can pass on spare copies. I will post the thread in a few days. Anyone who wants to join in and hasnt got a copy of 6 ponies or arranged to borrow one post here and we will try and sort something out for you. At a pinch I have a scan of the first edition text which I can send to anyone on disc for them to print out. While we are on the subject of book swaps I am thinking of setting up a new category for them to take over from the old threads which were a bit hard to follow. I will try and organise the new ones a bit better

Hi all, well we have had a longish break from the reading circle. Was wondering if anyone wants to pick it up again now. We finished the Noel and Henry series and the original plan was to go on to the Woodbury Pony Club series by JPT. What do you folks think? Or do you want to try a different author now?

I'd be game to do another reading circle read, but not really up for any Pullein-Thompsons....I like them as well as the next person, but nine of the thirteen reading circle books have been their books....grin....I do like a little variety now and then!!
Maybe do an author who pops up on multiple people's top ten author list? Peyton has been done in reading circle before (Fly-by-Night, The Team), as has Leitch (Jump to the Top), but maybe Elywn Mitchell, Monica Edwards or Caroline Akrill?
If we did Mitchell or Edwards it would give me incentive to read one of their books that lurk in my tbr pile. ;D

Yep I agree susan we have maybe gone a bit heavy on the PTs! (Sorry haffy I know you like the Woodbury series)
Monica Edwards or Elyne Mitchell sounds interesting altho I cant find any of my Silver B books at the mo. Gillian Baxter, Monica Dickens and Elinore Havers have also appeared on the top 10s. Or maybe we could do an American author for a change. Its trying to find books everyone has a copy of!
Anyone else has any ideas let me know.

I have all of Gillian Baxter's books, and several of Elinore Havers, so they'd be ok for me too. I only have Cobbler's Dream by Dickens, which is lovely, but I'm so not up for a weepy at the moment...don't let that stop anyone else though....I can always join in the next group!
Oddly enough though, I have her (Dickens') Joy and Josephine, a non-pony book, in my tbr pile....I'm told it's best read in autumn, so a few more weeks....
I certainly wouldn't object to an American author, but virtually none of the authors on my top 10 list would be easily available in the UK or Australia...some are even hard to find in the US! The only one I can think of is the "one hit wonder" Florence Hightower's Dark Horse of Woodfield, which is easier to find in the UK than the US...I know you've already read that one though!
And there's always my beloved Vian Smith......I won't stop recommending him till I get every British pony book lover to read one of the best, and most overlooked, British authors!! ;D ;D ;D
For kicks, I went onto the abe site to check availability...The Lord Mayor's Show, which I though was one of Smith's best, came out in a hardcover reprint in the UK in 1980, with really nice cover art (much better than the original 1968 edition)...copies start at £1.50

Unfortunately my pony book collection is only small at the moment...it is growing slowly though So I don't have any of the books mentioned so far....apart from Cobbler's Dream (sorry susanb!) I'm happy to sit back and read the discussions until I catch up a bit.

I wouldnt mind doing Cobblers Dream tho that would leave susan out. But if we chose another book you don't have rosie I am sure someone else could lend you a copy. Thats what we usually do.

I don't mind if Cobblers Dream isn't chosen. I didn't realise people lent each other books
