I don't know if everyone has read this but since not everyone has Facebook I thought I would mention it here. Basically Dream of Fair Horses and The Black Loch by Patricia Leitch are coming out as ebooks in March with hopefully print copies to follow. The person behind the publishing (it's a new publisher) hopes to bring back more pony book classics as ebooks in the future.

Thanks for that news Garej. It's good that the old classic pony books are slowly appearing as e-books so that younger generations will read them too. Hope they're not too mangled by updating tho!

Yes, as I mentioned on the In Vacant Possession thread, I bought it at the same time and read it first which put me off starting WVP! I suppose if you were a huge devotee of the Bracken Series (I think I only read the first two) you might want to know what happened to the characters but without that investment in the characters I found it a bit flat and bland. I don’t think it survived being moved to a modern setting well. The domineering aunt and uncle just seemed ludicrous. I can’t see many modern youngsters taking that level of interfernce and I don’t think it is taken for granted these days that all married couples will want children. Surely uncommon now not to discuss beforehand and take necessary steps. Worse is that the drama isn’t very dramatic - either very clearly flagged and quickly resolved or there isn’t enough at stake. A more has an inconvenient foal but it is a wonder foal and a horse to ride in the meantime is easily and cheaply found. They might get a compulsory purchase order but they will get shedloads of cash..etc It is a far cry even from say CPT’s Goodbye to Hounds where the threatened farm sale means the Day family will lose their home and livelihoods and may well be separated as well as the hunt. It took for granted that you knew and liked the characters and so there wasn’t much characterisation to make you care and most of the writing was very simple though there was the occasional long sequence of subordinate clauses that didn’t always go where they were intended. It also needed a bit of proof reading. On the whole it read like one of those books to encourage adult literacy and I was disappointed and found With Vacant Possession a very pleasant contrast.

Thanks for the comments Ginslinger. It did have 5 star reviews on Amazon but they aren't always reliable. I found the fact the characters were miraculously transported 50 years into the present very off-putting to reading this. Also even as a teen and far more starry eyed and romantic than the cynical old bag I am now, I found the romance between Bobby and Guy rather unappealing and unconvincing. Probably not one I'll bother with. Oh and thanks for the info about Dream of Fair Horses Garej.

Several new ebooks have joined the lineup that already includes Horse from Black Loch and Dream of Fair Horses, they're available in the US as well as the UK:
Darius the Eventer (formerly Gay Darius) by Hazel M. Peel Three Ponies and Shannon by Diana Pullein-Thompson A Pony to School by Diana Pullein-Thompson Caroline Canters Home by Caroline Akrill I'd Rather Not Gallop by Caroline Akrill If I Could Ride by Caroline Akrill

Thanks for the info. I have mixed feelings about this: as a reader and book collector, it's a good thing - but with my bookselling hat on I'm slightly concerned it will lower the value of the Caroline Akrill books. Not going to lose any sleep over it though!

I can't believe an ebook would tank the value of a hard copy....collectors like to have the real deal, and it's collectors who would be paying the higher prices in the first place. I have all these titles as physical books, but I still like to splurge on an ebook copy, just so it's in my bag when I'm in the mood (tales of a commuter )

Dream of Fair Horses has been republished as a physical book now if you're like me and prefer a physical book.

There's a sequel to the Love and Horses at Bracken by Gillian Baxter. Atm it's only available as a ebook but may come out as a physical book later. It's called Horses and Challenges at Bracken.

Thanks Garej, you beat me to it, just had a notification on our Facebook page from the author about this book and came on here to post about it. As the first one came out in paperback hopefully this one will too.

tintin's choice of a Dick Francis book reminded me to post here....of interest to US members, the earlier Dick Francis books are FINALLY coming out as ebooks. A slew are out now, with more coming July 1st.
Dead Cert was published in the US originally by Holt, and from Nerve to Whip Hand by Harper. All the books after Harper were published by Putnam. I think the ebook rights have been tied up for years on the earlier books, but that appears to be resolved now.

Bit late but yes i read the new Gillian Baxter and actually quite enjoyed it, the originals having not done much for me.
I love the fact that some of these lovely old books are being opened up to a whole new generation of readers, who quite probably wouldn't be interested in reading an old book otherwise. Hopefully it will actually inspire some new collectors to hunt out other non re-released titles or to buy a print version. I hope Prince Among ponies is on the list!

Now I did enjoy the originals, especially The Perfect Horse when she's at Badminton. I'm slightly worried about trying the sequels in case I don't enjoy them as much and also they have been moved into the present day rather than being set back in the 1960s. I suppose its a marketing decision to attract new young readers but I would have rather they had stayed in the past.

I bought Darius the Eventer as soom as I saw it was out as an ebook. I kept thinking vaguely that there was something called 'Gay Darius', as it's a bit of a relief to know it's had a title change. The new title fits the style of most of the other Leysham Stud books: *horse*, the *equestrian discipline*. And of course, the generally understood meaning of 'gay' has changed since it was first published, so the original title is not really suitable any more.
I've decided to re-read Dido and Rogue first though, as I've only read it once, so I'll catch up with the series again before starting on Darius.

It's been a while since I've seen a new book come out, but Jessie Haas has one debuting on Tuesday, October 13 in both US and UK, called The Hungry Place, available in both hardcover and ebook editions

A couple of new books to post about: Jessie Haas has a new book out, The Hungry Place (well, new late last year, I meant to post about it, but forgot )
Haven't read either, but they're in my tbr pile....I'll finally have a ready book for the "new" category in the summer reading challenge!
Also, an update on the first book I posted about on this thread: Ghetto Cowboy by G. Neri. It's coming out as a movie on Netflix, retitled Concrete Cowboy, and staring Idris Elba.

a group watch would be interesting, but it's a Netflix exclusive, as far as I know, so it would be limited to those who have that streaming service

Well we can ask the question - if anyone has Netflix and fancies a 'group watch' please let me know and I will set it up if there is a few of us. If not, maybe you and I can compare notes Susan!

G. Neri did a sequel to Ghetto Cowboy, called Polo Cowboy, I picked up a copy, but haven't yet read. The hardcover is insanely expensive in the UK

Thanks for that - there are a couple of cheaper used hardbacks, paperback not too bad a price. May be worth checking out abebooks too as sometimes they are cheaper. Interesting - was just reading there that a film has been made of the book. Have you heard anything about it Susan?

Yes, Ghetto Cowboy was made into Concrete Cowboy by Netflix, starring Idris Elba
I haven't seen it yet, I don't have Neflix at the moment (I go on and off), one of these days I hate that Netflix doesn't sell it's movies on DVD
