Hi all, has anyone seen the film The Silver Brumby (think its also know as The Silver Stallion) with Russell Crowe? I am thinking about putting the DVD on my Christmas list but thought I would check it out first to make sure its not a stinker (like the awful cartoon series!)

No but now very very excited as Russell Crowe and horses in same film will not be able to cope. Its bad enough haveing to wait every Saturday to watch Richard Armitige (Guy of Gisbourne) in Robin Hood

Russell Crowe and horses in same film will not be able to cope. I know what you mean seahorse. Saw Hugh Jackman in a film lately (think it was Kate and Leopold) in tight breeches and boots galloping about on a grey horse and still get palpitations thinking about it.

Try 'Hidalgo' with Viggo Mortensen (LOTR) For a good horse cartoon (I know, doesn't sound possible, but it is) try 'Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron' - and there is a real life sad story about the horse who starred in it, well the one they used as a model, not the drawing!!!

There is a brilliant horsy film about a canadian dressage horse called Torka. I don't know title as it's one I videoed of tv years and years ago and missed opening titles but it's worth a watch if you can find it.

Just watched the Silver Brumby film at last.
I though it was quite good but it probably would not keep the interest of someone who wasn't mad on horses and can sit for hours just watching them galloping about! The story follows the basic plot of the book although most of the horse characters are missing, there are only the main ones such as The Brolga, Golden and Yarrowman. The bits with the horses are interspersed with that of the author Elyne Mitchell (played by Caroline Goodall) telling the story of Thowra to her daughter and teaching her about animals and the bush. The horses don't talk to each other as in the book. Also the part of the man who hunts Thowra is more prominent than in the book.
Altho not a patch on the books it does capture their spirit. (Elyne herself was a consultant on the film) Best bits are the wild horse sequences (some beautiful horses) and a young Russell Crowe. (don't get too excited seahorse ;D) Worth a watch tho my fav horse film is still Pharlap!
I would have liked to have seen the 2 disc special ed which apparantly had an interview with Elyne. If anyone is considering buying it may be worth getting this edition for the interview.
Anyone who wants to watch it email or PM me.

Russell is pretty young in this, think it must have been before he got famous. Not as fit as in say Gladiator, but a lot better than his chubby period. I certainly wouldnt say no Let me know if you want a copy of the film I'll send one.

Dragging up old thread in effort to be tidy and not just start a new one!! Claire please can I have a copy of the Silver Brumby film? Does anyone know if the palomino horse on the front of the newer prints of the Silver Brumby books is the one from the film. Is it a genuine brumby?

The pally on the books is the one used in the film. She is a quarterhorse and actually plays Bel Bel as well as Thowra. The two disc set has an interview with the trainer. By the way,I know a comment from years back, but very non horsy friend was visiting and watched the movie which I happened to have on,. She was absolutely spell bound and burst into tears t an appropriate moment. Also totally anit church but watched "Amazing Grace" with me and was very moved. I am not sure if that says something about her or the movies... I loved Phar Lap, Hidalgo, Sea Biscuit. I remember Torka, it was good. One of my all time heart wrenching horse movies is "Hearts Can Not be Broken." Cheers Vera

Ps The film about Torka is called "Dark Horse". I think there have been a few of that title; I remember one with Ed Begley Jr. which was very similar to the horse whisperer in the way the story and characters developed. Nothing like the Torka film though!. and it's Wild Hearts Can not be Broken!
