I know this thread is old, but having re-read this book recently, I can't help resurrecting it. The character of Grimalkin the cat, I think Ms. Henry added him as a point of interest in the story based on this painting of the Godolphin Arabian by George Stubbs: As for Agba, it was known that the horse has a caretaker who came from his native country, based on this painting: I remember reading somewhere that the name "Agba" was a generic term, meaning "slave boy" or "horse boy" unfortunately I can't find a reference for that at the moment!

Thanks for the pics. Actually I think proboards is about to change things so we can post images on here directly. I'll let people know when it happens.

I loved this book as a young reader- my school library had a hardback copy with the wonderful colour illustrations. I remember liking the fact that Sham doesn't win on the racetrack himself at the end (which would have been rather unrealistic given his age and condition), but that he lives on through his sons. I got really interested in racehorse pedigrees at age 13 (still am) and this book was a trigger for that passion.
The only other M Henry book I read was Brighty of the Grand Canyon, which was ok, but not a favourite. I'll have to check out the Misty ones.

King of the Wind was my favorite of the Henry books too, foxglove! You might also like Justin Morgan, which is about the founding stallion of the Morgan horse.
