I voted for Crab as well.....loved it!
Are nominations for the reading circle title still open? I've been thinking I'd most like to give Pattern of Roses a re-read, talking about it (and having ordered the DVD) has made me want to revisit again! (It's been a few years). Not a pony book per se, but still a K.M. Peyton, and a bit off the beaten track. Just a thought.......

Well a few people had asked for Blind Beauty as the reading circle book but I can leave it open for a couple more days in case there are any others suggested. I would say we could do whichever book is top in the poll but we've already done Fly by Night & The Team!
Pattern of Roses is an interesting book and I read it not long ago so wouldn't mind discussing it, altho as you say susan its non-pony. Maybe we could do both a pony and non-pony one like we did last Christmas. People could join in on either or both depending on how much spare time they had.
So just let me know what you think on the matter folks.

Both books sounds a good idea.

Hi all set up reading group threads for both books which can be accessed here: Blind BeautyA Pattern of RosesAs I said earlier, you can join in with either or both depending on time constraints etc. Could be a good chance to compare her pony and non-pony writing.

Have added KMP's dedicated author of the month page which links to all the various activities which are going on around it. Hopefully I will get a bit more organised as I go on with these so I can have the web page set up straight away. Also I think I will put the quizzes on a web page so that non-forum members can also have a go at them. Anyway the page is here: authorofmonth.ponymadbooklovers.co.ukWhile I am here does anyone have any suggestions about which KMP book I should review. We've already had either reviews or reading circles for Swallow series, Fly, The Team, Free Rein and of course we are doing Blind Beauty and Pattern of Roses at the minute. Perhaps I should do one of her younger readers books or maybe a Kathleen Herald title?

I'd agree re Kathleen Herald....I'm lucky enough to own the three books, but for those who don't, a review can help resolve the "should I keep trying to track this down, or is it not worth the bother" dilemma. (Someone should really reprint them, especially Crab, the most scarce.)

Have you reviewed small and greater gains?

Blub....trying not to think about Crab the Roan as I seem to have lost my scan of it (I sold the book itself for a lot of money) Hoping it will be on an old backup disc somewhere. I'm tempted to do Small Gains as I really like it but I think I may go for one of the Kathleen Herald titles (tho sadly not Crab sob!)
Fidra take not - reprint Crab please!!!

I don't think you can count on Fidra for much any more....it's years since they've done anything new, they don't even keep up their own newsletter (last was 2009).
It would be nice if Peyton could find another publisher (Girls Gone Bye?) or at least do ebooks of her out of print work. Something is always better than nothing.

I think Fidra got a bit tied up with their bricks 'n' mortar bookshop in Edinburgh and the publishing and web stuff got put on a back burner, but maybe they will get back to publishing now they have sold the shop. GGB hmm I have a sort of 'contact of a contact' there may pass a hint along. They are less horse orientated tho so its probably doubtful. Could try contacting KMP thru one of her publishers and putting in a plea for it to be re-published but I think its too old fashioned for any of the popular publishers to take on and god forbid it should be modernised and updated!

Think positive...."they HAVE BEEN less horse oriented"....nothing to say they couldn't expand!!!
To someone like me in the US, it's kind of a shocker that a Carnagie winner (Edge of the Cloud, the second Flambards book) would ever have books out of print. The Newbery is our major childrens book award, and the winner's books (not just the one that wins) virtually never go out of print.

Ooh am one happy bunny! Found my scan of Crab the Roan. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions. First it disappears, then I go thru my back up discs and find a copy of it. Open it and all the files are corrupted!!! But then after looking thru loads of discs that I'd done the same year as that one, I finally find a back up which works! What a relief! I thought I was going to have to hunt down the person who had offered to sell me a copy a few months ago (at a fairly high price) and see if they still had it. May do this one as my review now.

Haven't quite decided whether to review The Mandrake or Crab. I do want to read Crab again but maybe I will leave it til I can get the pages printed out and bound.
Just wondering if anyone has read any of KMP's other non-pony books which are not related to the characters of Ruth and Jonathan. I have a copy of Froggett's Revenge which is a humourous slightly fantastical dog story for younger children. I also recently was given Blue Skies and Gunfire which is a young adult romance set in the second world war and goes back to the theme of aeroplanes first seen in Flambards/Edge of the Cloud. I've also read Snowfall which was another YA historical one and was pretty good. Be interested to hear what other KMP books anyone else has read.

I've read A Midsummer Night's Death. I know I enjoyed it but as usual I can't for the life of me remember anything about it!

I have read Snowfall and think it isas good as her earlier books. Prove Yourself a Hero is great, and there are some horsey bits after Jonathan starts helping out at McNair's.

Midsummer Night's Death is another Jonathan one. Its where he's at school and there's a dead body found. Crikey he certainly led an exciting life. Riding in the Grand national was actually one of the less eventful things that happened to him!!! ;D

I've read her four Sea Scout books, which I believe she wrote with her husband Michael (the "M" from "K.M"), Stormcock Meets Trouble was my favorite of the lot, but they are fairly standard boy-adventure books. Blue Skies and Gunfire is in my tbr pile too

Well I eventually decided to review a younger reader's pony book instead of one of the Kathleen Herald ones, partly because there is a distinct lack of reviews of the younger readers books, but to be honest mainly because of lack of time and they are short! I picked Pony in the Dark because as well as being for younger readers it also has a male protagonist, which is fairly rare in pony books aimed at the younger set. If anyone wants to read the review you can do so here
