This is a nicely presented book about Princess Anne’s life with horses and as such covers a fairly wide variety of equestrian disciplines.
It is exactly what it says on the tin so do not expect anything at all, even obliquely, about other aspects of her life, although you do get the impression that her and the Prince of Wales are quite different personalities.
The writing style is competent and workmanlike and there are some very nice pictures. The Princess worked with Ivor Herbert who interviewed her about her reminiscenses. She then put the transcripts into her own words and they were sorted into a logical order.
I have to say I am a big fan of the Princess Royal, but the book is not very exciting. It is not a book for anyone who has read very many horsey books. It paints a no nonsense picture of the world of eventing.
There are some interesting incidents in the book, but it never really came alive that much for me.
Obviously a Royal personage has to be very careful what they say.
My father read the book as well. He is quite interested in horse racing, which leaves me cold, and he remarked, with some amusement, that she praised National Hunt jockeys very highly as a group, but had very little to say about owners, trainers and punters…

Thanks for the review tintin, you must be feeling full of energy! I think I may have this book lying around somewhere. I have quite a few of these older non-fic books which came with job lots and have been put to one side and never read. I'll try and find it and give it a rating too.
Like your dad, I do like horse racing, in fact racing books form the bulk of my non-fic equine reading.
