High Honours by Pamela Macgregor-Morris…Spoiler Alert!
This is a Horses Point of View story told by “Bottom Draw” a well-bred mare born in Ireland. After an idyllic start in life, she is bought by the British Army and shipped to a remount depot in Melton Mowbray. Her one ambition in life is to be an officer’s charger but after being drafted to Weedon, the “Authorative Centre of British Horsemanship”, she catches the eye of Major Davidson who realises she has the potential to become a top-notch show jumper. He becomes her new “Master” and her ambition changes; she yearns to be a famous show jumper and win at Olympia.
The pair are entered for local shows and after many successes Bottom Drawer realises her dream and competes at Olympia. But even better, she becomes part of the British Team and jumps at the famous National Horse Show in America, then at shows in Canada, France and Rome.
In 1939, Major Davidson goes off to war and Bottom Drawer, who is by now too old for Army life, is sold at auction. A tall, slim lady buys her and she’s turned out to grass with a very fat old pony called Dumpling. Her new mistress takes her for gentle hacks but with encouragement from her children she tries her out at local shows. Bottom Draw hasn’t forgotten her jumping skills and wins enough money to qualify for BSJA National Championships at the White City.
Major Davidson returns home from a Prisoner of War camp to discover his wife has bought his old horse for him. He is unable to ride Bottom Drawer at the White City due to a gammy leg so his wife rides her and wins the championship. They decide to retire her from show jumping and they put her in foal. The story ends with Bottom Drawer showing off her new colt foal who she hopes will be a successful show jumper.
I really enjoyed this book
