Well i almost put it back down in disgust after reading the first page or so but gradually it warmed on me and didn't turn out too badly in the end. It definatly improves as you read on. It starts by the main protagonist introducing herself, family, her life etc...which just had me screaming no, no no. It certainly wasn't subtle, wham you had her biography just like that no gentle inclusions along the way here. I was also thrown by the way it switched at times between telling in the first to a narrator and then back again, sometimes within the same paragraph. It's not a startling read and was never going to win any literary prizes but all in all it's a nice enough traditional pony story with a few cliches thrown in for good measure. In a nutshell there is no local pony club so the children decide to set up their own, the local 'snobs' join and then disdainfully resign their membership [naturally], they have a few minor adventures as a club before the 'surprise' (in the title/name of the club and was in jeopardy only hours previously) is interupted by a mercy dash to save an injured horse followed by a very happy resolution to all the issues we started out with. A comfort read type of book, perfect for me this week, as had flu and would not have been able to read anything that took any form of brain power to do so.

Haha know the feeling but I can't even use flu as an excuse nowadays ;D Hope you are feeling better haffy. I agree with the review. It is a traditional, comfort read as all Elinore Havers are. Its not her finest hour but not her worst either and at least it is one of the more original of the 'riding club' themed offerings. I like the fact that different people get to become the club leader making it quite a democratic club rather than some bossy type lording it over everyone and the surprise bit is quite interesting, even if the surprises are not earth shattering!

I think Elinore Havers is a little under-rated as an author. OK she will never be in the top league but she is much better than a lot of more well-known authors and the books are certainly better than much of the modern rubbish. They are all very easy to read, mainly traditional, and the characters are all likeable enough. And she did write 2 really good books which definitely equal those of the PTs and the like - Dream Pony and Only One Pony, both of which I would class as very good and were two of my favourite reads as a child. (We did Dream Pony as a reading circle book a while book and it had favourable comments)

I haven't read either of those so thanks for the tip. I agree with you about this book being better than some of the other modern rubbish out there
